Avalanche

  • 65,000 miles
I have an 07 Chevy Avalanche that has a cracked dash around the airbag area. A web search will reveal that this is a common problem across GM vehicles. In my mind this problem renders the vehicle unsafe because the crack has jeopardized the integrity of the dashboard. GM needs to recall and fix the dashboards free of charge.

Driving on a normal paved road I heard two fairly loud "pop" sounds. Stopped and pulled over to see if I could find source of the sounds. Nothing had fallen, no windows broken, but noticed 2 cracks on upper dashboard where the passenger airbag resides. Pressed on that area and was able to see the dash had completely cracked apart and was "flopping". proceeded to drive and in next mile another "pop" sound occurred, this time it was an even larger crack on the left side of the dash near the instrument panel, and the entire top portion of the dash drivers side to passenger side was now bouncing up and down by about 1-2inches. I fear if the drivers A-pillar side airbag or the passenger main airbag are deployed, that fragments and large pieces of the hard dash plastic can be thrown at high-speed to people in the cabin...this is not acceptable as a safety concern. I attempted a resolution thru GM, who wanted almost $1000 to do the repair, even though the acknowledge its a common problem, they do not seem willing to come to a common resolution. My dash has broken/cracked in the same place as others have reported. The crack is located behind the air bag lid starts near the middle of the air bag lid and extends to the edge of the dash. The air bag could possibly rip if it were to catch on the sharp edge that is exposed. First replacement of the dash was in may of 2009 and has cracked again in the same location in February 2014.

My dash is cracked right at the top left of my passenger airbag. My dash is also cracked on the left side of the dash near steering column. The are hundreds of online forms with the same issues with the same vehicle all you have to do is type in Avalanche dash board cracks in a search engine. My big issue is I can not get any Chevy dealer to tell me the crack will not affect the deployment of the airbag. This a big safety concern if I get in a accident.

The dashboard on my Avalanche has developed a fairly significant crack right next to the passenger side airbag. The crack starts from towards the windshield side and leads up to and terminates at the crevice where the airbag is located. This in my opinion jeopardizes the integrity of the airbag. The concerns are that (a) the airbag may not deploy in the intended direction (B) may get ruptured due to making contact with the sharp edges of the crack or (C) may deploy unintentionally due to the weakness of the material holding it in place. This is a safety issue and GM needs to address it as such.

Avalanche

  • 72,000 miles
Around the May 2012 timeframe I had to take my 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche in to a local dealership for service to the cracked dashboard near the passenger side air bag. The dealership agreed that this was a defective issue through out a number of other GM models. The dealership agreed to replace the dashboard at no charge. This week on 9 December 2013 I noticed another crack in the new dashboard. Just slightly over a year this has happened again but this time in a new location. This crack is on the drivers side near the front of the windshield near the VIN number plate to the base of the instrument cluster. This crack in the past two days is opening more and more everyday. On 10 December the crack has now formed a "V" shape and has split to towards the drivers door. I took the vehicle in today and the dealership, the same dealership that replaced the dashboard the first time, said no and that they could no longer help me and recommended to me that I just get a "cover" to not see it and bother me. I paid nearly $40,000 for the truck and keep very good care of it. I feel that these cracks are a safety concern that should be addressed and fixed. The dealerships around the country have acknowledged that this is an issue and they will no longer help. Other owners like me are having this issue and we need help to get our vehicles fixed. Please help all of us in getting this issue fixed as soon as possible.

GM has a safety issue with dashboards cracking near where the airbag deploys on the passenger side of the vehicles. There is also cracking on the left side of the instrument pod. All cracks are in identical areas of these same model years and newer. This is my second dash board that has to be replaced.

The dash is cracked next to the airbag on passenger side. Manufacturer refuses to fix or replace without the consumer taking responsibility and paying for replacement. This is a one owner vehicle, garage parked, dash-mat since first acquired truck. This seems to be a very widespread problem for GM vehicles of the same make and other similar vehicles. I have a huge safety concern that the airbag upon deployment will be ruptured and become ineffective due to the crack in the dash possibly puncturing the airbag. It is also very evident that this is a manufacturing flaw that GM will not stand up for and take responsibility.

Avalanche 8-cyl

  • 36,000 miles
Cracked dashboard on passenger side where airbag is fitted. Upper lefthand side of airbag. Traction control/stabilitrac system: Service indicator warnings activate, switches from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive high even though selector is in 2wd mode. The first occurrence of this was at 70K miles, then again at 90K. Then again at 97K the transmission was damaged and needed to be replaced. Again at 101K miles the ringgear in the rear axel was destroyed. Rear axel was replaced. Fifth time for those counting, 116K miles service stabilitrac and service traction control warnings, switching from 2wd to 4WD high while moving, while parked, selector in 2wd position with someone at the wheel or cab empty. Evaporative emission control warning. Check engine light on, code comes back to eec. Indicating a leak in the return line. The first time this was replaced at 70K miles, this is the second time. And no it is not the gas cap being loose or needing replaced. The first time there was "water in the connector" (yeah sure).

Cracked dashboard directly above airbag on passenger side on 2007 Z71 Avalanche (original owner). This is apparently a manufactures defect and is apparently happening on numerous GM vehicles for this model year. GM is unwilling to fix saying it is not a defect and is only cosmetic and will not fix.

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche tailgate handle broke while opening tailgate. Many GM trucks seem to have this problem. Dealer did not have it in stock. The dealer recommended but they do not carry Avalanche parts. This problem happened on our last Avalanche a 2005, when it turned 4 years old also. Judging from just doing a google tailgate handle search, this seems to be a widespread problem through many model years and trim levels. My 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche ltz has been in the shop 10X for grinding and squeaking noises coming from the right front wheel. The dealership stated they cannot duplicate this even though their service tech's heard it twice. The brakes have been replaced and the rotors re-surfaced, with the problem beginning @ 22,000 miles and continuing to this day at 44,000. The sound has been caught on video several times at different mileages but GM continues to state that it is not a concern to them. The sound begins slowly as the truck picks up speed it increases and then finally disappears at @ 35mph.

Avalanche

  • 40,000 miles
The dash cracked on my Avalanche as I was sitting at a light right by the passenger airbag. This truck is very well taken care of, and it happened just outside of the 36,000 mile warranty. The dash is only cosmetic, but I am concerned about the stability of the airbag at this point, and if I get into a crash that the airbag will come loose or the dash break into many pieces. These cracks are an issue on Avalanche, Tahoe, and Suburban, and there have been many complaints so far. GM is not helping and considers this cosmetic only. There are very serious potential safety issues with the airbag.
