Malibu 2LT 2.0L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 37,000 miles

Around March of 2019 I started to receive the Shift to Park message on the console when I placed the car in Park but it went away after few seconds. This reoccurred about every 2-3 weeks; then after couple months it got worse and it would happen on weekly and daily drives. After searching multiple forums and youtube solutions, I decided to order the replacement shift assembly and replace it myself. It took me around three hours but I had no problem over the past six months since the shifter assembly was replaced.

So, if you want to do this on your own here are few links that helped me with center console removal and the rest you can figure out; quite simple.

This you tube link will help with center console removal (although it talks about airbag module replacement) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4uk1Hg1DfEg

This link is to the GM parts house for the shift assemble for my car (2016 Malibu 2LT 2.0L 8 Speed trans) https://www.gmpartshouse.com/oem-parts/gm-shifter-13520829?c=Zz1ib2R5JnM9Y2VudGVyLWNvbnNvbGUmbD0xMTMmbj1Bc3NlbWJsaWVzIFBhZ2UmYT1jaGV2cm9sZXQmbz1tYWxpYnUmeT0yMDE2JnQ9bHQmZT0yLTBsLWw0LWdhcw%3D%3D

If you have a different transmission or engine follow this link and look for your shift assembly. (Obviously you may need to start a fresh search if you have other than 2016 year Malibu.)

https://www.gmpartshouse.com/v-2016-chevrolet-malibu--lt--2-0l-l4-gas/body--center-console

(make sure to scroll down towards the bottom of the page to find shifter assemblies listed)

The shifter assembly is under BODY - Center Console if you need to locate it on the webpage for different year.

Hope this helps.

This has happened many times since I bought the car. When shutting off the engine, the display reads "shift to park" when it is already in park. Sometimes if I wait a while, it will go off, but sometimes I have to turn the car back on and off again until it doesn't happen again.

I have had this issue for several months but not consistently until recently. At first it was an annoyance. Now I am worried I will not be able to shut it off.

I called Hinton Chevrolet in Lynden, Washington where we paid cash for it and were told the warranty is up and we are out of luck. No help from them. The service tech pretty much said it is only affecting a few cars and is no big deal. I am fuming!!

Very disappointing that having problems with the computer system already. Just bought the vehicle recently and already have had two problems with the system and they vehicle doesn't even have 50,000 miles on it yet. Almost makes me want to keep my old 2002 Buick and sell this one. Will have to see how expensive these kind of problems are. Looks like this might be a common problem since they already had a recall relating to the shift to park already and others are complaining.

I've been getting this "Shift to Park" message for well over a year. Most of the time, you can restart the car, jiggle the gear shift and shut off the car and the message goes away. Sometimes you can hit the brake and jiggle the gear shift and the car will turn off. This error message comes and goes. It was fine for a while, but now it is acting up again. Why is there not a recall on this when it appears a lot of people are having this same issue?

When vehicle is put in Park message appears "Shift To Park" bells ring and lights flash.Vehicle will not shut down even though it says it is in park.Seems many Malibu owners have this problem. This is the first GM product I have owned in 20 years and if GM refuses to correct this problem with a recall it will be the last GM product I will ever buy even though my father was a GM retiree. I guess when their products are selling quality goes out the window. Next time sales tank, don't bail them out.

Every component on today's vehicles is controlled by the computers and sensors and if one fails it affects the complete system, a drop or increase in voltage causes problems for the complete system. Causing another component to fail. It could cause death, injury or damage!

When I would park my car and shift to park to turn the car off. A sign comes up for me to shift to park --- I had shifted to park however the car does not seem to know it so the sign says shift to park and will start dinging. When I called Kindred Chevrolet in Smithville, Mo., I was told that a lot of Chevy Malibus are having the same problem. When I parked my car in my garage on Monday July 8th 2019 It told me to shift to Park and started dinging. I could not leave my car dinging all night so it took me several tries to get the car to accept that I had shifted to Park. After many starting and shifting and starting again and shifting to park again and again it did finally stop dinging.

If there are so many Malibus with this problem -- why don't they do a recall. I am a woman and live alone. It was very upsetting to me to have this problem.

Malibu LT 4 cyl

Getting a "SHIFT TO PARK" warning message even though car is actually in park. Dealership states this is a known issue across multiple GM models but GM refuses to accept responsibility. Repair will cost $750.00 dollars and is not covered under an extended powertrain warranty. GM says this is an electronic part and is not part of the powertrain. How can the gear shifter not be considered as a part of the powertrain electronically controlled or not? This is nothing but a convenient excuse to hide a known problem and to avoid paying for your own mistake and you know it GM. It will be back to Toyota after this crap... GUARANTEED !!!

When I put the car in park its not like its registering to the car its parked. The engine turns off but all other system is still on . My radio and lights will not turn off. Its a pain cause you have to keep messing with it until it accepts that the car is in park. This is was brand new car when bought it in 2016, having problems with it now not cool .
