2002 Chevrolet Silverado with brake problems. The consumer stated the brakes and rotors had to be replaced twice. Also, the ABS needed to be replaced, but the part alone is $1,000 and the labor is $600. The ABS activated at low speeds.

After driving 400 miles to laurel springs, nc from baltimore, md through mountain roads and arriving at our destination my wife parked our truck, we got out to go in and open up the house. I then went back to the truck and got in to move it closer to the house to unpack our belongings for a weeks vacation. I started the vehicle and placed it in drive only to have the brakes go all the way to the floor. I then took a flashlight and had my son pump the brake pedal and brake fluid was gushing from the brakeline. I took a file and scraped what looks like little balls of rust and behind the ten or so balls found a hole the size of ball point pen tip.I then spent two days replacing the brake line form parts at the not so close auto zone. I find it hard to believe that 8 year old brake lines would rust that badly, I've had 20 year old vehicle S that didn't have brake lines rust out. I'm just lucky that the line broke after getting to my destination and not on the mountain roads we were traveling. I have the old brake line but left it at the house in nc.

As my wife pulled into her parking space at work, the brake pedal went to the floor. She was able to stop, got out and brake fluid was leaking from under the truck around the driver door area. Since she works at a GMC truck dealership she had one of the techs look at it and found a hole in one brake line and others corroded. They replaced 4 brake lines and one rear brake line due to corrosion. The truck is a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado.

I was pulling inot a parking space at dunkin donuts and when I applied the brake to stop it made a noise as if the anti-lock system was going to kick on but immediately stopped and my brake pedal froze stuck at the top of depression leaving me with no brake at all. I hit the cement stop bumper pole, luckily it was there, and caused damage to the front end of my truck.(bumper & framework). Good thing this occured here within a parking area and not out on the road at an intersection which I just went through. This was the first time this has happened but it makes me very weary of the braking system. I disconnected the fuse to the ABS system so this will not occur again until it is investigated further.

I live in Illinois but did not receive a recall notice from GM or my dealer. I called Chevrolet and they maintain there is no recall on my truck. This is a very dangerous issue.

I have a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado Z-71 pickup truck. I have 105,000 miles on it. When I'm at a low speed my anti-lock brakes activate for no reason and the truck wont stop. I have nearly been in several accidents. I have replaced the rotors and brakes and cleaned and regreased the ABS sensors and nothing has changed. Im, forced to take my vehicle to the dealership for repairs. As it turns out, this is a common problem on Chevy pickup trucks. This is a serious safety matter and needs to be looked into.

The ABS is engaging at low speeds when on dry pavement making my stopping distance longer. It has occurred approx 3-4 times over the last 5 days. This is the same problem that was addressed under NHTSA campaign id number : 05V379000. When that recall came out the issue was addressed by the dealer but now the same issue is occurring and General Motors is refusing to service the vehicle w/O any cost, saying they did what the recall required. I feel this is a safety issue that was not properly fixed when the recall came out. Thank you

I am the original owner of a 1500 series, 2002 Silverado, residing in South Florida. While exiting the ramp off the highway, at 50 mph, with a 7,600 pound car trailer in tow, I depressed the brake pedal, and it went to the floor! only with the use of the manual override of my electric trailer brakes was I able to stop, avoiding a near miss collision, and a serious, perhaps fatal accident. It was determined one of the brake lines leaked and failed as a "rust and corrosion". the vehicle had 52,300 at the time of the incident, and in Florida since purchasing new. With the help of a friend, a temporary repair was made using a compression fitting to allow us to continue our 90 mile trip home. The truck was taken to the dealership who confirmed "rust and corrosion" was the cause, however there were no recalls, or warranty, and I would be required to pay the cost of $738 to replace all the lines. At that time I had little choice but to authorize them to proceed. However after completion of the work and my inspection, the lines were installed using interconnecting fittings, at various locations, and not continuous lines as was originally supplied by the factory, nor was placement. I now question the safety of the repair. The dealership advised the work they performed was the method authorized by GM, and continuous lines were not available from the factory. This is probably because GM does not offer them, as the brake lines should have lasted the life of the truck. I have concluded that the material used for the brake lines were of very poor quality. I have contacted GM and continue to await a response from their engineering. The dealership has further advised there was nothing further they could do, and the GM area representative confirmed that with them. I question if it takes a number of deaths as a result of poor quality brake lines before GM takes some action. In searching the internet, I have found many reports relating to the same problem. So, what will GM do?

Hi, I have a 2002 Chevy Silverado I bought brand new. Today I hit the brakes pulling out of my driveway and the brake hit the floor. The line blew out. All of my lines are rusted badly. If you look on the net there are hundreds of posts related to this. Why is this not a recall? this could have been horrible as I was on my way to haul out my 5,000 pound boat! GM needs to address this or at least get word out they used cheap lines and people can easily be killed! jim stacy

Was notified of the brakes, ABS inadvertent activation recall. Took the vehicle in and no issues were found relating to the recall. Several months later the exact symptom described by the recall was happening. Took the vehicle in again and was told that I would have to pay for the repair even though the recall was clearly the cause. The ABS activates under 8 mph and when crawling very slowly in heavy traffic. Pedal goes to the floor. I removed the ABS fuse to avoid low speed crash. Has not been repaired to date.

Vehicle was involved in recall for front ABS wheel speed sensors, recall was allegedly performed 6/21/05. While pulling into a parking spot applied brakes while turning in, ABS engaged at a low speed, approx. 2 mph, and vehicle would not stop, collided with two concrete posts that were protecting the gas meter for the building damaging the front bumper and impact strip. I do not believe that the recall was ever performed. Vehicle is a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado extended cab 4X4.

ABS brakes engage at slow speeds (under 10mph) while coming to a stop. While applying the brake the ABS activates and the vehicle lunges forward a few feet until the normal braking activates. This exact complaint was addressed by Chevrolet on safety recall bulletin 05058C and this repair was completed on this vehicle back in 2005. The design of the hub allows the reluctor wheel to rust which in turn doesn't allow the speed sensor to achieve a correct reading and has created the exact same issue as addressed in the original safety recall.

On my way home from work at about 11:30 am on Tuesday July 28, 2009, I stopped at a light. The truck came to a complete stop and suddenly I felt the ABS kick in. The truck went forward, without my taking my foot off of the brake, into the intersection. It finally came to a stop in the middle of the intersection. A car had to serve to avoid hitting me. I called the dealership and they said there are no recalls on my 2002 Chevy Silverado truck. There was one on the 1999 Silverado for ABS failure.

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The dealer cleaned the speed sensor, but did not replace any parts. The failure has recurred and the brakes stick when attempting to stop the vehicle at low speeds. On the fourth trip to the dealer, the contact was informed that no failures could be found. She is unsure if the dealer will replace or clean the sensor, but she requested that it be replaced. In addition, the intermediate steering shaft was replaced with a re-manufactured part in July of 2005 at 18,031 miles. In November of 2006, at 29,650 miles, the steering shaft was lubed. In April of 2008, at 43,194 miles, the steering shaft was replaced a second time. Currently, at 56,000 miles, the vehicle is still experiencing issues. The dealer must check and replace the shaft failures every 25,000 miles. Lastly, the rear brake rotors were resurfaced four times and all of the window regulators have to be replaced. The vehicle is currently at the dealer to have all of the issues repaired. The failure mileage was 18,031. Updated 07/02/09.

I currently own a 2002 Silverado 1500 Z71 with 22,300 miles. Today while driving it I noticed that the brakes were a little softer then normal and not stopping the truck very well. Shortly after that while coming to a stop I pressed the brakes harder and they went to the floor and I had very little to no stopping. I had to use the E-brake to stop the truck and get it off the road. It seems that the brake lines from the master cylinder to the ABS box rusted out. This truck is not a daily driver and rarely will see a road when there is salt on it. With this few of miles I don't think this should happen due to the fact that I was lucky and could have been in a bad accident. I have also found out that this has happened on a lot of other Silverado/Sierra. Currently the lines are still broken and have yet to be replaced but will need to be.

However, his VIN was not included in the recall. The manufacturer stated that they could not assist with the repairs; therefore, the contact would have to pay over $500 to have the vehicle repaired. The NHTSA campaign id number was unknown. The failure and current mileages were less than 66,800.
