Nitro 3.7L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 151,800 miles

I purchased my pre-owned 2008 Dodge Nitro 2 months ago. A week ago it all went haywire like my car was possessed. It also happened the following week. I have a hard time believing that this was the first time these issues have happened. I think the people I purchased the vehicle from chose not to disclose these problems.

-- While using the key fob to lock/unlock the car the horn starts blaring, the wipers (front and rear) start going, washer fluid shooting out, doors locking and unlocking, and the lights blinking.

-- Doors will not lock/unlock with the remote. I have to physically lock/unlock each door with the key.

-- Rear passenger doors and the rear hatch won’t unlock.

-- When turning on the engine the horn starts blaring, the wipers (front and rear) start going, washer fluid shooting out, doors locking and unlocking, and the lights blinking for about 5 minutes. When I turned the car off it was still doing the same thing.

-- If I turn on/off the windshield wipers the horn starts blaring and lights start flashing

-- When pressing the actual door lock the horn starts blaring

Based on the research I did and other 2008 Dodge Nitro owner’s the diagnosis is apparently a faulty TIPM. It will cost several hundred dollars to replace and they are not even sure if replacing the TIPM will solve the problems. Who can afford to replace a part on their vehicle when there is not any guarantee that this will fix things? Even if I wanted to make the necessary repairs there seems to be a national backorder on this part. How are we to feel safe putting ourselves or others in our vehicles? I am afraid to drive my car for fear of something major happening while driving. My doors won’t unlock and I am terrified to have anyone in my car. What would happen if we are in an accident the car catches on fire? I won’t be able to get any one out, including myself.

Dodge has recalled the 2010-2012 but has failed to recall the 2008 despite the national backorder for the part needed to fix these vehicles. This tells me there is a bigger problem that they cannot even keep these in stock.

I am really surprised that Dodge/Chrysler has not stood by their products and is putting the owners of these vehicles at risk. What is it going to take to issue a recall on the faulty TIPM on all Dodge/Chrysler vehicles? Why has Dodge/Chrysler not rectified this situation before it becomes a bigger issue like the Ford tire recall, GM ignition recall and the recent airbag recalls?

My 2008 Nitro has the following issues:

1. wipers turn on by themselves and won't shut off

2. the washer doesn't work--being winter in New York and not being able to wash my windows does not make for safe traveling.

3. doors will not lock with the remote-I have to physically lock each door when getting out of the vehicle-My wife uses this car and I worry about security when she is out with this car

What is the next step for me to do? Seems to be a pretty common problem.

My 2008 Dodge Ntro (piece of crap) won't start. The windshield wipers won't shut off, neither will the horn. I bought this car thinking it would be a nice reliable vehicle that would surpass the other POS cars I have owned. Let me tell you I was WRONG! It started with the door locks failing to work keeping me from opening the rear hatch of this car. Dodge has recalled the 2010-2012 but has failed to recall the 2008 despite the national backorder for the part needed to fix these vehicles.

  • 94,000 miles

I have a 2008 Dodge Nitro, in July 2014 I noticed my keyless entry stopped working and the power outlet inside the truck also stopped working. I had noticed my truck would lock/unlock on its own. Several days later out of nowhere truck would not turn on, at all. Sent it to the shop and was told I was an electrical short that killed the power for the entire car. Shop "fixed" it and I was out $200. Seemed to be working fine until October 2014 when it would not turn on again.

Sent it to the shop again and was told initially it was the auto theft system in the car that had unprogrammed and I needed a new one. It cost $500. Then after putting in that part, car still would not start. Shop then told me it was the TIPM and that part was another $600 if I wanted it brand new. They finally put it a used TIPM for a 4x4 model, which mine is not, because apparently the part I need is on back order. The truck worked for ONE day. I have several lights on on the dashboard and the airbag light is on as well. So I've been w/o a reliable car since July 2014, almost 1k later and still the car will not start!!!! Chrysler has recalled every year except mine. Any suggestions?

I HAVE A 2008 DODGE NITRO RT. I BOUGHT IT WITH 19,000 MILES IN 2010. APPARENTLY IT HAS A BAD TIPM. I'VE HAD THIS PROBLEM FOR A LITTLE OVER 2 YEARS NOW. I DO NOT HAVE THE MONEY TO FIX IT. IT STARTED WITH THE WIPERS (FRONT AND BACK) MOVING ON ITS OWN, WINDSHIELD WASHER FLUID (FRONT AND BACK) SPRAYING, HEADLIGHTS GOING ON AND OFF, ALARM AND DOOR LOCKS GOING CRAZY!!! SOMETIMES ON ITS OWN AT THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT. NEIGHBORS CALLED THE COPS THINKING SOMEBODY WAS BREAKING IN MY CAR. NOW HEADLIGHTS TURN ON WHEN THEY FEEL LIKE IT. MOST OF THE TIME THEY WORK IS AT DAY TIME. SO I CAN'T DRIVE MY VEHICLE AT NIGHT.. I'M TIRED OF THIS CRAP. HOPEFULLY DODGE FIXES THIS PROBLEM.........

In September we had to have the TIPM replaced in our 2008 Dodge Nitro. This has gone out again. the windshield wipers just run and I have not turn signals. I also cannot turn off any other lights. There is not 1 available in the country. We are on hold while Chrysler searches to see if they have one. If not, we will be waiting while they make one. This tells me there is a bigger problem that they cannot even keep these in stock.

They have recalled the 2010-2012. RECALL the 2008. What is your problem Chrysler? You are ok with me driving for who knows how long illegally? No turn signals, no lights? How can I afford a rental car that is legal while you decide when I can have one? Pull your head out of your ass. I hope the folks in the class action lawsuit take you to the cleaners. My dream car was a Jeep Wrangler decked out to the nines. This will never happen. I will never buy another vehicle from you again.

I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH MY 2008 DODGE NITRO WHERE THE HEADLIGHTS AND TAIL LIGHTS WILL COME ON WITHOUT THE KEY IN THE IGNITION AND THE CAR IS JUST PARKED. ALSO THE DOOR LOCKS WILL LOCK AND UNLOCK AT THE SAME TIME. DURING THE NIGHT THIS GOES ON WHILE THE CAR IS PARKED AND DRAINS THE BATTERY COMPLETELY DEAD.

I BOUGHT A NEW BATTERY AND STILL THE DRAINAGE CONTINUES. THE ONLY TEMP FIXED IS FOR ME TO DISCONNECT THE BATTERY AND RECONNECT WHEN I WANT TO DRIVE IT. DISCONNECT AGAIN WHEN I REACH MY DESTINATION OR OTHERWISE THE BATTERY GOES DEAD.

I TOOK IT TO THE DODGE DEALERS AND THEY TOLD ME IT WAS THE TPIM MODULE AND THERE IS A BACK ORDER ON THIS PART. TOTAL COST OUT OF MY POCKET IS $990.00 NOT INCLUDING THE $200.00 TO ANOTHER MECHANIC WHO COULD NOT FIND THE PROBLEM.

WITH ALL THE WRITE UPS THIS PART HAS HAD, WHY HAS THERE NOT BEEN A RECALL INSTEAD OF JUST LETTING THE ISSUE GO ON. AND THE CUSTOMER HAS TO PAY OUT OF POCKET FOR A FACULTY PART THAT THE DODGE COMPANY KNOWS ABOUT. WHAT A RIP OFF. NEVER GOING TO BUY A CHRYSLER VEHICLE AGAIN. TOTALLY DISCUSSED WITH CHRYSLER VEHICLES.

My problem with the TIPM started with intermittent tail lights and random wipers, which has progressed to random honking horn, alarm, blower motor won't work for AC, Heater, radio, and the Nitro won't start on occasion. Dealership refuses to cover it and wouldn't replace it when the symptoms began. Their remedy was a new bulb on try 1, then a new tail light assembly try 2, then tail light wire try 3. A certain amount of time passed by before the issue reoccurred. Again they went back to wanting replace tail light bulb.

I stopped going back to the dealership because it became obvious they had no intention of repairing it correctly while under warranty. I want to sell this thing, but it's paid off and I can't afford a new car. Plus I'd be no better than Chrysler pawning it off on some unfortunate soul. I want Chrysler to stand behind this obvious known issue and fix it properly so I don't have to fear the day the airbag deploys driving down the highway or in an intersection full of oncoming traffic putting everyone's life at risk. Not to mention a possible injury just from the airbag.

I paid for a 3000 dollar warranty which should have covered this. Now I don't have the money. I pray my family doesn't get stuck somewhere with a baby and two toddlers in the middle of winter and no way to get them to safety out of freezing winds and temperatures.

I have been dealing with this problem since 2012. I have a 2008 Nitro and it started when I saw the brake light on. So I brought it to the Chrysler dealer. They told me there was nothing wrong. The light stayed on and on so I went back because now at this point when I turned the blinker to turn the dome light started to flash, they just looked at me like I was a nut and said there was nothing wrong. Then when I turned the wipers on the dash lights went off. Now I have dash lights coming on that is to do with the brake system 4 different warning lights.

I brought it to the garage and I was told I needed a part that is $1500.00 but they would try to find a used one. About a week later the lights went off went back to the mechanic and now I'm told as long as they are off there is nothing wrong!!!!! WT........ My doors lock automatically when I haven't even got the keys in my hand. I either have a possessed Nitro or there is something drastically electrical wrong. I called Chrysler and I have to have another evaluation before they can do anything. How many evaluations does one need!!!

I am so disappointed in this vehicle but more so in Chrysler for not fixing or finding what is wrong.

While driving vehicle windshield wipers would go off, lights would flash, dashboard would light up, all gauges would drop to 0. Took it in to Dodge and they stated TIPM was bad. Cost $550 to replace. This was back in 2012. Now currently have the same issue again. This time Dodge wants $800 to replace. I am over a year on the previous replacement so they will not cover under warranty. The new TIPM costs more because Dodge switched to a new company as the old company's module had known issues.

THEY HAD KNOWN ISSUES! So I have to cover for Dodge/Chrysler purchasing a crappy TIPM? I have yet to replace the new one. Waiting for a recall that will never happen.

Last Sunday, 8/17/14, I was driving out of my neighborhood when suddenly all electronics lit up on my dashboard. I pulled over and turned off the vehicle. I tried to re-start it and it would not start. I knew it was not the battery, for the battery is less than a year old. I am glad I was still in my neighborhood, for I had our baby with me. I walked home. I had to have the vehicle towed to a local shop I use for my oil changes. On Tuesday, when they were able to look at it, they were able to start the vehicle and pull it into the garage. They ran diagnostic etc. for 3 hours and could not figure it out. I drove the vehicle over to Dodge. They had the vehicle for 2 days and are not able to pin point the issue. They think it "might have something to do with PCM" and "may need TIPM". "lost communication TIPM U0100" when running diagnostic. They told me with the labor cost it would be around $800.00. We don't want to pay for this and it might not even be the solution! Shouldn't this be covered under warranty?! This morning, 8/25/14, I tried to start the vehicle 3 times to go to work and it would not start. Then on the 4th time it started. I drive around our 17 month old and have another one on the way. This is NOT OK! I just printed off the petition for defect investigation from Center for Auto Safety and will be contacting Dodge dealer/service center again to tell them what happened this morning and contacting Chrysler directly. I will continue my research. I am driving a vehicle we no longer trust and it is unnerving. We should not have to pay for this and Dodge should be able to pin point what the issue is here and fix it! I am so disappointed. We will never, ever buy a Dodge, Chrysler ever again.

Last night as I pulled out of my driveway heading to my local grocery store, I was startled when my headlights flickered three times and then went out. At first I thought that I might have hit the light knob therefore causing the lights to go out or that I never even turned the headlights on but I knew this wasn't the case. I should add that I was traveling down a dark street when my headlights went out and I basically had to stop dead in my tracks to avoid from running off the road or hitting anyone else. Frantically, I began turning the lights on and off to see if the headlights would come back on but to no avail. I then tried to turn on my fog lights and noticed that they did come on. Using the fog lights I was able to return to my house in one piece.

This morning I woke and went to my local Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealer and informed them of what happened. They told me they would be glad to check it out, but at a fee of $90.00 per hour. After an hour and half of checking out my vehicle, the service adviser told me that I had a faulty TIPM module and that it would cost $1050 to replace. He then told me that even if I wanted to replace it immediately, the part was on a national back order so it would be some time before it could be repaired. He told me my best bet was to only use my vehicle during daylight hours........no duh. He then charged me $160 for the diagnostic fee and told me I would give him a call in the following weeks to see if the part was available. Needless to say, I walked out very annoyed and agitated.

Before leaving he gave me the number to Chrysler Customer Care and told me that I could call and file a complaint. I promptly called the customer care hotline where I was quickly connected with a rep who took my statement and informed that there was no recall for this issue, but should one come up I would be contacted. She did her best to be sympathetic to my situation, but I couldn't help but feel like she was brushing me off since I didn't have an extended warranty.

This is my second episode with my Nitro. When I was leaving work and getting ready to put my key in to unlock my door, the horn starting blowing, wipers, front and back, came on including the water spraying out, doors locking and unlocking, gate open and closing. I then opened the door and started the engine and it continued to do the same thing. When I turned it off it was still doing the same. It was doing this for about 15-20 mins. until I had someone take off the battery cable. I was so embarrassed, everyone leaving work for the day was looking at me and everything. I work in an executive environment. I had to get a tow truck, rent a car for 2 days. The shop but my truck on the computer and tested everything. From the computer it was all fine. They put a new battery in and made a new key fob. Everything has been fine until not even 2 wks later. I was at a red light with a car in front of me and the horn went off and wipers came on, thank goodness is only for about 2 mins. Now I have to take time off work and see if they can fix this. I heard it may be a TIPM, and I do not have that amount of funds to fix. I have already spend a lot. Need Help.

I bought this car used less then 10 months ago. Up until this point, I've enjoyed driving it. Then a few days ago, it all went haywire. In a hospital parking lot of all things! The horn starts blaring, the wipers ( front and rear) start going, washer fluid shooting out, doors locking and unlocking, and the lights blinking. When I could finally get the car started, I attempted to drive it back home, still with everything going. The transmission wouldn't shift properly, leaving me to drive 50 mph at 4,000 rpm. From what I now read, I am not the only one with this problem. I am taking this car back to the dealer I purchased it from to see if they can repair it. Apparently the TIPM is the issue. I purchased the best extended warranty the dealer had, so the work should all be covered. I guess I will find out. Leave it to Dodge to find a new way to screw something up.

My car grew its own personality. The horn, wipers, fluid all went of randomly and would stay on. It was so bad that my car downshifted into low gear going down the interstate while all the wipers and horn turned on too. After doing research online it seemed to be a Chrysler issue with the TIPM. I took it straight to a dealer and my car would turn on and run without the key even in the car. They confirmed it was TIPM and now I'm fighting wi Chrysler to have them cover the cost. It has been an ongoing issue and it should be recalled because I'm not the only one with this issue.

For no apparent reason, whenever it feels like it, whether you are driving or if the car is parked, the horn will start blowing continuously, lights flashing, windshield wipers going (front & back), and the washer fluids starts spraying. I try pressing the alarm button on the key, doesn't stop it, I take the battery cable off and even then it takes about 30 seconds for this horrible noise to stop. It went off this morning about 4:00am and literally woke up the entire neighborhood. This is very stressful and annoying. What to do?
