4 wheel hubs intermittentley engaging

The 4x4 has been back in my truck since the cold weather hit. Since Christmas time, I have been noticing the front driver's side was not locking in 4x4 even though the dash light indicated 4x4. Then after a period of time, you would hear a big bang, and that wheel would start turning... That would happen and there would be no trouble light on the dash (when this started happening in December). But for the last month or so, this has been happening, and then I have also been getting a "Check 4x4" message on my dash. I brought my truck to the dealer here in Corner Brook yesterday and told him about my problem with the 4x4. they said they checked it out and the 4x4 was fine. They argued with me that there was no problem when I was telling them that there was... I did not get off the parking lot of the dealership, when I got the message on my dash again (show in the attached picture). I had no 4x4 and the roads were slippery AF.

So truck is back in the dealership today, and we will see if they actually fix anything today??

As a side note, my truck was also in the dealership yesterday to have my door locks (in my crewcab) fixed... That fix did not work either and my door locks still don't work... Thanks a lot for the quality workmanship ford!!

Update from Feb 8, 2017: Did not get my truck back yesterday. Still in shop waiting for parts... They did check it out after I show the picture of the "Check 4x4" light on my dash (don't know why they did not check this yesterday...) and they found that I had an error code indicating a solenoid failing in the front left actuator. So this is being replaced. Hopefully this fixes it.

It would have been helpful and avoided a lot of frustrations if they had of just listened to me when I first told them my 4x4 was messed up...

Update from Mar 7, 2017: Had the solenoid replaced, it was better. But still did not engage a few times into 4x4. So the dealer replace the hub and actuator, problem still occurs. Now dealer tells me that the truck cannot be put into 4x4 on the fly?? That is not right. Never had this problem with any other 4x4 I have owned or driven... I have to go back to the shop for attempt number 4 this week (at fixing the 4x4 up front).... This truck is a lemon....

F-150 Style Side 3.5L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,500 miles

At 10,500 miles, a noise in the front end started. It sounded like a part of the truck was dragging on the pavement. This morphed into a noise like an air plane propeller. What is happening is the hubs are locking in 4 wheel mode without the trans. being shifted out of 2 wheel mode causing the front dif. to spin making a lot of noise and stealing a lot of power from the small V6. 5 visits to the dealer for a total of 16 days so far. replacing the l/f actuator asy. and seal .also replaced vacuum solenoid. This has not fixed the problem. The service tec. at the Ford dealership claims there is NO harm to anything on the truck from this. I don't believe this for a second ! This has gone on for long enough , and makes the truck hard to drive and possibly a safety concern. The truck is going back for another guess repair on Tuesday. What I need to know is how much damage is occurring to the components of the trans????? I am now considering a lawyer and the lemon law!!! I have a lot more detail. this is all my BP can take for now.
