2004 Chevy Avalanche..speedometer registering 55mph...running approx. 75mph to 80mph...or more....when decelerating...moves downward in clicking motion..accelerates in clicking motion...there is constant clicking/ticking noise behind panel..called GM...will not acknowledge issue...insulting as I am GM stockholder...had considered this year's trade to Hummer...now considering foreign...no wonder they are in trouble...claim have to replace entire instrument panel at excess of $400 ! this is a safety issue in the truest sense of the word !

Avalanche

  • 80,000 miles
My 2004 Avalanche speedometer and tachometer read completely inaccurate. Example=shows me going 120mph and 3000M RPM with motor off. I bought the vehicle used from a Chevy dealer and was told it had warranty remaining. When the problem began last year I was told it was not warranted. I lacked the money for the replacement and have been driving it broken. Now I am finding out through other Avalanche owners that it has been being fixed by dealers at no charge as there have been so many problems. I feel this should be a recall. I know my vehicle now has 110,000 miles, but I can document by law enforcement notes on a ticket I received last year that I had the problem about 30,000 miles ago. I feel this should be repaired at no expense to me. They told me when I called that their parts dept had a long waiting list for the replacement panel so you know ?Chevrolet knew they had a widespread problem. Thank you. I hope to hear back from you. Also at about the same time my ABS/brake light started coming on after I drive a few miles. I don't know if it is as common of a problem or related to the instrument panel problem or not.

The speedometer on my 2004 Avalanche (cluster) is failing. It reads 120 mph when it is idling and shows the same when im doing 60-65 mph. I bought the car used (with 25,000) and currently it has 108,000. This is ridiculous! its a common problem thought the state, why isn't it being replaced free !

Avalanche

  • 80,000 miles
Failure has occurred twice on my 2004 Avalanche surrounding the inefficiencies within my dash board. The speedometer was reading incorrectly. It was very dangerous as the accurate speed was not reporting. I was able to get this replaced at about 40,000 miles. Recently, the gas gauge is not working correctly. After filling up the tank and taking a road trip the gas gauge immediately reported an empty gas reading. The gas gauge continues to read incorrectly and fluctuates. I have contacted the company to find out that there is a service warranty on the vehicle up to about 70,000 miles. Currently my truck is at 86000 miles all due to highway traffic to work (30 miles each way). I do not feel that I should expense this cost since this is clearly a factory issue. Regardless of the number of miles on the vehicle if it is a known defect it should be covered. This is very dangerous as I could run out of gas on the road. This is also very disappointing as this depicts the quality of the vehicle. My father has bought nothing but Chevrolet's over the years and states how efficient the vehicles are. In addition I have already replaced the entire dash board once from the first incident surrounding the speedometer to have received another defective dash board surrounding the gas gauge.

I own a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. The speedometer began going out at 60,000 miles, and now the gas gauge and tachometer occasionally fail. I have 123,000 miles on my vehicle. The local dealer, ryan Chevrolet, informed me that GM would have fixed it prior to 72,000 miles. I found this out after 85,000 miles.

Avalanche 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 105,000 miles
The speedometer had stopped working on my 04 Avalanche. Not realizing this and traveling at night with no traffic I had gotten pulled over for speeding. Once I had stopped and noticed the gage was stuck at 60mph I showed it to the officer and he let me go. I realize there is a recall out for this if the vehicle has less than 70K miles but I am over that because of the amount of driving I do for my job. This could be a serious problem and should be covered for a longer period of time, or all clusters should be changed because they will fail at one point.

I own a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche. My speedometer cluster recently stopped working all together. I have called the Chevrolet place and they are saying it will be very expensive to fix. Then one told me that there was a recall on this. But it was for 7 years or 70 thousand miles. I just bought the truck and it was over the mileage when I purchased the vehicle. What can I do to get this fixed, with out breaking my bank."?" please help me out on this......

The speedometer on my 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche 1500 2wd works erratically. When driving, it fails to work accurately on and off. This can lead to excessive speeds. General Motors seems to ignore the hundreds of these complaints and has not issued any accurate repair instructions or a recall.

My 2004 Chevy Avalanche's speedometer has been sticking on 65 for a week now. Today it completely went out and stays on 0 mph now. I have no idea what I am going to do now other than not drive it until I can afford to repair it. Every bit of research I have done on this matter shows that thousands of other people are having the same problem. I baby my truck and take excellent care of it. It has 66,000 miles on it.
