sunroof shattered

I just returned from a week of vacation and had my new Audi Q5 which I have loved driving, parked just outside our garage in a safe sleepy suburb of Minneapolis with NO overhanging trees or obstruction. Thankfully the weather was unseasonably warm and dry as I returned today to find the sunroof shattered almost directly in the center of the front part of the sunroof. The "fabric" shade thankfully held all the pieces and did not tear. There were very fine pieces of glass on the leather below. I was shocked. There was NO evidence of any vandalism, the car remained lock, nothing was disturbed inside the car. Cracks emanate all over from the main break but there are two odd long "crack lines" that parallel the windshield and the driver's side of the door on the part of the sunroof that remains intact. Curiously the edges of the roof around the break were not "depressed" but actually looked elevated, as if it broke from inside. I now see that there are other similar reports of spontaneous sunroof break is in the Q5 Audi 2012 sunroof. I will need to take my Q5 into the dealership here in the Minneapolis Area, Carousel Audi. I've been very pleased with all their service in the past, owning a 2008 A4, and on that basis, decided to purchase another Audi from the same dealership. As this is Sunday night, I do not know how they will respond but will keep you posted. I was disappointed to read that dealerships out East were not "owning" this problem!

Update from Jan 17, 2012: I contacted my dealership the following morning, they were aware of this problem, and towed my Q5 into the dealership, ultimately replacing the entire sunroof/shade mechanism. I had a loaner Audi A4 brought to me that day at my office and drove that the remainder of the week. By Friday (car was towed on Monday) , my Q5 was ready to be picked up. The "fix" is replacing the sunroof. I was told there is a "tolerance problem on the front panel of the sunroof". I had follow up calls from a centralized Audi customer service rep and heard there was sunroof glass that was not to standard, and I also heard there was a seal problem on the sunroof. It may be a combination. I was pleased with Audi's rapid response to the issue and hope that other cars with the same issue are identified and repaire before the issue occurs! While frustrating on a new Q5, Audi handled my situation with urgency and kept me posted daily as to when it would be completed.

Today when I got into my Q5 with my two small children, shards of broken glass rained down on us when I closed the front door. I looked up to find the front of the sunroof completely shattered. Thankfully, none of us were hurt. I suspect it's a design flaw and related to the cold temperatures.. 14 degrees F last night. It's going to the dealer tomorrow. Found many similar complaints elsewhere online. Looks like Audi has a huge problem on their hands.

I have a 2012 Audi Q5, 2.2T. We were on a ski holiday for New Year. The temp dropped to 12 degrees, which I guess affects the glass. As I closed the trunk the air pressure blew out the front glass of the sun roof with the result that heavy pieces of glass fell into the front of the car. Spoke to the nearest (40 miles away, in Burlington) Audi garage and was told that he had two Q5s with the same problem and that replacement glass would not be available for a week. We got a local garage to patch up the roof and drove back to Manhattan. When I contacted Audi services, they claimed not to have seen this problem before and told me I'll probably have to claim on insurance. Not only did this cut our family vacation short but the reaction from Audi was unsatisfactory --they should cover my costs under the warranty. This is a potentially dangerous design fault that needs to be sorted out!!

This happened today while on vacation in VT 250 miles from home. Took several calls (local dealer, my dealer in Boston, roadside assistance, and finally audi customer relations, plus very angry threats before I got someone who agreed to come tow my car back to Boston and provide a loaner.. Local dealer said this was second call today with same issue, and I found same complaint from the other day on line posted by someone in montreal. I love the car otherwise, it's just 8 weeks old, but I hope the pass the buck type response I initially got was an aberration. Very disappointing.
