The purpose of having a Timing Chain vs. Timing Belt is because it's supposed to be more durable and have a longer longevity. This issue with the Timing Chain designs are very common problems on all the 3.6L V6 (LY7) engines on all the vehicles with this Timing set-up. The vehicles with this design include the models SRX, CTS and STS from model years 2004 until 2008, to the best of my knowledge anyway. Cadillac did preform one VIN specific recall regarding this matter that extended its warranty coverage to about 10 years/120,000 miles on this Timing Chain issue. This recall ONLY applied to certain VIN specific vehicles and ONLY the model years 2007 and 2008. Of course my 2005 Cadillac STS wasn't protected by this recall, or any other recall for that matter, even though it only has 80,000 miles on it.
