Aveo 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 58,200 miles

i have a 2004 chevy aveo 1.6L 4Cyl and at only 58,000 miles the belt tensioner stoped working which caused 8 of my cylinders to get bent which ended up costing me $1,500 to fix the problem,i got lucky that when my car broke down i was driving 25mph and i heared a weired noise i pulled over right away ,or else the pistons on my car might have broke and then i would of had to get a new engine which probably would have cost me three times as much. At such a low milege i dont why it broke down on me at of nowhere every three months i would change the oil and checked if every thing was ok.

Aveo LX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

The timing belt broke and I had the engine head and valves totally redone. Now at 85,000 miles the timing belt broke again and now I am told I need a new engine. There has to be some remedy to this situation as I cannot believe I only have 20K on a replaced upper motor and now the same problem and the whole motor is destroyed.

I will NEVER buy an American car again. Is there anything I can do about this travesty? Please help as I cannot afford a new car at this time and cannot afford to keep replacing engines as well. I was very faithful in maintaining the car as well. Please help me!

This car was for my Daughter in college. She was driving along minding her own business and WHOOLLAAWWW the car stopped! Take it to the dealer who states it will cost 2700 dollars to fix. No warning, no notice from my dealer that I need to change this timing belt at 50,000 miles.. I wish I would have done research prior to the car going bad!!! It horrible and now I have to ship my daughter my other car or pay the loan shark (Chevy) to fix it.

If anyone can give me assistance in how to fight GM for costs of engine rebuild

due to premature timing belt failure--please contact me at my e-mail susannpowell@hotmail.com with necessary info to get GM to stand behind the inferior "daewoo" sold as CHEVY and pay the damages incurred by their far inferior $15.00 timing belt--which would be the consumers repair in most cases--NOT the engine rebuild that follows such "interference" engine type calamities!!! Please, I really need some documentation of what GM can and will do...the Lander Motors dealership where I bought this Krummy K. KAR will do nothing about the $9995.00 cash invested and is "sorry" that I only put 8000 miles on it since the purchase!!! They are a fast growing monopoly throughout the Wyoming area...a new super-store of Fremont Motors is opening next week!! I hope people as dissatisfied as myself will join me there to witness this coming event!! I plan on wearing a "sign"

Aveo 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 31,000 miles

My Chevy Aveo 04 just stopped on me. I have own this car for over five years and the warranty is out. I had a mechanic tell me it is the timing belt. I could not believe this was the problem because it only has 31,000 miles on it. It will cost me over a thousand to get it fix. I had a toyota that ran for 11 years ,and I never had a problem of this kind. I will never buy a Chevy car again. I hear this is a problem with these cars. This might be a factory defect and it should be covered for free, warranty or not.

Aveo 1.6L

water pump bearing stuck and timing belt slip out, engine valves bent, i call the dealer, got a new engine cost $5500 canadian dollars. buy a used engine, would cost around $1500 canadian dollars, but take risk. so, rebuilt the engine seems the cheapest way and reliable, cost around $1500 canadian dollars (including change a new water pump, tensioner pulley, idle pulley, and almost 12 valves, 6 intake valves and 6 exhaust valves).

Aveo 1.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 46,000 miles

This is in reference to the 2004 Chevy Aveo timing belt breakage. Basically, the owner must have it replaced at the 60,000 mile maintenance interval. Should breakage occur prior to that, IT IS covered under the power train warranty. Also, should the break occur before the 60,000 mile interval, the owner IS entitled to reimbursement. Finally, an inspection of the belt IS NOT required prior to the 60,000 mile replacement. I have a copy of the TSB which outlines all of this. If you would like a copy, please feel free to e-mail me at dyeazell@hotmail.com, and I will make a copy available to you.

Aveo

  • Automatic transmission
  • 80,000 miles

My cute little Chevy Aveo was running just fine .. until the timing belt went out of timing. It was very costly to learn that my timing belt problem ruined my entire engine. So costly it is not worth fixing. This is devastating to me. I placed numerous calls to GMAC .. yet they had no empathy .. no sympathy. The dealer I bought it from said "I guess you got a bad one." The dealer never told me how important it was to get timing belts changed. The only time I had a timing belt go bad in a car was once .. and it was a simple fix (Ford Mustang) .. simply change the timing belt. NOT TRUE with the Chevy Aveo .. it destroys your entire engine. I am devastated. I still owe a little bit on my car .. there is NO WAY to pay to have the car fixed and also meet the car payments. Hard times going on here. And I will NOT buy another car from GM .. they have done nothing to help me. I even asked them if they would consider putting the car repair bill onto the balance of my loan (if I chose to have it repaired) and nope .. no help from them at all.

To all of you with Aveo's ... CHECK YOUR TIMING BELT .. have it changed ... so you are not in a desperate situation like I am.

Aveo LS 1.6L 4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 58,000 miles

I was only merely bugged by this (in the beginning). I've never had a timing belt break before, but then again, I have them replaced at the recommended intervals. We were getting really close to the 60,000 mile recommend replacement... but with Christmas coming, I thought I'd wait until afterwards... Whelp, we didn't make it to the 60,000 mile point; it snapped, damaging the valve train. I was told that I would have to replace the head with a remand part. After being revived from hearing the cost, I decided to Google and ebay the engine information. This is when I started to get really p-o'd. Try googling the "aveo timing belt failure", youll find (literally) countless others who had suffered this same failure. I take very good care of the cars we have and I feel that even though this was a lower-cost vehicle...I shouldn't be stuck with having to buy a "wrecker" engine. But that's what I did, because it was cheaper than having the dealer fix the original engine. I trusted GM to acknowledge the problem after showing them 30 printouts of the exact failure...but they just wanted to sell me a new car (yeah, like I'll ever buy another vehicle from them again!). No wonder they are in such financial shape; they deserve it!

(reported on)

Aveo 1.6L I-4

  • Manual transmission
  • 62,000 miles

This problem is systemic in all Daewoo 1.6L engines including the Chevrolet Aveo. Go to your dealer and insist on EARLY replacement of the timing belt at 45000 miles to avoid a very expensive repair. The failure of the timing belt caused bent valves and cracked pistons which means a total engine overhaul or the purchase of a new engine. If this happens to you, ask the Chevrolet dealership to look up technical service bulletin number 3936 (NHTSA No.: 10020573). It details the problem and Chevrolet's liability. Chevrolet is hiding this failure information as a lot of these failures are happening just outside the warranty period. Be sure to push them for total compensation as they are 100% liable!!!
