Durango Citadel 3.2L V6

  • 50,000 miles

My car continues to have issues starting. It tries to turn over but takes about 15 minutes in order to do so. Today it went to the stand by mode but did not start. Worst part is I could not get it to shut off. I finally put it in neutral and it ended up shutting down then starting up. It's 107 degrees out here today, sitting my car trying to get it to start is not acceptable.

When I got back to my office I went on-line to see what the problem is. Sadly I saw 100's of complaints and hear there is a class action law suit. I believe the suit is for 2013 so I am wondering if there has been any resolve? I have not received a recall notice for this issue but have for many other problems.

I need to find out more information on this so if your able to assist I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you,

Jason

My 2011 Dodge Durango will not start as of today. There have been hints of the problem over the past few weeks with hesitant starts and/or requiring 3-4 attempts to start the vehicle. I'm taking the vehicle to the dealer tomorrow (if I can get it started or towed there). Who knows how much they will bleed me for.

Vehicle would not start. Took to dealership. They had vehicle almost 3 weeks. Discovered I had a defective TIPM that can sometimes make it impossible to start your car. A defective TIPM can sometimes make it impossible to start your car. In addition, it can cause any of the following:

The fuel pump not turning off The airbags not deploying OR deploying randomly The engine stalling while driving The horn going off at random times In other words, having a vehicle with a faulty TIPM is like driving something possessed.

Instead of replacing the DEFECTIVE TIPM which should be RECALLED because of SO many of these vehicles having faulty TIPM, I guess CHRYSLER is waiting for hundreds of people to be hurt or killed because of this DEFECT which should be RECALLED and repaired correctly instead of just installing a CHEAP FIX....RELAY SWITCH!!!!

I just bought this vehicle used. I thought it would be a reliable and safe vehicle for my wife and three children. I am Active Duty Military and left for training only to have this vehicle leave my family stranded because it wouldn't start!! What a joke! Apparently the fuel pump doesn't receive the correct current it needs to start the vehicle, due to the well known faulty Tipm. " Imported from Detroit" is what they tell the American consumer. We were their for you when you needed us to buy your product. Now it seems you do not care about us or our safety. Do the right thing and recall this part, help out your loyal consumers.

We're new to this and what a nightmare this has been. We seem to be experiencing TIPM failure. Our 2011 Durango that we just purchased a few months ago has hesitated each morning to start. It's almost as if it were possessed. Hit the brake, push the button and it cranks, but “gets stuck” trying to start, and won't turn over. You hit the brake, button, etc it just keeps cycling until it shuts off. Had to repeat it five times and it started. Took it to dealership, they told us they hooked it up to computer, no codes, nothing visibly wrong. Told us they can't be a middle man, we have to call Chrysler dealership and take it to them to see what's wrong. They assume it's an electrical reprogramming issue, but mention how Chrysler has a TSB on their site. Shocking right?

Go to Chrysler’s site and boom, TIPM issue, class action suit, problems listed all matching ours. Currently waiting a week to get into local Chrysler dealer since all local ones are booked. Now without a car for at least a week. Commute over an hour to work and have two small kids. Do NOT feel safe driving this car with all we've read related to this issue. Called Chrysler corporate today bitching about wanting a rental for THEIR faulty item, hearing how part is back ordered 2-4 weeks, etc. Told there are parameters they can't discuss but our car doesn't fit those to have a rental. We said it's IN the class action suit, HOW IS THAT possible?? After three angry phones, then told a "case manager" would call us in 1-2 business days. Meanwhile we're up sh*t creek without a vehicle.

Our dealer will not provide us with a loaner since it's a Chrysler issue. We purchased extended warranty, Chrysler is saying it will not be covered. Here we sit and wait. Chrysler is a despicable company. How they can continue this after all of the issues, BIG SAFETY issues and NOT do a darn thing is beyond me. I read there have been 20 deaths reported, associated with this part. WHY NOT do a recall years ago when this started? They are doing NOTHING for their customers. We should NOT have to pay for this expensive repair!!!! I'm so frustrated right now. Just absolutely unreal.

Update from Sep 29, 2014: Par for the course from ALL I've read we're also on the Yellow Brick Bullsh&t Road. So got our car into a Chrysler dealer/garage. We were told our problem with our car not starting is "simply" becuase it needed an electrical update, that like our computers at home this is necessary with electronics. Well I don't drive my computer to work 50 miles at 65+mph with the risk of it just shutting off since, well oops, it needs an update! Ok fine. So they do the update, charge me $90 i dicker and get it to $72 fine. Pay. Get there to pick up our 2011 Dodge Duranog and lo and behold they can't get it started to drive around to me. Now we are being told it's the fuel pump switch. Our extended warranty will cover this, but IRONICALLY this was JUST recalled for this particular vehicle but for some unknow reason, Chrysler is telling us our particular car did not have this part...this is the words the moron use that I spoke to from Chrysler corporate. So the sage continues.

2011 Durango with the TIPM issue. Chrysler Dodge basically said I'm SOL and so did the local Dealership Mac Haik Georgetown. Parts on back order and will cost $1200. No help from either parties. How many customers have to be in accidents be for they take action? I get a recall for a vanity light wire that may short after a headliner repairs....really, what about the fact that my Durango may shut down without notice, loss all power and possibly crash, possibly injuring my family or some one else? I left Chevrolet for defects and poor customer relations and now I will leave Chrysler. American Tax Payers bail these guys out and this is how they treat the people how kept them from dissolving.

Noticed a vehicle starting problem approximately sometime in early 2014, it might have been earlier but I really started to pay attention in August. After placing my foot on the brake and pushing the start button, the starter would just crank the engine without it firing. I did notice the lightning bolt warning light (Electronic Throttle Control) illuminated at the center of the dash as the vehicle failed to start. I had to let off the brake and push the button once again to disengage the starter from turning the engine over. I then repeated the process to start the vehicle once again and the vehicle started right up and had no further problems & no more lightning bolt warning indicator. This issue happened several more times on and off over the months with the same outcome as described above until August 31, 2014.

On this date the vehicle would not start after attempting 3 or 4 times, also noting the lightning bolt warning light illuminated. I then placed the vehicle in neutral and it started and warning lights extinguished. This happened again the next day on September 1, 2014 and again had to start the vehicle in neutral. While driving the vehicle that day from Detroit Lakes, MN to Grand Forks, ND I noticed the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) light illuminate for about 10-15 minutes then went away for the remainder of the drive. I have noticed this light intermittently illuminate while driving before and after September 1st and didn't think much of it until the 1st.

The problem has become a recurring issue very fast. Today, September 9, 2014 with 34,441 miles on the odometer, while attempting to leave work, it took about 15 attempts to finally start the vehicle with the Electronic Throttle Control (Lightning Bolt) light steadily illuminated until the vehicle started. Once it started, I had the following warning lights remain illuminated: 1) Anti-Lock Brake System, 2) Electronic Stability Control, 3) Brake, and 4) both left & right mirror blind spot warning triangles were illuminated. In addition, while driving, the electronic speedometer continually read zero and didn't increase with speed. I drove to the store, maybe a half mile and turned the vehicle off and went inside for about 10 minutes. I returned to the vehicle and started it normally with no warning lights illuminated. I drove about another mile to my house without any issues.

I've been researching the above issues and have found numerous people with the same type of issues on the Durango & other Chrysler products and almost all have led to a faulty Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) with repair costs over $1,000. I'd say there is more than enough information for the NHTSA to investigate the issue and order a recall on this TIPM before someone is seriously injured or killed.

A few weeks ago I got my oil changed. 2 days later, the check engine light came on. Car started having problems starting. Was it cold weather? on a hill? battery needing to be replaced?. Took it into the dealership - coil problem in cylinder 2. It was covered even though past the 36k warranty because it was a known issue.

Got the Durango back yesterday. Problems starting again today. Taking several attempts to turn over, etc. Look it up and found this issue. Back to the dealership. Not covered by warranty or extended warranty. Dealership said they would have Chrysler pay 1/3, dealership paying 1/3, we are paying the rest.

Same problem... Bought this car as a certified pre-owned from Dodge Dealer. Two days after I get the car, it won't start!!! Took about 10 times to get it going. Thought it was a one time issue, then happened again to me twice today... Called the dealer, and of course they say it was coincidence this started happening the DAY I get it. BS!!! Now I have to take it to the dealer and pay for it to get fixed... Maybe they will help me? I am so disheartened. This is my first American made car in 10 years and I get burned. Guess America is not quite ready for prime time yet. I am SO disappointed in Dodge/Chrysler... Come on, step up to the plate and do what is right. They know this is a manufacturing defect. They already have designed external bypasses to fix it? Sounds like a known issue. How many people have to be injured or die before they stop covering this up. Hasn't anyone learned from the GM fiasco?

The car has continued to give us problems with starting for about 9 mos now. At first we didn't think it was a big deal as it would only happen occasionally. Then it even stopped happening for several months so we thought we were in the clear but now the problem is back and even worse. Instead of only periodically not wanting to start it's happening all the time to the point where 1 day I had to leave the car running in my garage all day so that I could have an available car to pick up my kids from school. We thought it was the battery so replaced it over $200 later only to find out that's not the problem. Now we've discovered that the extended warranty has already expired and the car will rarely start. We don't have the money to get it fixed but we desperately need this vehicle. We have 5 children attending 4 different schools and my husband is active duty Marine so he needs his vehicle for work. His vehicle only seats 5 total and I need at least a 6 passenger car when transporting my children. We are extremely frustrated with this situation since it really seems like this is a manufacturing problem. We need help!

Occasionally, my Durango wouldn't start about once a month since purchasing it. Yesterday, however, when I got my oil change and reset the oil change alert, it wouldn't start. I tried about 10 times before it would start. I got home and restarted it three times in the parking spot just to make sure. I got up this morning to go to church and it wouldn't start, tried multiple times. My husband also tried multiple times. This is horrible.

In researching this problem, I found that when you get the lightning bolt error light and it says that the key is not detected, this means it is either the ECT or TIMP and that many, many people are having the same issue. Dodge needs to do a recall on this vehicle and fix the problem. We have had Dodge vehicles for 20 years or more, but no more. The last several of our Dodge vans and this Durango have had issues that are very expensive. My husband says they are now made in China - figures.

About two weeks ago my Durango started this not starting business. I thought it was a fuel pump issue. No, not the pump. Over these last two weeks it has gotten harder and harder to start. It can take up to 20 minutes to get going. A couple of days ago it just died while I was pulling out of my driveway. I was so angry! I had my baby and eight year old son in the car with me and a car had to go around me to avoid hitting me as I was just stuck! It took about 5 minutes to get it started!

Please recall the TIPM, so I can get this fixed! I love my Durango, but this is ridiculous!

Took truck in cause it shut off and the engine light came, was told that the it needed an update. Two days later today, got ready to go grocery shopping, and truck won't start, had to get it towed to the dealer who said, ohh, it's the relay timing, which is apart of the TIPM, and it's not under warranty so you have to foot the bill.

So my family's main vehicle is at the dealer during Labor Day weekend, and work won't be started on it till Tuesday. If they knew about this TIPM, then they should recall it. Instead after you pay them an arm and leg for the vehicle to turn around after paying your car payment have to kick out triple that to get it fixed is outrageous. Ohh, and no rental car is included...

My Durango started stalling while driving and then became difficult to start until a week ago wouldn't start at all. I was told by at least 3 different people it was the fuel pump. It was towed to the garage 2 days ago and I was told today that it's the TIPM ..? They then proceed to tell me the part alone is $1086 plus the tow bill and labor so now it's up to $1400. He then proceeds to tell me that my Durango has 2 fuel pumps and this May have damaged these as well so that's an additional $600 with parts and labor. The troubling part to me is that the Dodge dealer is also informing me that he has replaced 2 others of this identical problem this week alone and Chrysler will not do anything about it. So I had few ?'s

I hit a deer a few months in a 55 mph zone, done $6200 in damage. The officer on scene and the collision repair shop wondered why my air bags didn't deploy. I assumed I was lucky? Evidently this is a defect due to module being defective. Luckily it was only a deer I hit and not another vehicle since my air bags won't deploy. Luckily I'm finding out how dangerous this can be after I've gotten it to the garage and myself or my 16 yr old daughter who drove this vehicle daily were hurt.

You're PATHETIC Chrysler for not issuing a recall over 2 years ago when you knew about this problem!!!
