loses power, wrench light on loses power, wrench light on

Certified Pre-Owned 2011 Ford Edge Limited AWD. Purchased in Nov. 2014. On Monday, July 13, 2015 the same issue happened to my vehicle AGAIN for the FOURTH TIME. As I was driving, the light came on on the left hand side of the instrument panel. The light said "AWD OFF" and had a little wrench symbol on it. The car abruptly lost power and I just coasted to the side of the road. I tried to press the gas pedal but nothing happened--there was no acceleration. My vehicle essentially "died" or stalled out without warning. While on the side of the road, the car idled rough like it was gonna stall out and was sputtering. I turned vehicle off, waited a few minutes and restarted the vehicle and it started right up like nothing ever happened. ONCE again, I took a couple of photos of the light on the dash, and sent them to the Dealership since they were aware that I had been experiencing this issue. Weeks prior, I went to the service dept. to get a diagnostic but nothing could be replicated. This is the FOURTH TIME and nothing can be done? It is still under manufacturer's warranty but unless they have a code, no one is doing anything.

Update from Jul 17, 2015: I forgot to mention in my description that I did file a complaint with the NHTSA and am waiting to hear back.

Edge SEL 3.5L V6

Car seemed to loose power. Happened just after I pulled out of my drive on to highway. Car almost stopped moving at all. I was able to turn around and get back into my driveway. Later in the day, my grandson cranked the car and drove it for about 5 miles down the highway, it did fine.

The next morning I drove out of my drive way, and it did the very same thing again. After I let it set for a while, I was able to get it to the shop they put it on the computer. It didn't show anything that was wrong with the car even tho the light with the wrench had come on both times this happened. The mechanic drove it and it did not happen while he was driving it. Well it has happened again today, the only difference was I had gotten to my destination, about 10 miles from my home, but when I started to return home it did the very same thing again.

This is a very bad problem, and could be very dangerous. The road I was on did not have very much traffic, but had I been on an interstate where the is a lot of traffic the sudden way the car lost power, it could have caused a very bad accident. I am not very pleased with this car, Ford needs to look into this problem and have a recall for this problem, It could be very dangerous.

Certified Pre-Owned 2011 Ford Edge Limited AWD. Purchased in Nov. 2014. On Thursday, July 16, 2015 the same issue happened to my vehicle AGAIN for the FIFTH TIME. As I was at a red light, the light turned green and I started to accelerate, when the "AWD OFF " light with the wrench icon came on on the left hand side of the instrument panel. The light said "AWD OFF" and had a little wrench symbol on it. The car abruptly lost power and I just coasted. I was stuck in the middle of the intersection, with no shoulder to turn off onto.

I tried to press the gas pedal but nothing happened--there was no acceleration. The drivers behind me were very mad and the truck behind me was screaming at me. I put my hazard on and turned off the car. Immediately tried to restart and it had a hard time turning over, but eventually did. I drove until I could pull over on a side street, and parked and turned off the car to let it rest because it still wasn't running normal. I waited a few minutes, then restarted the vehicle and was able to make it to work. THIS TIME I could not take any photos since I was literally stuck in traffic!

As soon as I got into work, I called the dealership and took my car there right after work. They gave me a loaner car and I am waiting again for them to call me to update me to see if they were finally able to replicate the problem. I will update as soon as I hear something.

Seems to be a reoccurring theme here. My wife was driving the 2011 Edge last week when the engine lost complete power. She had to coast over to the side of the road. No power at all, and engine ran very rough. She turned car off and waited about a minute. It started right away as if no problem at all and came straight home. I immediately brought the vehicle into a local dealer for the day. Technician could not get any codes (wrench icon on dash) because the car had been turned off. He took it out a couple times that day and it was fine. 6 days later the same problem happened again. This time Ford dealers said it would be a week before they could look at it again. 1 WEEK. (some dealers said longer. I called 15 dealerships in and around my home-none would even look at it. I did find one that would at least LOOK at it in 5 days) Apparently the Ford Escape had recalls that kept all the dealers busy. I called customer care at Ford for some help. Now I know its FORD CUSTOMER DON'T CARE. I had a supervisor call me back. Its company corporate policy that they cannot HELP ME at all. Just told me to take the car back to the dealer and hope they can look after this problem sooner than later. Yes, that was some customer care. Oh did I mention my wife just had surgery 5 days ago and I had to borrow my sons car to take her home from the hospital. Didn't seem to matter to FORD CUSTOMER CARE. Do I sound bitter?

They said corporate policy not to get a loaner car- nor was it corporate policy to get my car looked at faster. They said they would not bump a customer on a recall.

This is totally crap. I spent my entire life as a telecom technician putting priority on calls for customers- deciding which ones can wait till tomorrow (if need be) with a phone call to explain why.

Think I would buy another FORD after this experience?

While driving down a 4-lane Expressway, my 2011 Ford Edge accelerator pedal stopped responding. The car did not lose all power, the accelerator just went dead. The car was idling very roughly, but when I pressed on the accelerator pedal nothing happened. There was no shoulder on the road so I had to stop in the middle of the road! I am SO lucky that no one rear-ended me before I was able to maneuver off the road. I turned off the car and waited a minute or two and turned the car back on. The accelerator was working so I headed home.

The car went "limp" two more times before I arrived home a couple of miles down the road. The next day my husband followed me to the dealership with his emergency flashers on. My Edge went "limp" twice on the way to the dealership. The mechanic was familiar with the problem and diagnosed a bad Throttle Body. It was replaced for about $650.00 and the car runs fine now. This problem is common and needs to be addressed before someone is killed! I thank my lucky stars that this didn't happen on a busy interstate.

I think the description of “creep mode” (as someone described it) is spot-on. I believe my 2011 Ford Edge is doing (did perhaps) the same thing but I think that this is more of an electrical problem. My experience has been that I bought the car used and, within the first two months, I had “creep mode” six times. Two of those times, I was traveling under 30 MPH (once was braking, the other accelerating). Three times were on one (rainy) day – one of those times was under 30 MPH (accelerating). And at least three times, I had the cruise control on. However, the car never stalled and never failed to restart. So, in all, there didn’t seem to be a common denominator.

I’ve had idle air control (IAC) valve problems in the past (Dodge Durango) and this “creep mode” reminded me of those kind of problems, so I understand that the throttle body could HOUSE the issue but I don’t understand how it could be THE issue. Anyway, about two months ago, before a 700-mile trip (which I’ve made three additional times since), I disconnected the battery for 10-20 minutes (I don’t think time is much of a factor) to “reset the computer” – something I had learned from my IAC experience. Since that time and during those trips, I have refrained from using the cruise control (that was inconvenient on those trips) but I have not had “creep mode” either.

Have I fixed the problem? I don’t know for certain but it does suggest that the issue may be more electrical (computer, cruise control) than mechanical (the engine never stalled and I didn’t change anything mechanically except the oil). Eventually, I will experiment with using the cruise control – after all, it’s not much of a solution if you just stop using some of the car’s features (heck, if I stop using the car altogether, the problem wouldn’t occur either).

As odd as it may sound, I like this car very much but I could do without the “creep mode.”

Update from Aug 21, 2015: Update: I replaced the throttle body (perhaps 2 years ago) and no problems since. It was a fairly easy fix but make sure you get the correct part!

Four days previously, car was in shop for same problem. Was driving home on a busy Friday afternoon after picking up one of my children. Had both children in car and our dog. Was on same highway (as before) heading home and car lost all acceleration in major traffic. Wrench light came on as before. Was able to steer car to side of road. Had car towed back to same shop. Kept car for several days...had manager drive it home. Said they could not "duplicate" problem. Ford Tech line told them to "recalibrate" the sytem. Car was "recalibrated" and returned to us. Still waiting for this very dangerous situation to happen again! I'm terrified to drive the car with my children again! It's only a matter of time before it happens again!

car has stalled four times in six months. Some at high speed and some at low speed. Dealer has checked twice and cannot find anything on computer. The engine wrench sign comes on and the car goes into creep mode.

their only solution is to have the car towed in when the wrench light comes on.

not a very good solution when you are on a trip.

Update from Jun 12, 2013: After three times at the Ford garage, the car check engine light can after a stall. Ford diagnosed the problem as

a throttle body failure and replaced it. The car was out of warranty so I paid the repair cost. The Ford garage

is quite sure this was the problem,

While driving approximately 35 MPH, vehicle just lost power. Was still idling but nothing happen when pressing on the gas. Coasted over to side of road; was running really rough. The wrench warning light was on. Turned off and on and ran fine then. Happened again while backing out of driveway. Turned off and on and was fine. Bill Knight Ford in Tulsa has had the car for 3 days. There is no error code recorded so they cannot figure it out. They have driven it and cannot duplicate the problem. I am totally frustrated right now. I am picking the car up today. HA. He told me next time it happens to drive it over there while the wrench is still on. Ok, sure, I will drive 5 MPG for 30 miles on the turnpike. He says then have it towed here; sure, the wrench lite goes off when you turn the car off. This is a very dangerous problem. Hope if it happens again I don't get rear-ended on the street. GRRRRRRRR

Update from Jun 2, 2013: Bob Hurley Ford replaced the throttle body. So far so good!
