problem #25

Focus 4-cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 154,000 miles
The contact owns a 2000 Ford Focus. On April 21, 2007 the contact had the vehicle checked along with an oil change. After driving 50 miles at speeds between 65-70 mph the engine light illuminated and the vehicle began to vibrate, stall, surge, and lose power before failing completely. The vehicle restarted, and was taken to a Ford dealer for a diagnostic test. The mechanic diagnosed the failure as the fuel system. The vehicle had safety recall # 06E056000 concerning fuel system, gasoline, but the vehicle was excluded due to the VIN. The vehiclewas currently at the Ford dealer. The current and failure mileages were 154,000.

Washed car at local car wash, and car ran fine. Got home to do finishing touches and kept car running. Low on fuel, a little under the 1/4 line, but ran fine. Went back out about four hours later to go grocery shopping, and car would not start. All the lights and dinging would come on, but the engine wouldn't turn over. For 2 days my car sat in the parking lot not starting. I would go out in the morning to try and start it, and it would almost start, but wouldn't. I had aaa tow my car to a repair shop and when it got there, they called me and asked what I was trying to do. They got the car off the truck and it started right up. They are keeping my car over night to try and start it in the morning. I feel really dumb now and bad for wasting their time. What could the problem be?

While attempting to pass on a two-lane highway, my 2000 Ford Focus sputtered and loss speed for no reason. I was unable to return to my original lane because another car had moved up close to the vehicle I was passing. I had to swerve onto the opposite shoulder of the road to avoid being hit by oncoming traffic

On winding turns and hills car would act as if it was out of gas, especially if tank fell below half. Car stall on one occassions but on others I took foot off gas and managed to recover power. The dealer replaced the fuel filter and pump (with the explanation that it was failing under heavy load). While the problem has not repeated itself, the car feels more sluggish than it used to. I also try to keep the tank above half full, as several sites have recommended.

I have had numerous problems with my 2000 Focus. Ford has not been willing to fix any problem due to the fact that I'm out of my warranty. My power steering switch has went out 2 times and when I take it back now there telling me it wasn't the switch, its the pump. Since that's out of warranty they can't refund my money or anything. Ford has a recall on left wheel bearings, but I had to pay for mine to be done, because the recall was in 2001 and my bearings did not go bad until 2002. There is too many things wrong with the Ford Focus. I have never seen a car in which I had to fix every 5 months. The current issue is that the car is stalling. In idle it will get a point where it will cut off. When shifting to different gears, it hesitates. The car is shaking like it will eventually cut off. It has cut off 3 times and the emission/engine light came on.

Ignition tumbler breaks and steering wheel locks up. Can not start car. Happened around 29,000 miles first time and 60,000 miles the next time. I also have a problem with the car stalling. Going around corners and up hills it is like the car has run out of gas. You then slow down and it will return to normal. Also happens on the on and off ramps of highways. Very dangerous.

After negotiating a cloveleaf onramp, the engine runs out of fuel and stalls. This happens all the time and is dangerous as we have many 18-wheelers in our area barreling down on your vehicle as it loses power.

This problem started happening around 12,000 miles, and while this form asks for a failure date, it does it so much it is hard to say, I put an approximate date of the worst occurrence because of the problem. I realize there is already an investigation about this, I just wanted to add another testimony. When the fuel tank is less than half full, and the car takes right-turns, especially long, sweeping turns, such as highway entrance/exit ramps, the car will jerk and lurch violently, refusing to accelerate, and will stall if provoked enough. If I back off the gas, it recovers, but twice it has completely stalled out, refusing to turn back on for a few hours, one of these times was in heavy highway traffic, I coasted at about 25mph since it would not accelerate, then it eventually died. This particular incident, my dealer filled the tank with gas (which does not allow for the problem to occur, kind of stupid of them), and then drove it around, but would not allow me to show them how to replicate the problem. I must now keep my gas tank more than half full, because of the dangers in getting on and off the highway. It even does it around town now, at times. The dealer says it is a result of a fuel filter getting clogged and they would just clean it out, but other Focus owners I associate with (www.focaljet.com) have reported that this is only a temporary fix. Otherwise, I have absolutely no complaints about this car, and I applaud Ford for the recalls, they may make our car look bad but it shows Ford is accepting responsibilty for defects, and trying to improve on them.

My whole is my problem. I lease this car for three years and they could not tell what the problem is. I spend more time at the dealership then I did on my job. I am still having problem with Ford Focus and they still don't know what the problem is. The customer service at adamson Ford is very poor. This where my first time driving a american car. They did not want to get me out of the car and then I call the owner of adamson Ford he did not call me back at all the only thing I could try to do is file lemon law but it will take so long for it to take action I drop the case. This should be taking off the market and people should get there money back. Because I almost got hit two time by 18 wheeler with my baby girl in the back in a car seat they don't give a [xxx] about that at all. This car is having problems right as I type you this letter. I am very up set on this car I have 12 months left and they still will have problem when I finish with it. I have many more problems but I am at work and it will have to type them later today. Please do something about this before it is to late and someone will get kill injured really bad. Information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).
