Town & Country Touring-L 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 63,000 miles

Like indicated on other complaints for this vehicle, the Blind Spot Detection Module has failed (around 50-55K miles) and disabled the Blind Spot Detection System and the Park Sense Rear Park Assistance System which is a $2000+ repair. The Rearview Back Up Camera System currently shorts out the small fuse because of the problem with the Blind Spot Detection system module being defective. A $1 fuse is the solution but I must pay $2000+ to repair another defective system to be able to use the $1.

All three of the above listed affected systems are listed on the window sticker as SAFETY FEATURES a few items above 4 lines listing the various airbags for the vehicle. We were sold on the SAFETY FEATURES which no longer work.

I have talked on several occasions with the dealer service department on these issues and they have admitted these are not uncommon problems. After some complaining, they indicated Chrysler would not recall the defective module but then indicated since it is a common problem, Chrysler is fixing the problem for about $500. I then asked the dealer service rep if this assures the problem is fixed and won't recur and he indicated he had no idea of the success with the replacement part. I have now learned more about the part and that it is poorly designed and water/moisture can get into the module and short it out.

On a phone call with Chrysler's customer support, the rep indicated it is not a manufacturing issues because those problems occur while under warranty. I asked if it was not poor design or manufacture defect, how can it fail? When stumped, I asked the rep if this "safety feature" was considered a consumable or wear rated component such as tires or brakes and he indicated "no" but when pressed then how it can fail, he backtracked and was willing to suggest it's due to overuse. I asked specifically if at approximately 60,000 miles had I had more than the usual amount of items come into my blind spots or back up more than the typical driver which led to the over use of the detection systems and he actually suggested it may be.

This feature is listed under the Functional/Safety Features of the vehicle along with a few other items which are not working which I'm told are also as a result of this problem (Blind Spot Detection System and Park Sense Rear Park Assist). In the same list of Functional/Safety Features are 4 different types (locations) of Airbags. I asked the Chrysler Rep if he would have the same attitude toward the various airbags on the system should they not deploy after 4-5-7 years, would Chrysler and the Government have the attitude that it's not their problem. Like the module having the problem, the airbags are not something I can touch, inspect, over use, etc. The NHTSA demands they not only be present but that they work. This is a similar safety feature. Should I merge into an occupied land and have an accident, even kill someone, I believe this faulty part should have some of the blame. THEY SOLD IT AS A SAFETY FEATURE!

By the way, when I was told by the Chrysler Rep that there is nothing they are willing to do with for consumers - never in any circumstance, I challenged him and he did admit there are circumstances where they evaluate loyalty and may help out a customer. I have a 2008 Chrysler 300 and have had other Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge products over the years and told him I was surprised that assistance with replacing a FAILED or DEFECTIVE SAFETY FEATURE depended on how much I have, and may, spend on Chrysler products. He indicated that how much we spend did not matter, suggesting that loyalty is not measured or equated with past and future purchases. Apparently I have not been "loyal enough"

I will post separate incident reports for the other affected systems and features as well.

I thought this was an isolated incident but after seeing the multitude of complaints I realized I am not alone. The car is currently sitting at the dealer and I am waiting for the call to tell me how much it costs to get fixed.

Thankfully I have the MOPAR warranty so this should be covered.

Chrysler needs to issue a recall for this as it is a safety issue.

Update from May 20, 2019: I am up to 106k miles and the problem has not re-occurred. Having the lifetime MOPAR warranty has been a godsend to owning this vehicle.

Chrysler corporation would not provide any assistance to fix this problem. There explanation was that it was not under warranty any longer. The service person at the dealership said that it is not supposed to go out ever because it is considered a safety feature. I was very upset because this was my second Chrysler Town and Country and had not had any problems up until now. The driver assist system is now out and I no longer have a back up camera.

Given the fact that this system is probably as expensive to fix as the blind spot monitoring system, I will NOT be paying exorbitant repair bills for things that are NOT supposed to go out. The service person said that the cost to repair the blind spot system is $2100.00. I can only imagine how much it will cost to fix the driver assist system that is connected to my now defunct backup cameras. I will be finished paying for my Lemon next year and I will not be buying a Chrysler product again.

I believe ever since the merger with Fiat, their customer service has gone down the tubes! I will ask the service person to give me a quote for my driver assist system/back up camera, but I am probably going to let it go and just trade my lemon in for something more reliable at some point. Consumer Reports was right in regards to the potential problems with the Chrysler Town and Country. They don't know however that when you call the corporation about a legitimate issue, they will use the 'out of warranty' explanation so as not to provide any assistance. My car is a 2012, I understand about some parts not being covered after the warranty has expired, but give me a break. The so called safety features should not be breaking down after four years! The Nissan I had years ago did not have any where near the problems!

There needs to be a recall on this. It is dangerous and irritating. The lights on the mirrors remain on and the 'dinging' noise is constant and very distracting - could cause an accident! There are a lot of complaints from people. This seems to occur after 40,000 miles and is a definite defect - along with the side mirror light covers falling off. This seems to have been an issue since at least 2008 (I read complaints) and Chrysler has yet to fix it. That is ridiculous and Chrysler needs to stand behind their product (not hide) and fix these defective items.

Following a downpour leaving a lot of surface water the blind spot system went haywire and continually flashed both warning triangle and beeped. I switched the system off via the user menu on screen and that also switched off the rear parking sensors and the rear facing camera.

The warning service blind spot system comes up as a warning and I now cannot switch this or the parking warning and camera back on.

My local dealer in the UK states that " the worst case scenario is £3000" Yes pounds Sterling NOT Dollars!

Not happy on a 3 year old car with only 35,000 miles.

Chrysler UK have said pay for a full diagnostics and then they may look at my request for a "good will" offer of assistance.

"No never heard of that as a problem" is the current position.

Blindside detection went out at 56 K. dealer told me it would be 2 K to fix. I told him to get bent. It's a major distraction with the warning system going off every 5 seconds. The blind spot detection is a nice option which you become accustomed to. When the chime won't stop ringing and you get a message saying it's not operating, well you take it in. At first the dealer quoted $500 to fix a connector in the rear bumper. Later when we authorized the repair, they said it's now $1,200 because after further diagnosed there is more to the problem. We told them to turn it off because we have driven for years without it. I see that this is the # 2 problem reported for Chrysler and it seems to be mainly in the 2012 model year.

We have always been a Chrysler family, but I guess it's time to look else ware for a mini van or SUV. $500 for the fix is reasonable, but apparently there are known problems that changed the quote in a matter of 30 min. Thanks for the memories Chrysler. It looks like it's time for me to change brands.

We had one sensor replaced under warranty last year. Then this February the blind spot detection system started to come on and off randomly while driving. Eventually the system became stuck in the on mode all the time. This time we were told both sensors are out and need to be replaced. The cost would be $2200.

I asked if the one replaced last year was defective, and was told often when one goes out the other sensor also shorts out too. I also asked if this was a problem they were seeing a lot and they only said they have seen it before. The system is susceptible to water and dirt damage in the rear bumper where the sensors are located. This is a design flaw and probably could be avoided with better protection for the wiring and sensors for a few dollars. I would assume that the cost to manufacture the sensor and house it properly should be much less expensive than the replacement estimate.

The dealer agreed it was an expensive repair and told me the detection system was not needed to drive the vehicle. I think the system should work. I paid for the safety features when buying the van. The dealer agreed to disconnect the system so the lights and tones do not stay on when driving. The dealer did not charge for the diagnostics time or for disconnecting of the system.

I will probably not buy a Chrysler in the future, based on this and previous quality issues on our Dodge van.

Marysville, OH Dealership claimed it was passenger mirror that I had cracked over a year ago, therefore not covered under warranty and cost me $430. However this did not work and they claimed I wouldn't owe them for the mirror, but after a second visit they corrected the problem and said they put another new passenger mirror and now it works so I still owe them for a mirror. The blind spot detection system went out on my Town and Country a few days ago. Now every time I get in my van, which I spend A LOT of time in, I hear this constant irritating pinging. It is EXTREMELY distracting and VERY dangerous.

I have called dealerships and have been told this is a fairly common and very expensive problem to have fixed. I do NOT have the $2,400.00 it may cost to have it fixed yet I can't stand the thought to driving with that constant annoying pinging either. I asked if they could just turn the system off and they say no, as its a safety issue. This constant beeping is MUCH more dangerous than not having the blind spot system at all! I am very upset with Chrysler.

This should be a recall! I do not think I will ever buy another Chrysler again and I am definitely telling everyone I know of this problem I am having.

The blind spot detection system went out at about 62,000 miles after owning it for only a year. It costs $120 to have it even looked at by the dealer. After that, the extended warranty company stated that they will determine if they will cover the cost of the repair based on the assessment of the dealership. If they determine that they will not pay for the cost it could cost me upwards of $2000 to repair.

It is not worth purchasing this vehicle because the blind spot detection system will literally drive you insane. The orange triangles remain lit on the side mirrors the entire time, while the car continuously beeps at you that the "blind spot detection system is unavailable", or "have blind spot detection system serviced".

Message on EVIC says "Service Blind Spot System" Indicator triangles on both mirrors are lit.

I used System Settings on EVIC to turn system off so that lighted triangles are not distracting at night.

Took to dealer and although mileage is only 29,371, vehicle is 3 months out of warranty. Fortunately I purchased the Maximum Care 60/60,000 service contract with the vehicle so the entire repair was covered. I was told that it was a $2,100 repair which seems consistent with what others have reported.

The fact that this has failed with less than 30,000 miles seems to be a real problem with the way that the system is mounted in the vehicle without sufficient protection from the elements. We get a lot of snow in Upstate NY, and use a lot of salt on the roads. I am concerned that this will fail again at the 60,000 mile point and will not be covered at that point.

I have a 2012 Town and Country van (78,000 miles) with the blind spot monitoring system. I loved it. You heard me. LOVED it. Yesterday, it started beeping constantly, driving me crazy. I took it to the dealer to find out what the deal is, and the service manager said he would have to replace the sensors for about $1500 each. WHAT???

How can this be? It only has 78000 miles on it, which in today's world, is nothing. My Toyota has over 200,000 on it with nothing like this and it has all the bells and whistles.

It's not covered under any kind of warranty and the manager said he can't disconnect it. Am I stuck with this mind-numbing beeping or do I have to go into hock to pay for the repairs?

If I have to sink that much into it, I will NEVER, NEVER buy another Chrysler product (and I LOVE my van with all my grandkids to haul around) and I will make sure all my friends know about how Chrysler takes care of their customers -- and I have a lot of friends and family.

This is my third Chrysler van and I am so disappointed. Chrysler should do something about this problem, since I see others have been stuck with the same.

I just recently purchased the van used "As Is" just over a week ago. Test drove the van with no indication of a problem. Now it just came on initially then corrected itself (started working properly). It started the constant beep indicating system disable. Now the indicator indicator remain on without beeping. I really like this safety feature and now it's not working at all. Disappointed with this revelation. The saving grace hopefully for me is the extended repair warranty purchased from the credit union as an option with the loan. This needs to be a recall on this safety feature. If it were the seat belt or airbag etc. which had a malfunction would there not be a recall for such a failure?

Blind spot indicator lights came on and stayed on. When I purchased the vehicle I paid for the added care plus vehicle protection for $1800. I was skeptical about buying this but was assured by my salesman that this would cover any future electrical problems that I might have. Because the car has sliding doors and a rear view camera I went ahead and bought this plan. I specifically mentioned to the salesman that these items in particular sealed the deal. His exact words to my wife and I were "You,l never have to worry". Now they tell me it will cost $2000 to fix it and because it is a remote system, it isn't covered by the warranty I was convinced to buy.

Chrysler corporate assigned me a case manager to handle my complaint as I too was worried about the safety aspect of these lights being on and blinding me at night. They now want me to bring it back for more diagnosing and I have an appointment scheduled. After reading the 5 page added plus contract, I now see that remote systems and latches are not covered. Also there can be a deductible applied to any of the work that they do [ $200, $150, $100, $50,or $0] Of course none of this was discussed at purchase, only how fortunate I was to be worry free of any electrical, expanded electrical, instrumentation, etc. etc. For Chrysler to put me back on the road with this problem shows total disregard for my safety.

After seeing that others are having the same problem I am seeing that a possible recall is going to be needed for this safety item that malfunctions. I will keep you posted on what my re-diagnoses discovers.
