S-10 Pickup 4WD 8-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • miles
We own a 2000 S-10 ZR2. The original transmission had 42,000 miles (6000 miles out of warranty) when it failed. The 2nd transmission failed 1 year later as it only had 22,000 miles on it. We are now spending $2600 on a 3rd transmission and drivetrain problem. GM/Chevrolet refused to help us when we called in may of 2004. They claim since it was out of warranty they couldn't help. We didn't bother calling them again....please help us re-coup.

Reverse lockout mechanism is non-functional. Dealer indicated it is a design defect and is not repairable. Safety problem because transmission can accidently be put into reverse at highway speeds (70 mph ) causing complete transmission failure and loss of vehicle control. Reverse is on same leg as 5th gear overdrive. Emergency passing requires rapid down shifting to 4th gear or 3rd gear. I have used a 5th to 3rd gear emergency passing method since discovering the defect. The problem with 5th to 3rd is that 1st gear can accidently be selected. That will cause engine failure or loss of vehicle control. I would have pressed this issue with Chevrolet further but have not because it is a leased vehicle and is scheduled to be returned Jan 2003. I still do consider it a significant safety issue and owners should be made aware of the resulting dangers of this design defect.
