F-150 XLT 3.5L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 108,715 miles

So, from my previous report you saw the P0016 and others that should have pointed out to them to run the tests in the TSB 14-0194 for the Common Ecoboost Timing Chain stretch issue. But it was never done (and it would have been within warranty...)

The truck had started lunging in late August 2018, hesitation, and a serious loss of power, similar to what I had seen before.

Took it back to the dealer on Sept 04, 2019, they noted they also found P0017, P0016, P0018, P0021. They pulled the VCT Solenoids and found lots of metal debris, and found metal all over inside the engine. They said the only choice was to put in a new engine and turbochargers, and since it was now 108,715 (before it was 97,033), I was outside of warranty, and I had to pay the whole cost, 11,942.08 dollars!

So I ended up having to do this. Common timing chain stretch issue, could have been fixed, for free before, now I end up getting the shaft.

However, this is not the end either, see my next report that left my little kids and I stranded up in the mountains, with a snow storm coming in, and a harrowing freezing long walk out, with the engine on fire...

F-150 XLT 3.5L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 97,033 miles

Truck ran perfect until 96,000 miles never a problem (well, besides the battery leaking from driving in mountains and needing a new harness...). On way to work, all of a sudden it could not maintain speed, it was a little hairy on the freeway... Luckily the dealer was only 7 miles away, and I managed to make it there.

It was firing off Diag Codes P0016, P0299 (Turbocharger A underboost), P0128 (Coolant Thermostat) and something else I do not recall.

They spent much of the day running computer diagnostics on it. They changed the spark plugs and it ran great for a little bit... more to follow, on a follow-on report. They also did the Master Brake Cylinder replacement FSA16S24.

Side note, the truck has never pulled anything since purchase.

F-150 XLT 3.5L Ecoboost

  • Automatic transmission
  • 59,000 miles

I was driving on the highway through a construction zone and the engine lost power with no ability to accelerate at all. A wrench appeared on the screen and that was all. I almost caused an accident with other vehicles trying to avoid hitting me.

F-150 LX Eco-Boost V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 37,342 miles

Started with nuisance loss of power on freeway over long distance drive, but stopping, shutting off engine, and restarting reset the system and all was good for a few hundred miles. Eventually became problematic when engine would lose power every few miles. Was on cross-country trip so had to find local dealer in Montana (I live in Indiana.) Dealer immediately knew the problem, and fixed. Mileage that day was 37,000 on a 36,000 mile warranty, although the problem started around 35,000 miles. This was a "certified pre-owned" truck with extended warranty, but I still had to pay $100 deductible for the repairs. The dealership did us a solid and got it fixed in 2 hours, allowing us to get back on the road quickly. They were great. But they also told me they replace a lot of throttle bodies. Upon return to Indiana, I had my local dealer check out the vehicle and he also indicated a LOT of throttle body replacements. My feeling is that Ford knows there are problems with this. I was out of commission overnight and for a few hours in the morning, plus out of $100, on a vacation trip. The fear for me was losing power at high speeds on the interstate and having difficulties getting off the road to restart the engine.

When running right the 3.5L EcoBoost engine is a beast but you never know what you're going to get out of it! Hesitations and full body trembles are common especially on rainy days. I've taken the truck back to the dealer multiple times without any success of a fix! I have a $50k truck that is very undependable! Ford Corporate really hasn't done anything to help despite multiple calls and conversations, Ford don't want to believe it's happening!
