The power steering fails suddenly without warning while driving. You can still steer but it is difficult, sometimes it will fail as soon as you crank the vehicle. You can turn off vehicle then restart and it will be ok. This is a intermittent problem for now. There is a recal but only few models with the correct VIN number. However everywhere on line people are having this issue and the recal will not cover because of the VIN number. The steering should last the duration of the vehicle. This is extremely dangerous and all should be covered under this recal. Not just a select few this problem will occur in motion, or setting still. No pattern

The contact owns a 2009 Ford Escape. While driving and making a left turn, the vehicle jerked and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The steering wheel seized. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road and powered off the engine. The vehicle was restarted and was driven to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in a recall. The approximate failure mileage was 103,602.

The vehicle was taken to varney Ford Inc (237 moosehead trail, newport, me 04953) in July of 2015 for an evaluation, but they only erased the codes and advised the contact that the vehicle was fine. The dealer was not contacted for the recent failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

While making a right hand turn, my Escape seemed to lose power and was veryt hard to make the turn. Got out of the turn and it seemed fine but the power steering assist fault showed up on the dash. The next turn I made, it did it again! I googled it and it showed there was recalls for this exact same fault. Edmunds report 5-29-14 stated Ford recalls 1.1 million vehicles for power steering problems, including 2008-'11 Ford Escape, 2011-13' Ford Explorer. I took my 2009 Ford Escape to the Ford dealer to have them look at it. They ran my VIN number and comes up as no recall! they explain to me that they have ran into this problem before. That some of the recalls don't apply to all vehicles listed in recalls. I told the dealer how could this be? they offered me to call Ford directly at 1-800-392-3673...I will call this number once done with this vehicle safety complaint. It's a very good thing I was taking my daughters car today to go and put gas in it when this happened. If she was driving it, I'm not sure she would of been able to turn the steering wheel when this went out on me. No telling what could of happened and thank god she wasn't driving!

The steering column is bad and needs replacing and the steering assist relay module and wheel position sensor, this is identical to the models produced at the Kansas City plant. My vehicle began experiencing a stiff steering wheel after leaving walmart Saturday 10/6/19. It was then towed 10/9/19 to Firestone at which time they installed an alternator to supposedly to eliminate the stiff steering wheel, which was fine until 1/5/2019 at which time upon driving on the expressway I-290 heading to elgin from bellwood at 45 miles per hour or so I began experiencing a stiff steering wheel again. I had to turn around with great difficulty and fearfully back to bellwood and park vehicle at aunt's home and wait for another tow back to Firestone again. I was told on 1/7/19 by fausto, service manager of Firestone that is a defect. They informed me that there is a recall with Ford regarding this matter. I informed them that the recall didn't apply to my particular vehicle, but in another batch recall #14S05. So, I had my vehicle towed to Ford on 1/11/2019. I was previously told in early October, 2019 by Ford that my vehicle did not fall under the recall. I don't get why I am stuck with this bill for something that I perceive as a defect and should be added to the recall list in my opinion. Ultimately, on today 1/11/2019 I was charged $1,578 plus the cost of an alternator on 10/11/2018 to Firestone pursuant to the stiff steering wheel issue. This doesn't seem fair that because I am not in a particular batch I have to assume this responsibility, but I know that I am not alone. I purchased my vehicle at 17,781 miles so I virtually have only driven this vehicle on the neighborhood streets. It has never been out of town, and once to South holland, Illinois in all of this time. Please can someone help pursue this recall in the best interest of myself and other consumers of this Ford manufacturing product defect. Its stated on my receipt that it is code B81342 internal fault. See attachments. Thank you.

"takata recall" I called Ford in November 2018 to check for any recalls. I had 2 they said the parts had to be ordered and they would call me back for an appointment as soon as the parts came in. I got a call the beginning of December. I took my car in for the steering recall. Then on January 12 2019 my steering got really stiff on me while driving on the city street to go pick up my daughter from her school. Monday January 14th I took my vehicle in then I get a call saying its nothing they can do cause it don't have to do with the recall but clear across the message board it says "power steering assist fault " same recall now they telling me 1700 to fix it. I have had my truck almost 2 years come March and never had an issue with my steering until I took it in for the recall.

Corrections from original complaint#11165049 indicated by * asterisk. I called Ford in October for recall #14S05, because my steering wheel began to stiffen up to the point that I was unable to drive it. I was told by Ford that my vehicle did not fall in that batch of recalls. Ford stated I would be responsible for any work done. I had credit with Firestone so fortunately, I was able to take it there for this stiff steering. Firestone did complete a brake inspection and replaced the alternator, and air tire pressure sensor on Oct. 11, 2018. I have had my car towed home, then to one car repair place and then to Firestone car care service center causing me to spend cash money for one tow, and one by triple aaa both in one day, and now this recent tow exhausted all my tows with triple aaa. I can't re-tow until/19/2019 for renewal, but run the risk if is the same problem they still may not tow meaning additional money out of my pocket on a retired pension. On. 5, 2019 stiff steering issue returned. I was about to head for elgin, Illinois and on the expressway, and noticed when changing lanes the steering wheel began to stiffen. I pulled over and had to determine what was I going to do. I managed to get back on expressway turn around and return to my aunt's home, and then the wheel got extremely stiff especially when turning. I parked the vehicle and called for a tow to Firestone since I thought it was something they may have done incorrectly. Firestone called me and stated that this issue was beyond their capability. It is a defect, and I need to take it to Ford.

1/9/19 followup on a correction for complaint #11165049 to say that this incident happened on 1/5/19 not 12/5/19. I apologize for any confusion. I will also send additional information regarding the results from Firestone. I will then be towing my vehicle once more to al piemonte Ford for possible repair. I feel that this should be investigated and placed as a recall regardless of if it belonged to a particular batch of vehicles, which is what I was told by Ford in October. If this is there defect why shouldn't they be responsible for it when I have held of my part and paid for the vehicle and kept up with maintenance. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter. Sincerely,

- Chicago, IL, USA
