The contact owns a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu. While driving 70 mph the vehicle decelerated to 50 mph and then shuts off completely. The contact was forced to merge onto the median in order to avoid the busy intersection. The technician stated that the failure could have been caused by the signal light. The contact stated that no other failures occurred since the vehicle left the shop. The current and failure mileage were 50,000.

I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu. As many Malibu owners my car has the same issues. Blower fan doesn't work on setting 1 and 2, rear speakers don't work in cold weather, rear tail lights don't always work, weird braking issues in the cold, and air circulation button changes from closed to open automatically. These are just some electrical issues with the car and I think I found the root cause. The windshield rubber seal on my car was unattached from the window outside at the bottom on the passenger side. I found out because after a heavy rain a lot of water was showing on the floor of the passenger side. The water damages has been happening for years. I found water sitting in the plastic molding right under the blower fan. Water corroding the electrical cables on the floor. Water tracks over the computer board located under the glove box. I've informed Chevrolet and ask for them to create a tsb but they denied my request.

Hazard and turn signal works intermittently, I found that a recall on my make of car was issued in 2003, parts no available till 2004, due to losing my home in hurricane ivan my mail was messed up for quite some time, I am having this problem and would like to know if it would be covered. We replaced bulbs and fuses but problem still there, I can tap or hold the hazard button and turn signals will work for a moment. This is a 2000 Malibu with appr. 74,000 miles. All warranty work and oil changes has always been kept up, I would like to know if my car falls in the recall.

On the way to the hospital the car died 21 times. It was acting like it was running out of gas. Had a full tank. We would sit for a time (5, 10, 15 or so minutes) and the car would start and run 10 feet or a few miles. On the way home from the hospital it died another 15 times and we called a tow truck. We have replaced the map sensor & fuel relay switch. With the tow and parts and labor we continue to get stranded. The garage tested the car and the computer gave no code. We are afraid to drive it any distance for fear of breaking down again. We just want it fixed.

I have already filed complaint in regards to the hazard light recall, which for some reason does not cover my 2000 Malibu. I noticed other complaints on the Malibu and figured I would throw my two cents in. I to have had to drop over $1000 dollars into the most defective car I have purchased this includes the $200 piece of junks I bought when I was a teenager. My list of problems. 1. coolant system leak cost $700 note: Mechanic laughed and said this happens all the time is this type of engine. In reviewing other complaints, the one really stands out. Nice I am glad GM owns up to its problems. 2. brakes constantly need to be replaced well below mileage. Glad GM saved a few bucks under sizing the rotors. 3. within a year the fans switch (levels 1,2) and lighter stopped working. Boy GM is saving lots money now. 4. within the past year I had fuel pump failure, nothing like traveling in rush hour traffic doing 75mph and car totally dieing. Boy GM has made one quality car. 5. the last insult, my first and likely last GM product is when I thought boy I finally get something from GM in regards to one small defect, the hazard switch, I find out that my vehicle is not covered by this recall. Wow not only I am out at least $1000 bucks on piece of crap product, GM does not even want to give a bone to hungry man. With this type of product it is no wonder GM is losing market share faster than any other automotive company. Keep up the good work GM. Clearly the are some serious defects with this vehicle and the gms ownership with defects.

We unfortunately own a 2000 Chevy Malibu. We have already replaced the rotors several times for going out of round. We have also replaced the fuel pump at less then 50,000 miles at the cost of $728. The air conditioner pops on and off on its own not cooling for the most part. The turn signals are nonfunctional and our VIN number is not included in the recall although it should be. Then there is the transmission slipping and the coolant leaking and the car overheating we are told this is a manifold intake gasket and will cost around $800 to fix. The newest problem is the factory installed radio tuner is burned out and now we have to replace the radio costing yet another $100 dollars or so this car has nickel and dimed us too much. After looking over your site I found these to be numerous complaints on the same year and model. I feel this car was a lemon across the board not just ours but, all 2000 Malibu's. please look into these cars on a whole they were very badly manufactured and we all deserve some compensation for it.

Intermittently when the brake pedal was applied, the brakes grabbed so hard that the entire vehicle vibrated severely. When this occurred, the vehicle failed to stop immediately. This resulted in extended stopping distance. The brake rotors warped. On one occasion this failure caused lost of control, in which the consumer almost crashed into an 18 wheeler, but was able to pull over to the medium. The dealership has acknowledged that there was a problem with the braking system, but was unable to correct the problem, and was now refusing to work on the vehicle. There was a rattle under the hood at the firewall area while the vehicle was in motion, the hose assembly was found rubbing under the vehicle, both front rotors had wore thin, the fuel pump sender did not hold the correct amount of fuel pressure, there was an open circuit in the 24X crank sensor, there was a rattle in the front suspension due to weak front lower control arms which were noisy (the right lower control arm was replaced), the coolant level sensor shorted, the water pump assembly leaked coolant, there was a vibration at highway speeds, hardware was bad and was loose in the caliper, rotor pulsation which was replaced per bulletin, the turn signal was inoperative, and the A/C had internal damage and would cut on and off.

Electronic computer module malfunctioning. Chevy Malibu 2000 is only four years old. This problem should not be happening. When starting the car all of the warning lights come on, fuel gage does not work, speedometer does not work, no heat or air conditioning blows, windows will not roll down, eventually all lights pop off except the check engine light and everything begins to work... windows, temperature, speedometer, fuel gage, etc...

While driving and/or attempting to use the turn signal, a short in the flasher switch made the turn signal inoperative and made other electrical components inoperative (ex. Gauges, radio and A/C fan). The electrical problem also caused the engine to stall. When the consumer pushed the flasher switch repeatedly the electrical components would work temporarily. The fuel pump was replaced to alleviate the stalling condition. The technician has identified a problem in the flasher switch but has not replaced it. A recall on the switch is scheduled to start later in 2004 however the consumer's vehicle is not included in the recall due to VIN.

Malibu 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 43,000 miles
I bought this car brand new (had 4 miles on it) in August of 2000. Within a month, the A/C motor had to be replaced. Within 6 months the engine began to surge, and felt like it was going to stall whenever at a stop. During this same period of time, the brakes began pulsating, and I replaced them on my own. I have not had an issue with them since. Then this year, 2003, it completely died on me while doing 70 in rush hour traffic on the freeway in san diego. My whole family was in the car, and we could have been killed. I couldn't even turn on the flashers to let other drivers know we were in trouble. Obviously, the power steering went out, and we had to cross three lanes of traffic, solely propelled by our existing momentum, without the ability to steer. I am beginning the process of trying to assess what the issue is, though I am sure it is the alternator. The battery was tested, and diagnosed as perfect, other than needing a full recharging (it was drained by another component). Once I determine what is wrong, I intend to go to Chevy, and harass them until they fix it. Then, I am going to try and enter into arbitration, and hopefully get rid of the car altogether. If anyone has the "solution" to the stalling problem, please email me ! mjaramillo @ excite. Com
