problem #10

Silverado 2500 4WD 8-cyl

  • 210,000 miles
The spare tire hoist cable broke, and the spare tire dropped onto the highway. It bounced at least 10 feet in the air, narrowly missing cars driving the opposite direction. Luckily it rolled to the shoulder without hitting anything. I had never used the spare, nor lowered the hoist mechanism. This tire weighs ~75 pounds and could have easily killed a passing motorist.

I was driving into the driveway at home and noticed a noise behind Chevrolet 2000G high top conversion van. I didn't see anything initially from the rear view mirrors. I later discovered the spare tire was lying in the street. The steel cable that held it up at the bottom of the van broke completely. I was lucky it happened in our driveway. If we were going down an interstate it could cause a serious accident if someone were following me very close. I wonder if anyone else have reported this incident. There appeared to be no other mechanism attached to keep the spare tire from falling off. I now have a new one on order. If the safety department was interested I would ask the dealer to keep that steel cable that broke.

When trying to change the spare you must insert a rod and turn to bring the spare down. The rod fails to connect properly as a result you are unable to lower the spare. When roadside assistance was contacted they said there were many instances just like ours. The dealership explained that the spare was tightened too much causing the shaft(which passes directly over the tire) to bend. My husband, daniel R. noriz, has a 2000chevy Silverado Z71. His VIN # is 2gcek19T6Y329756. His truck had the same problem. We have stopped to help a 2000gmc Sierra owner bring his spare down as well. He was not aware of this problem and was having trouble bringing his spare down. My sister-in-law has a 2000 GMC Sierra with the same problem.
