Cavalier LS 2.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 151,243 miles

my fuel level was low, but not out. my car started sputtering and the engine quit. I was able to pull off the highway in time and coast into a parking space. I though maybe the fuel indicator was off and added a couple gallons of gas. Then I though I flooded the engine after fuel was added and key pressed 1/2 way to start. No dice, and a few weeks later the starter crumbled, positive terminal and some of the starter just crumbled off.

Problem: Fuel pump, very expensive to replace. OK the car had 150K miles on it but still, fuel pump? I had never even heard of this as a reason a car wouldn't start.

Can't believe this is a common experience, and even less miles and newer model years.

Same thing happened to my wife's cavalier around 160K. well maintained by fuel pump, also near empty, Co-incidence? Not sure but am filling up at 1/4 tank now.

Will never buy another American car. Both cars have had a hub cap fly off too, as well as a chevy rental. Never again chevy! And I was considering a Volt before the dual fuel pump incident and volt test vehicle explosions after the fact from traumatized lithium ion cells.

Cavalier 2.2

I purchased the car the end of april, was a great car until around june. Car was not wanting to start, took it to advance and they said my battery needed replaced, so i bought a new one. Still didn't fix the car. Wouldn't start so i replaced the starter, still didn't fix the problem. Make a long story short, i've replace the battery 3 times, the starter 3 times, and an alternator. and i'm still having problems. The car will sometimes start but once it does, runs perfect. If i turn it off, it will not start unless it has sat for several hours. I need a jump almost every time i turn the car off, its like its not getting any gas, but seems like the battery is dead. And the alternator seems like its not charging the battery. I'm exhausted with this car and have no clue what the problem is. people have mentioned a short somewhere but that's like finding a needle in a haystack. I'm just out of ideas.

The problem occurs when the car is turned off for about 5 to 10 minutes. If I wait an hour the car starts "on a dime". If I restart the car in a few minutes (like the time it takes to fill it with gas) it starts "on a dime". All the electric comes on but there is just silence.

It seems like it is the fuel injector. It runs, but every once in a while it won't start. After the new fuel injector the next day it wouldn't start. It starts and you drive it awhile and you stop and try it after about 15 minutes and it won't start. If you leave it for approx 2 or 3 hours it will start again. Problem keeps reoccurring. We put in a new ignition switch and the problem is still occurring. The Chevrolet dealer can't figure it out and now I have it at a private mechanic and he has checked over all of the electrical system and he installed the ignition switch. Still it doesn't work. It starts and you can run it for quite a while, but if you stop and let it sit for 10 or 15 minutes it won't start again. It is driving both my mechanic and I nuts. Does anyone have any solutions?

Cavalier LS

Frustration to the MAX, My 2000 Cavalier LS has a starting problem. Cold or at operating temperature it is very very hard to start, taking up to 10 minutes or more at times. If it is the least bit humid or wet out, look out. If I drive a short distance and stop, starting again is a nightmare. The dealer has replaced everything in the fuel delivery system to include the fuel pump (at my suggestion). This morning as an example, with a full tank of gas and a new fuel pump, it acted as if the fuel/air mixture was off and the main vehicle computer was being sent the wrong information. I just get a air rush sound but no start until after many tries. The vehicle starter and battery are wearing out. The mystery is, the vehicle runs fine once started but to get it to start AHHHHHHHHH. If anyone out there has a similiar problem, any help would be appreciated. The next steps are a visit to a private garage or finding a cliff to drive it off of before the "will it start or will I need a tow" psychological stress becomes too much. thanks!
