My husband was traveling to Wyoming for a job, we live in MO, just over the Neb/WY boarder his computer said "overheating", he immediately pulled into a vacant lot, it was 2am. He had to wait until businesses opened and found a tow truck that towed his truck to the yard and unloaded his motorcycle from the bed for $80. He then called me, never did I think he would have problems with his truck, its only got 43,000 miles on it! The truck had said overheating and he checked the antifreeze-gone-!!! It was fine when he left our house at 4:30 the previous afternoon. The truck would not start and white fumes were coming from the exhaust. We both called the Ford Consumer Relations 800 number. He spoke to a representative in Missouri and I spoke to one in Wyoming. The representative he spoke with said that if he had it towed to a Ford dealership and is was diagnosed as a powertrain issue Ford would do a one time extension on the warranty since we were under the 60,000 but over the time by one month, it expired 5/4/12. We paid $400 to have it towed to the closest dealership in Cheyenne. He paid the tow truck business and then had to drive to Casper, WY for orientation on his motorcycle. He was tired from driving and was putting his life at risk on a motorcycle in the winds. It took him several hours to get to Casper. He then had to start work in Midwest, WY the following day. Most of his belonging were still in the truck 6 hours away. We were waiting for the dealership to diagnose the truck. EGR cooler was fractured, 8th cyl ruined and needs a new diesel particulate modular, 15,526!!! Basically needs a new engine. In the meantime I had been talking to representatives on the Ford Customer Relations 800 number. They conveniently could not find my husband's recorded phone conversation, however, Verizon could find the 19 minute conversation on my husband's phone record. So, of course now Ford is denying any cooperation in repairing the damage. We would not have paid $400 for a tow to Cheyenne if Ford did not say they would repair the EGR cooler on the phone, my husband knew what had happened, a mechanic was at the tow yard and told my husband it is a common problem and he would fix for $1500. Of course at that time we did not know about the 8th cyl problem and the need of a new long block. I contacted a supervisor and she basically said my husband was a liar, Ford would never agree to extend a warranty for a one time repair. I spoke with a diesel mechanic in Kansas City that deals with this every day at a large Ford truck repair center. He said that Ford DOES agree to extend a warranty for a one time repair. The supervisor also denied any problems with the EGR cooler, again she lied, the mechanic said he sees it ALL the time and explained it to me in detail how when the EGR cooler fractures it forces all the coolant to the 8th cyl and bends the rod. I sent a 2 page letter to Ford in Dearborn, MI and got a one paragraph note praising themselves and telling us we were on our own basically. It is going to cost us another $1050 to have our truck hauled to MO from WY because of course its a dually and not running. Here is my major problem: we have owned 8 Fords in the last 16yrs. We paid cash $35,000 for this useless truck, it only has 43,000 miles on it! I have researched on line and Ford does not stand behind their product, there is several entries on the EGR cooler and customers having the exact same problem and Ford does NOTHING. But, Ford is suing Navistar, the manufacturer, for who should pay for this problem. Ford reports a 22 Billion profit but screws the consumers! How are they able to get away with this? Did I mention my husband was going to Wy for a job?? He has been laid off for a long time and we can't afford $15,526 to repair a truck that should NOT have broken down in the first place. We just want Ford to stand behind their word. The supervisor was rude and well trained, she claimed complete ignorance to any problems with the EGR or lawsuit against Navistar. My husband WAS told they would repair the damage as a one time extension, the mechanic said he sees that all the time too. So, since I got the paragraph from Ford today guess I will schedule the hauling back of the worthless heap from WY, thank you for letting me vent.
