Hi:
I own a 2006 Ford Escape which currently has 59,100 miles on it. Upon hearing a persistent noise in the rear end, I brought it to my very trustworthy mechanic. He advised me that it is the rear differential, which according to him, should last the life of the car. He also informed me that this is extremely expensive to repair as the part alone is $1,800 when purchased from the dealer. Needless to say I am very disgusted especially due to the fact this car only has 59,000 miles on it and especially since my mechanic said that this particular part should last for the life of the car.
I would be interested to know if anyone else has had this type of problem? Was there a recall on this part that I missed? I have owned multiple Fords in my lifetime, however, I am inclined to say that this will be my last. Any solutions, suggestions, etc. are most welcome.

I had noticed before I purchased this vehicle that the rear diff. was leaking so the dealer agreed to replace the seals. After the seals were replace my 4WD light keeps blinking and I have no 4WD. I believe something is not connected or something. I called the dealer I bought the car from and he has agreed to fix the problem.

This will be the last Ford I ever own. I took this car back several times when it was under warranty and Ford said they couldnt find anything. Of course as soon as my warranty went up they said it was the differental. I will NEVER own a ford again.

Noticed excessive noise from rear of Escape. Removed leveling plug from rear diff just to have a look and found metal shavings. Took to dealership and needs whole new rear differential. Because of 59,000 miles it is out of warranty, even though it is only 2 years old.
Ford is refusing to offer any assistance in paying for this repair even though this is a part that should NEVER break. Worth mentioning is that the fluid level in the rear diff was right on spec and the fluid was clear (not white or foamy) showing NO signs of water penetration or leakage. Regardless of 59,000 miles, rear differential should not shred to pieces in a two year old vehicle. Can't believe Ford will not step up to the plate and admit that it either had a faulty part installed at the factory, or was put together wrong at the factory. We have always owned Fords, but this will sadly be or last. And if I can help it, the last Ford anyone that I know will buy.

This came about 3 months after replacing my whole transmission. It was making some awful noises in the back end, took it to the mechanic and he said the whole thing would have to be replaced because of the fact that it has shattered on the inside. GREAT! I have always been told how reliable this car is and now 2 pricey things need to be replaced within a 4 months period. how convenient for Ford that this happens right after the warranty goes out. $1,200 and 2 1/2 weeks later my car was fixed
