The first time my engine just died while driving. I left the house on a Saturday late morning on my way to a Wedding Shower.. BAM..Luckily I was on a two lane countryish road so no real threat to my life right now but I think "Thank God it happened here" what could it be? That's odd.. hasn't happened before. No flashy lights, no voices came from far beyond..nothing.

I pushed the button a few times nothing.. again..started up. OK..do I go to the shower or do I turn around? Hell I'm going to the shower. As I took off down the road I said a little prayer that is was just something funky and won't happen again. I baby my car, I get oil changes timely or close to timely as I drive 100 miles a day to and from work. Still pondering.. it couldn't be the gas.. I pay extra for the good stuff.. even though people have told me I'm wasting my money I always use premium fuel.

OK..I've worked this issue out in my head and decided..just for the heck of it I'm going to pull in and get an oil change I am a bit late but not too bad. The guy told me I HAD NO OIL in my car!!!!!!!! I said WHAT? I have to have oil.. if I don't where did it go??? There are no puddles in my garage.. there is no smoke from burning oil as I drive..the car isn't that old.. WTF??? Then I told the guy what happened earlier and he said..and I quote.." Oh yeah, you have a Dart, that happens often people come in here with no oil". Oh, wow.. I'm gonna have to check this out in between my busy life going on and definitely watch my oil in the meantime.

The second time this happened was a week ago.. I WAS ENTERING AN EXPRESS WAY ON THE RAMP!! BAM.. oh, no, oh, no, oh, no..H O N K..H O N K...oh no..oh no..won't start...H O N K.. push button starts up!! Oh thank God.. I'm not dead or beaten up...

I went immediately to my same oil change guy.. not much oil in my car..WTF??? That's why I'm here.. looking at the issues with the Dodge Dart.. so when I go into the dealership with my car I am ARMED with information and ready to create a thunderstorm!! Will keep you posted on the RUNAROUND I'm sure I will get.. I've printed off all of your complaints and I'm taking them with me. C J

Dart SXT 2.4L Ltr

  • Automatic transmission
  • 49,215 miles

I purchased 2014 Dodge Dart SXT 2.4 ltr in Feb 2014. I have had several problems with the car since then. The first time was at 564 or so miles then the car stalling and the radio touch screen coming off and on and resetting. After they did an update on transmission the car does not shift right. The car broke down in Sept of 2015 and then again in Dec 2015 both times the car was towed in. The first time I was told they could not find anything wrong with the car until the next day when the car stalled on them when they took it for a test drive. They had the car for five days and found the car needed a cam shaft sensor.. (Paper work says map sensor) the car was repaired, so they say. Three months later the car broke down again in December on my way to work. The car has and still is stalling off and on but would restart In between tow ins. Same thing as last time they could not find anything wrong with the car until the next day. The car was 2 qts low of oil. They had the car for two days this time, they changed the oil and told me that we are starting an oil consumption test and I needed to bring the car back in 1000 miles, I did and I was told that it is half qt low, ( later I received paperwork saying oil in safe zone) they marked the oil stick with a blue line ( half qt low) they added more to fill and told me to bring it back in another 1000 miles, I did and this time the service manager himself did the test and found that the car was 11/2 qts low, he add more oil and told me to bring it in one more time and if it is low again they would keep the car and start tearing into the motor. I returned 1000 miles later asked for the service manager Rob, he was not there so they took the car back to the garage and I waited, the service worker told me i was 11/2 qts low again. I was told they added more oil and I would be getting a call from the service manager in a day or 2. At that point he handed me an invoice Stating I was indeed 11/2 qts low, I asked the man about the other 2 invoices and he told me he had no idea. This was the first invoice I have received for oil concumpttion test. I Never got a call so I called to speak to Rob the service manager. No answer and no return call. I am told by the dealer Royal Gate) that is is normal for this car to burn a qt of oil every 750 miles if over 50,000 miles, when all this started I was under 50,000 miles and I was told there is nothing to fix. Later I found out that Rob the service manager was let go. At this point the GM Mike K took over and told me we had to start the process all over again due to they only had invoices for the first and third oil consumption tests. I then brought it in again for another oil change to start the new oil consumption testing and to mark new blue line to show how full the oil level was. I spoke to the mechanic that day he explained that he put 5.5 qts of oil in due to new oil filter and he showed me that the oil reached the top of the blue line. Paperwork says they put in 5 qts oil. I was to bring it back 1000 miles later. I did that with the result being 1/2 qt low. I was told again that is normal and nothing to fix. I threw a big fit I explained that the mechanic told me he put 5.5 qts of oil in my car. Later when they spoke to the mechanic they told me that the mechanic told them when he showed me the oil level I told him to add more. That did NOT HAPPEN. I am not the mechanic here. How could I tell him to add more? I was told a few times maybe I should go to a different dealer to start the process all over. They ordered a radio about a month or more ago and have it there at the shop for weeks but have not informed me on when they would put it in or if they even would. When I bought the car I did not expect to have to put oil in the car every 750/1000 miles. Later after all of this I sat down and looked at my owners manual ( they tell us to go by that). I find out that my car is suppose to take 5.5 qts of oil to begin with. All along they have been putting in 5 Qts of oil. With that said the car is still burning oil but with all the mess ups who really knows how much it does really burn. Car is still stalling and shifting weird. Dealer acts as if this is an isolated problem and driver error but it seems from reading on this site it is not an isolated problem. There is also a recall on the car and it has been out for sever months now with no parts aval per dealer. (Royal Gate) I cant believe I am stuck with a car with an oil burning problem and it is claimed to be normal for this car.

The dealer could not find an oil leak. Either the car is burning oil or the correct amount of oil wasn't added the last time I had an oil change. The dealer wants me to bring my car back after I drive it 500 miles so they can check it over.

Update from May 20, 2016: My 2014 Dodge Dart with the 2.4 engine died and wouldn't start. Had to be towed to the dealer. The car was 4 quarts low on oil.No oil leak was found.

Update from Oct 15, 2016: My 2014 Dart with 27000 miles is burning oil at a rate of 1 quart every 2000 miles. The dealer printed a copy of a service bulletin with the subject of Oil Consumption Guide. It states that the accepted rate of oil consumption is 1 quart in 2000 miles. I find that hard to believe that their isn't something wrong with my Dart. I have never had oil consumption issues with any other 9 new cars that I have bought. I'm frustrated and angry.

The first time the engine stalled I was taking my daughter to school. While approaching a stop sign the engine stalled. I lost the ability to steer. I thought it was just a fluke. That was May 6th. The second time was May 10th. I was on my way to work that morning and as I was on the on ran for the expressway the engine stalled. Luckily, I was toward the right of the ramp and other cars were able to get by. I was able to restart the car and continued to drive to work. Once there I went online to see if there have been any recalls. None were found.

I called Dodge and they confirmed there was no recalls. I searched into engine stalls for the make and model and came upon this site. It is unfortunate that there are others out there experiencing the same issue. And I agree, that driving this car can be dangerous. But what is a person to do when they rely heavily on a car to get to work. I have no disposable income to just be able to walk away from this car. I called the dealer to set up an appointment and got on for Thursday afternoon (May 12th). That same morning while on my way to work the engine stalled AGAIN. All three events it was the same, engine stalls, dash lights and radio still on. On one occasion, I could not get the car in gear to put on park.

After leaving the car at the dealer. I got a call from the service department and the diagnosis, they suggested I have "Decarbonization service to vehicle". They decarbonized the combustion chamber and upper intake to vehicle. They also suggested an oil change. As luck would have it thanks to the other complaints on this site, prior to dropping the car of for service I checked the oil gauge and I was at a 58%. I had them change it anyway. This way if the engine stalls again they can't throw, "needs an oil change" at me. Another customer on the site said the service department said it was an oil issue. Don't know if that worked for them. But anyway I digress.

After looking at the service receipt, under 'Customer states engine stalls W/slowing to stop. Happen 3xs.' NO TROUBLE FOUND. Yeah?!

As a side note I purchased this car new. I got all the safety equipment technology available. My intentions were to break it in and give it to my son. I didn't want to buy a used car not knowing the true history of car for him. This car I bought is kept well with all scheduled maintenance done and driven as if a nun was behind the wheel.

May 2, Monday morning on my way to work, I stopped at a stop sign and the car stalls and dies two blocks from my house. I waited for some time and after several tries, it finally starts back up. This has happened several times, usually after the first start of the day and always only after driving for a couple of minutes. I've tried letting it warm it up for five minutes in the driveway before I take off, but it still does it. I bought it brand new so its barely 2 years old with 32,000 miles on it! I've taken it to a Dodge dealer and they said they could not duplicate it. I'm going to keep taking it until it gets fixed or they can buy it back. I hope someone figures it out or Dodge is gonna have a fatality or a lawsuit.

Update from May 9, 2016: Took my car to the dealer to have it checked out. First they told me that the oil pressure was low and that I needed to change the oil every 4,000 miles. I said I really don't pay attention to the mileage, but I check the oil display sensor frequently and it only showed 42% usage. A couple of days later, they came back and said Dodge has a case for it and that they need to replace the whole engine.

WHILE DRIVING MY 2014 DODGE DART 2.4l TIGERSHARK ENGINE, THE VEHICLE SHUT OFF. THE BATTERY INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON WITH ALL THE ELECTRONICS INSIDE THE CAR STILL OPERATIVE. I HAD TO CALL A WRECKER TO TAKE THE CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP.

A DIAGNOSTIC TEST SHOWED LOST COMMUNICATION WITH CONTROL MODULE. LOOKED AT OIL AND IT WAS LOW OIL. ASKED WHY DIDN'T THE OIL INDICATOR LIGHT COME ON. THE TECHNICIAN DIDN'T KNOW WHY NOT. I WAS TOLD BY AUTO TECHNICIAN THAT THE AUTO SHUTS ITSELF OFF WHEN ITS LOW OIL. THIS IS VERY ALARMING SITUATION IF IT WOULD SHUT OFF WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY IN TRAFFIC. I CALLED CHRYSLER AND REPORTED THIS. THE CALL CENTER STATED SHE HAD 2 PEOPLE THE DAY BEFORE AND 3 ON THE DAY I CALLED WITH EXACT PROBLEM. SHE STATED ALL THE CARS HAD OVER 20,000 MILES ON THEM.

THE DEALERSHIP CHANGED THE OIL. NOT EVEN 1 WEEK LATER BACK TO GET COMPUTER UPDATE AND FOR THEM TO ADD OIL. THE SERVICE MANGER AL B. SAID THAT THEY WOULD ADD OIL WHENEVER I NEED IT. BUT THAT'S ONLY BECAUSE OF MY ONLINE REVIEW OF THE INCIDENT OF THE TOW IN. IN WHICH HE CALLED ME HIS FIRST DAY BACK FROM HIS VACATION.

ON TOP OF EVERYTHING WHEN THE TECH PULLED MY CAR OUT THEY SCRAPED THE FRONT UNDERNEATH BUMPER ON THE CONCRETE STOP. HE STATED THEY WOULD FIX IT AT NO CHARGE. WENT TO PICK IT UP, CHECKED IT BEFORE I LEFT. FOUND OVER SPRAY. BOTH SERVICE & BODY SHOP MANGERS PRESENT AGREED TO REPAINT IT AGAIN. TO ADD TO EVERYTHING, TOOK IT OFF THE LIFT, BACK OUT AND SCRAPED IT AGAIN. SO I'M IN ANOTHER LOANER...WE'LL SEE.

I WILL UPDATE LATER ...

It still continuously stalls, especially putting it into reverse shortly after starting it, or into drive. Has died at a red light also. The rpms also drop below 1 and car acts like it wants to die, it cuts out a bit. Dealers don't do much, I have taken it in several times and since it's not under warranty anymore because of mileage now they want to charge me for everything. I'm unable to afford the big costs so I guess they don't get fixed yet the issues are not my fault!

This is the 5th time that this car has shut off while I'm driving it. Luckily I have been able to drive to the side of the road. The steering wheel locks up and I can barely turn the car. Twice it has shut off while getting onto the expressway. I was so scared I THOUGHT I was gonna have a heart attack. But I was able to turn the wheel and pull over. I had to collect my thoughts. Ive taken it to the shop 4 times. The first two times they said it had to duplicate the problem for the computer to read it so they can fix it. The 3rd time they said my oil was very low and the car just shut off.

A week after I got the oil changed the service department had me bringing it in to make sure I don't have an oil leak. The oil was fine. The next week the car quit 2 more times. It's in the shop now and have been for a week. This car is gonna cause me to have a serious accident. They can't find the problem but I know it's not normal for this car to be shutting off while I'm driving it. I only had it for a year and I have had all the oil changes and maintenance that it has called for. I have not enjoyed my car since my first 3000-3500 miles. I really want to leave it on the lot and just take lost on my credit. But I have 2 jobs and I'm in school. So I need my car. I've even called the dealer and they said to take it to another service department. I'm like, don't U all have the same equipment. They need to give me another car.

I WILL NEVER BY A DODGE AGAIN. I was gonna up grade to the 2015-16 Jeep Renegade. But I'll pass. I never even want to look at another Dodge Jeep Chrysler let alone drive one.

On two different occasions now my car has just shut off while driving. Steering wheel locks up, brakes lock up and everything. Today, the second time.......I was on my way to work at 4am.....beginning to make a right turn and wham! LOCKS UP! We called our local Chrysler, where we bought the car, and they towed it, for free, to their service department for us. We go to get it and were told that the car was low on oil......wasn't even reading on the dipstick. Supposedly this car is designed to "just shut off" when the oil is low. No idiot light, no dingy thing, nothing flashing.......NO WARNING AT ALL. This car only has a warning light if the oil pressure is low, not if the cars oil level is low. This is the MOST RIDICULOUS THING I HAVE EVER HEARD! Something needs to be done about this......PEOPLE WILL DIE! Where do I start? Thanks so much!

Sept. 18th Friday morning on my way to work, stop at a stop light and it dies and won't start. It gets towed to the dealer. They "fix" it and say it was just a loose connection to the battery. Really? Its barely 3 years old with 12000 miles on it! I take it home and drive it all weekend and go to start it Tuesday morning the 22nd and it won't start! Now I am seeing all these other Dart owners with the same problem and no one knows how to fix it! I hope someone figures it out quickly or Dodge is gonna have a fatality.

Update from Oct 9, 2015: it was showing 15% good oil life left when the problems started....the dealer said oil was a quart low and caused all the problems...supposedly...so now its been running ok after adding oil.

I always had toyota and honda before and they never burned oil like that

3rd time this car has been in the shop for car dying........... replaced oil pressure switch this time. Hope it works!! Dealership makes me feel guilty for asking for a loaner REALLY? Sell me a $26,000 car that doesn't run right for more than 3 months at a time and it bothers you to give me a loaner when it's not running?

Update from Jun 9, 2015: Now I am taking this car in for the 4th time for the same problem and they finally agree to put a new engine in the thing. NO OIL in the car! I have paid this dealership $85 for an oil change every 4000 miles and they didn't notice it was burning oil? REALLY? I hope this fixes the problem.

Update from Oct 18, 2016: dealership ended up REPLACING the ENGINE!! After all the crap we went through they finally decided that was best. Then..... about 6 months later it had a TRANSMISSION PROBLEM. Now we have to pay for an UPDATE because the car is no longer under warranty! REALLY? Paying a hundred dollars for an update may be nothing to you - but I would expect a 2 year old car to be under warranty for updates! ARE these things planned so that "updates" can continue to suck money out of the customer?? THEN 6 months after that- lo and behold! The brand new battery lasted a whole 2.5 years and 40000 miles! NOW the car sits- dead again until we pay 157.00 to replace the battery. DO NOT buy this car unless you plan on replacing things right and left.
