Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 50,809 miles
Started car on a Saturday morning only with the same small tapping noise as from the last couple of days. No check engine light had come up until going down the freeway a very loud noise, lost of power and finally a check light came on. Exited freeway drove a couple of miles to a friends home to leave car. After calling the huntington beach Dodge service dept on Monday and providing oil change records. The extended warrinty service people have decline my claim to fix engine claiming that the oil change service dept at walmart started the engine without oil and cause engine faliure. I find this claim by the first extended service Corp to be wrong, since in my personnal experience and by viewing all the oil changes that have been taken care of by walmart, they have never started a cars engine without oil.

Engine began making a loud knocking noise. I took it to four different places and was told anything from a lifter problem to a new engine was needed due to sludge build-up and the timing chain tensioner. I have been in touch with Chrysler and they said they did not have a recall on the engine and could do nothing at this time. I have only had the vehicle for about three months. Oh!! this is a 2000 Dodge Intrepid with a 2.7L engine.

At my latest oil change, the guy doing the oil change said that there was some sludge in the oil. I had him flush the system as a part of the oil change. Now, just a month later, my wife tells me the Intrepid has started making a loud rattlling noise. I went to go check it out and couldn't get the car to start. I had the car towed to a service station and they told me that the engine is probably totalled and will need to be replaced. I haven't had it towed to the dealer yet as I really don't want to spend another $200 getting the car towed there and having a diagnostic to find out what I already know. Daimler Chrysler really needs to do right by their cars. I spoke with them and they said I'd have to provide proof that I've been having the oil changed every 3000 miles. Even then, they said I'd have to prove that the service station was reputable and used high quality oil. Basically they said I was screwed. Thanks Dodge.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission

While driving down the highway, the consumer's husband heard a clicking noise and then the vehicle cut off and would not restart. The consumer's husband had the vehicle towed to the mechanic, who determined that the engine failed. The consumer had to purchase a new engine for the vehicle. The mechanic suggested that the problem was with engine sludge build up due to the exhaust going through the engine because the catalytic converter was under the engine instead of under the vehicle.

2000 Dodge Intrepid this 2.7 engine has a major engineering flaw in the motor. Even though I have maintained oil changes there is still engine sludge in the motor which has disabled my motor and I cannot drive it anymore. The extended warranty refuses to pay for the repairs even though I had proof of oil changes. There are numerous people with the Dodge Intrepid's with the 2.7 engines who are experiencing the same problems yet the auto maker refuses to see there is a problem. My check engine light has never come on and had the ticking noise in the engine not become so obvious in the last week or so before taking it in to the shop, I would have probably at some point locked the motor up not knowing there was an engine problem causing problems for myself as well possibly other people on the highway. This car had a slight ticking in the engine when I purchased it but was told it was normal engine noise. When I bought the car it had a little over 31,000 miles on it and have only had it two years this past Jan.(04) and it has a little over 58,000 miles now and now the motor is shot I still owe over 11,000 on the car and they are quoting me a price of 4,800 and some odd dollars to fix it. This is a problem that needs to be addressed and a recall needs to be done on these 2.7 engines. After researching the net. I have discovered that numerous people have this problem and are done the same way I have been done. Chrysler needs to stand behind their work and acknowledge there is a problem with the 2.7 engines instead of giving customers like myself who have maintained oil changes grief.

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 59,500 miles
I recently bought a 2000 Dodge Intrepid in February 2003 with 37,000 miles on it. I started to notice that the steering had a lot of play in it and pulled to the right. I took it in to a Chrysler dealership to check why it is doing this. They checked it and told me that it just needed to have an alignment done. So I went ahead and had an alignment done. The more I drove the car the worse the steering became. It got to the point where I couldn't control the car. I called the dealership and told them about this. They told me to bring the car in asap and not to drive it anywhere else. I had a friend follow me to the dealership (thank goodness it is not far from my house) where they told me they would check it out and give me a call back. They called me and told me that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced and it would cost an estimate of $1300. I just bought the car and I would already have to pay over a thousand dollars to have it fixed. To make a long story short, I complained to the DaimlerChrysler Corp. And they paid for half of the cost because I told them that I knew that this car has had a lot of problems with the rack and pinion. Well, it's now March 2004 and my engine as well as my timing chain has went out. The dealership says that there is a build-up of sludge in the engine and it is going to cost me over $7700 dolars to fix. I am now finding out that this is also a serious problem with these engines (2.7 liter). I am finding that this engine is in such demand that it is even on back-order at most shops. I would like theses cars to be recalled because these are some serious issues that we are dealing with. If the whole car can't be recalled, I would like something to be done that can help us consumers get through these problems. My car is still sitting at the dealership because there is no way I can come up with $7700 dollars to fix it. I have also missed work because I have no way of getting there. Something needs to be done to DaimlerChrysler!

Intrepid 6-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 77,000 miles
2 yrs. Ago I had bought a 2000 Dodge Intrepid, now the engine is about to blow, there is a loud knocking noise, sometimes the car gets hot and shuts down, check engine light goes on all of the time, oil changes are done regularly with synthetic oil. Engine sounds very rough and idles very high. Started doing this at about 75,000 miles - just in time for my warranty to be up. I have seen a lot of complaints on line about the same thing. I tried to trade it in, no one wants it because they say the engine is about to blow and I still owe too much, way more than they say it is worth. I can't afford to buy a whole new engine. This is my only form of transportation. Please help.
