TLX SH AWD Tech 3.5L

  • Automatic transmission

The transmission is the worst. It appears that it’s the case only in the first year of the newer model with the 9 speed. This takes away from the performance of the car.

My 2015 Acura TLX has been jerking when it is being accelerated or decelerated. This was an issue just a few months after I leased it and a defect code has been created for this issue as well as a software update, but it is far from a solution. The car worsens with time and shows many other transmission related problems.

This is the second time that the car is taken in to the service department to try and repair the jerking of the my 2015 Acura TLX when it accelerates and decelerates. Once again a software update is performed, but this does not fix the problem and the car continues to worsen and show more symptoms. It was in the service department for six days. The worst symptom of all is feeling like the car was rear ended. It is so bad that my lower back hurts as if I had just had an accident.

For a third time I had to take my 2015 Acura TLX to the repair shop for another attempt at repairing the jerking of the transmission while accelerating, decelerating and coming to a stop. Again a software update was performed, and this did not fix the problem. They say nothing is wrong with the vehicle, but it was kept for eleven days at the shop. For some reason they testify that they can not duplicate the symptoms of the vehicle, but they have created a defect code, performed multiple software updates and keep my car for almost two weeks.

Still feeling jerking between gears and when coming to a stop. Took in my 2015 Acura TLX to once again be checked for all the transmission symptoms that it has been presenting that make my driving experience awful and was given a tech line reference number this time with a defect code. The problem was not duplicated by the technician and nothing was done to repair the vehicle. No solution has been provided and I was told changing my car would not solve the problem because they all drive the same. Unbelievable!

I have complained and begged Norris Acura to repair my car's transmission to the point that the manager has stated that he refuses to write another repair ticket for my car. Norris Acura has not repaired my cars transmission because they don't know how. The car hesitates at a stop which makes it very unreliable and dangerous. I have learned how to allow more than enough time for the car to respond since it always hesitates before it moves forward. The transmission jerks so badly that it throws your head back into the headrest while going downhill from a start. The car also lunges forward when coming to a complete stop so you must allow more than enough space between you and the car in front of you so to avoid an accident. Cold weather seems to exacerbate these problems.

I noticed the problem of transmission slipping/jerking the first time I backed car out of driveway and put it in drive. There was a definite time lag going into drive and then a clunk sound. This seems to be worse during colder weather, but so far it hasn't shifted like any other car I have ever owned until it warms up and then it gets better, but still not right. I spoke to sales rep who stated wait until car has 600 miles to break in. I brought vehicle in on an unrelated matter and tech told me he has never heard of this problem or of a software upgrade to resolve this problem as stated by another customer. I will eventually bring vehicle in and dealer can keep it until resolved. I will keep this updated.

Update from Mar 18, 2015: March....Took vehicle into dealer who updated transmission "TCM" software. This appears to has made the transmission much smoother shifting. It has also been warmer here since the original complaint therefore it is hard to tell if that made a difference.

TLX 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,500 miles

I had these issues from day one - the middle of December 2015. As just about everyone else says on this message board - in a cold start the car has a "Hard" and "Delayed" shift between reverse and drive. In the first few minutes during a cold start - if I come to a complete stop - the car will lurch forward as if it is being hit from behind. It's almost like it transitions from 3rd gear right into first after stopping. When accelerating from a full stop the car will "start up" in second or third before shifting to 1st. When holding the pedal steady during routine driving the car will sometimes shift and the RPM's will shift up or down with the gear change. This last symptom seems to happen any time not just during cold starts. Overall the shifting between gears is never completely as seamless as it was with any of the Acura's I test drove or my previous TSX from 2004.

I took the car for servicing today, the 23rd of January 2015. The service people at Ed Voyles Acura in Atlanta waited for the car to cool down and started it cold. After trying it themselves, my service guy acknowledged the issue saying "We know Acura's and our cars are not supposed to drive like that". But they said there is nothing they can do for me at this point. They claim that the issue is a software error between the transmission control and the engine control. They said Acura is aware of the issue and is working on a "Patch" for the software. It's expected out in February 2015. I told them I read that a patch was out January 5th and they told me that was incorrect. They told me that my car's software is currently up to date despite being bought on December 15th, 2014.

Anyone out there have any suggestions? I read on someone else's post there was a patch out January 5th. Was it for the TLX 2.4 8 speed? Was Ed Voyles service wrong? Or was the patch out for a different car? What did I misunderstand?

Thanks

Update from Jan 26, 2015: The Acura dealership I leased the vehicle from has told me a software update will be available by the second week in February. He says that it should completely rectify the problem. The GM of the dealership has told me that if the problem persists he'll work to try and get me out of the lease. I wait for Mid-February...

Update from Feb 27, 2015: A week after having the patch installed there is a noticeable improvement. It's about 75% of the way there. However, I do still notice that lunging forward just before the vehicle comes to a complete stop. There is another patch due out in the next few weeks.

  • Automatic transmission

After driving 1 mile or so and coming to a complete stop, especially during cold start, the transmission lurches forward very hard ( like someone rear ended). A few times, a big bang is sounded from the transmission.

When slowing down, say coming to a traffic light and not coming to complete stop and making right or left turn at say about 10mph speed or so, and hit on the gas pedal to speed up, the transmission hesitates and doesn't know which gear to engage thus making very jerky feel.

Same issues that everyone is posting in regards to jerky transmission. Unacceptable for a new car so I had the dealer take a look. They insisted it was a "hill-response feature, keeps the car from rolling down hills when your foot is off both the accelerator and brake" but said they would check it out. Received a call the next day that I had a faulty transmission and the entire thing needed to be replaced. Corporate was called and new transmission was being shipped from CA, would be about two weeks. We are going on week three and part just arrived today.

Transmission replacement in a 2015 model with 4000 miles. Awesome. Buyers beware!!

TLX Tech I-4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 650 miles

wife's car so I don't drive it much. It's an I-4 and 8 speed transmission and was in 'ECO" mode at time of incident. (Transmission has four modes, ECO,NORMAL, SPORT, AND SPORT +) I drove on 12/18/14, from a cold start in my heated garage, I went about 300 yards to a stop sign. When accelerating from stop sign transmission hesitated and went up and down the first 2 or 3 gears before finally finding first gear. This transmission is an 8 speed (I-4 engine) and it sure feels like a CVT with programmed shift points, not an old fashioned geared transmission. A bit like a rubber band effect. I'll be seeing the dealer soon.

David O., I did test drive a V-6 with 9 speed transmission. It is a different transmission, feels like a DSG to me. I noticed it was difficult to drive smooth in slow, stop and go traffic, jerking every time I got up to 10 mph and lifted off the throttle. Then on hwy. at 60 mph, trying to pass I experienced a reluctance to down shift. As I pressed the accelerator more and more, transmission just would not down shift until floored, then it finally took off. Not smooth and predictable. The I-4 transmission feels far different, has faster shifts just not the smooth power of the v-6.

I reported the problem to Acura through the dealer and Client services and this problem has become wide spread according to sources in the dealership with colder weather. Still waiting on a solution from Acura. I should have bought the tried and truce tested Accord!
