Journey SXT 3.6L

This car was purchased used in 2015. It was a previous daily rental vehicle. (Never buy a previous daily rental unless you get a great deal and have it inspected by a good mechanic before you sign the paperwork.) The Dodge Journey drove good and was very comfortable and I really liked it. I knew there where some reliability complaints with Fiat-Chrysler vehicles, but I got a good deal and I bought it.

On December 18, 2018, the overheating warning came on. I took it to the dealer, Redlands CJDR, in Redlands, California to get it fixed. While it was in the shop, the service department found that not only was the cooling fan broken, but all the motor mounts needed replacing, the engine and vehicle computer was bad and needed replacement, the strut towers needed replacement and the power lumbar seat needed repair.

I had an extended warranty and the bill still came to $1900.00. (This was for the deductible and for a rental vehicle through the dealership at a low price discount.) If I did not have the extra warranty, it would have been around $4000.00 to fix.

My advice to anyone buying a Dodge Journey is make sure you get an extended warranty when you buy or lease one of these SUV’s otherwise you could end up spending lots of money on repairs.

(I did not buy the car from Redlands CDJR. I purchased it from Fontana Nissan. Both dealerships are great and this is not a complaint about them. Redlands CDJR really worked with the extended warranty company to get a lower price and they gave me a giant discount on the rental car. I recommend Redlands CDJR for your next car purchase or repair. Just make sure you know about the reliability of some of FCA’s vehicles and buy an extended warranty!!!)

My final thoughts on the Dodge Journey. It is a very smooth and versatile SUV. It has great storage and drives and handles well. It’s too bad that FCA can’t make a vehicle that is somewhat reliable, because the Journey would be a great SUV if it didn’t have so many problems.
