Focus ES 4cy 2.0 Liter

  • Automatic transmission
  • 35,360 miles

I was in the slow lane on Highway 50 in California, called a freeway here. I was being pushed due to traffic by a standard pickup and was going 70 mph. The RPM's dropped to 2 and the acceleration dropped from 70 to 20 mph without warning. If the pickup had hit me instead of screaming and shaking his fist at me about 3 car loads of people and then me would have all burned to death because the pickup would have hit the full gas tank. The miserable thing limped along, picked up a little speed to about 30 mph and then did the same thing again. I finally got it to the first off ramp and exited the freeway. This piece of crap did the same thing three more times on surface roads where I was driving at 45 mph, the speed limit, before I could get it home. The idiot light on the dash was the wrench and per the owner's manual that means the drive train and the solution is to call your mechanic, which I did. I took it in on the 15th and my mechanic could not get the computer to give him an error code, it wiped itself clean.

I called the dealership where I bought this miserable thing and got told "oh well, bring it in and for $157 per hour we will look at it". I told them what they could do and they were going to tell me what the problem was or they would wish they had. I got told to have my mechanic check the throttle body, because the dealership had been replacing those on the Focus. I got a copy of the Technical Service Bulletin that Ford Motor Co., is sending to its dealerships which was issued on November 8, 2010 (2 months before I bought this thing) and per them "Some 2010 Edge, MKX, F-150, E-Series,2010-2011 Flex, MKT, Focus, Taurus, MKS, Fusion and MKZ vehciles with any of the following engines: 2.0L, 3.5L (excluding GTDI), 3.7L and 4.6L 2V, may exhibit Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P2111, P2112, or the idle speed drops lower than desired and/or fluctuates. The idle speed concern can be intermittent and DTCs P@111, P2112 may or may not be present. If the vehicle exhibits any of the following sumptoms, replace the throttle body, Refer to WSM, Section 303-04. 1. DTC p2111 and/or P2112. 2. Idle speed lower than desired. 3. Idle speed fluctuates."

My belief is that until Ford Motor Co. is paying out more money in settlements for wrongful death suits, then a recall would cost them, they will do nothing, but tell their customers to pay to have it fixed or get rid of the vehicle. Now my piece of junk is going to cost me $450 for the throttle body and then the labor to install it, because I can not afford to get a new vehicle. My mechanic is not sure this will fix the problem because I am so lucky that my junk is not recording an error code. I am scheduled to have this piece of crap fixed 4/6 and it will be on my dime.

I will NEVER purchase another Ford for as long as I am on the planet. I have purchased 9 Ford vehicles because they were reliable. These vehicles are no longer made in this country and instead come from places that have no government oversight or regulations governing the production of anything from food to vehicles. If I have to trash this car I guess I will begin the age old way of transportation and that is a horse.

I think that I would not have this kind of problem. That is why I don't buy Fords.

Focus LX V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 48,000 miles

This car has been great for about a year, which is when we bought it. There is now a wrench light that comes on and shaking occurs with low speeds going into effect. This was supposed to be covered under a recall sent out to us, which they changed the oil and checked a few parts (saying they took care of the contamination which was supposed to cost around $130 that I didn't have to pay for). This started on 7/4/14 and was supposedly fixed on 7/8/14. It is now doing it again today 7/12/14. This will be addressed as there is around 48k miles and should not be problems with the transmission already, which seems to be what the issue is.
