The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500. While driving various speeds, the vehicle decelerated independently and the reduced engine power, service engine, and traction assist indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to don hewlett Chevrolet Buick (7601 N interstate hwy 35, georgetown, tx 78626) where it was diagnosed that the accelerator pedal failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to don hewlett Chevrolet where it was diagnosed that the electronic throttle control module failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the sensors failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred once again. The vehicle was taken to autonation Chevrolet laurel (500 Washington blvd, laurel, md 20707) where it was diagnosed that the throttle body needed to be rebuilt, the tac module needed to be replaced, and the intake gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure continued. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that they could not assist. The contact was transferred to NHTSA. The approximate failure mileage was 24,000.

2002 Chevy Avalanche 2500 with 8.1 engine dies without warning at driving speeds. The battery light comes on, after the vehicle shuts down, but no check engine light and no warning whatsoever. The vehicle just shuts down. When this happens there is no power steering and no brakes for this 7000 pound vehicle. Sometimes, once pulled over and shutting everything off and trying to restart it will restart, sometimes taking up to 10 minutes of trying to crank it intermittently before it will restart. It has done this, off and on, at random intervals over the years I have owned it. I have read on the internet others from who have the same problem and most likely solution seems to be the crankshaft position sensor which some say has been recalled on the 2001 model engine for the Silverado, but cannot find anything for the same 2002 engine, which is the same engine. This is dangerous and frightening enough at "back road" speeds, but considerably more so at major highway speeds as the vehicle loses all power when the engine shuts down, leaving the driver unable to steer, brake or immediately restart the vehicle leaving it stalled in the middle of the interstate there is no code in the ECM so the dealers have not been able to diagnose it. Does someone have to die before something is done?

The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the fuel pump, battery, and starter were changed; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the starter was replaced again; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

Engine stall with loss of steering and brakes when turning from tower oaks St onto jones road, a busy 4 lane road. Car stopped in oncoming lane on jones road, just avoiding a head on collision. Crankshaft sensor failure. Had car towed to dealer who infomed me that there was no recall on the crankshaft sensor of the chevrolete Avalanche paid dealer $540. For cransshaft sensor replacement. Have not had a stalling problem sence replacing the cranshaft sensor. This is a very dangerous situation and can cause severe accidents as the loss of steering and brakes is critical.

While driving at 65 mph the engine cut out. Could be the crankshaft position sensor. The truck is a 2500 with an 8.1L engine. Similar issues that the 2001 was recalled for. Same engine and cps as the 2001 but not included in the original recall. This has happened several times at various speeds.

The engine will die at any time with out warning. This happens fairly often. Sometimes after trying to restart it will restart with no delay and other times it will take a few minutes. Then it will run normally for no specific amount of time. Then it will die again. Incidences may occur hundreds of miles in between. The dealer says they don't know why it would do this and it would be very difficult to diagnose the problem because it happens spontaneously and it usually restarts quickly. This is very dangerous and turning the vehicle to get off the road when the engine dies is very hard to do.

The engine shuts off while driving. The vehicle had been idling for several minutes and after pulling out across the highway the engine shut off. After trying for at least 10 minutes it restarted. Thought this was an isolated instance, but has now happened multiple times at various speeds and even when idling at a stop light.

While driving at 65 on the freeway truck began to lose power and when I stepped on gas it didn't respond. Had to keep letting foot off and back on to get it to go. Pulled over to the shoulder turned truck off and it ran good for about 3 minutes and it repeated itself. When engine gets hot the truck loses power and you have to shut it off and repeat this step until you get to where you gotta go. No codes, no warning no nothing. Truck also shuts off while driving. Replaced fuel pump, filter, cleaned maf and throttle body replaced crank shaft sensor and it still does this.

The first time this happened I was going home from work on the freeway. I was going 65 mph and my engine died I had no power steering and the brake pedal was very hard to push. I was able to put my truck in neutral and restart it. The second time the engine died I was sitting at a red light and it shut off. The third time it happened I was going home from work, just got off the freeway and stopped at the red light. When the light turned green I made a left and was going to the next light to make a right and the engine died. I tried to put the brakes on, but they were very tight and I had no power steering. I had to fight to turn the wheel and just made the turn without hitting the other traffic.
