Fusion SE V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 85,500 miles

My daughters car. On 3 occasions now, she has experienced the pedal going to the floor and then it gets real hard and can't stop. Had everything checked, but can't find any problems anywhere. Pretty dangerous for that to happen and not be able to get it repaired.

The ABS system totally failed and the estimate to replace it was $3,500 and that was from two places. It happened the first time when I hit a bump in the road and it was raining - I went to stop and my brake pedal went to the floor with no slowing of the movement of the car - it was terrifying! Wasn't sure what happened - and then I got it home in the garage - let it dry out - and the next day drove it and it seemed like the brake pedal was "softer" than before but nothing seemed to be amiss. Then it happened again in November when it was cold and slushy and the same thing happened again. That is when I took it in - and was told that the car technician was able to re-create the situation - and couldn't believe what happened - total ABS failure. He called around and couldn't believe that there hasn't been a recall for this - the cost was too expensive to repair.

Fusion SE V6

I own a 2009 Ford Fusion SE AWD and on Sept 25, 2017 was the second incident of brake issues I have had. The first was over a month ago and I tried to brake and my pedal went all the way to the floor. I had to pump the pedal in order to get enough pressure to stop before hitting the car in front of me. I had more then enough stopping room had my brakes worked properly.

The next incident I attempted to brake and the pedal went all the way to the floor again but this time pumping the pedal did nothing for me. I had to go out of my lane to avoid hitting anyone. I turned the car off and back on the pedal was normal again. This is very frustrating to get fixed since it could be a few different parts and only does it at random times.

I have read a lot of other complaints for the same issue with the Ford Fusion I'm just wondering why they haven't done a recall on the parts that are malfunctioning. I don't have that many miles on my car 76,500 for this to be happening.

Basically, if your ABS kicks on while you are braking, there is a chance that valves in the hydraulic pump unit may stick, limiting pressure that should be going to your caliper/brakes. This is an issue that is confirmed in both the 09 and 08 models but may also effect different years too.

Temporary fix involves forcing your ABS to activate again, ideally in a safe spot like an empty parking lot.

Replacing the HCU is probably the best way to deal with this but if the replacement part has the same design as the defective part, the issue will eventually return. Also, replacing the HCU is going to cost several hundred dollars in parts and labor ($500+).

Ford need to recall this and replace defective HCU's with a properly working part, but that will probably never happen.

Update from Oct 20, 2016: I have filed a complaint with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) about the issue. The more complaints they receive about this, the greater the chances of a recall. Considering the fact that this issue cripples braking in several models of cars, and this is quite clearly a manufacturing defect, attention needs to be brought to it.

Fusion 4D 3000 6c

It appears this is a standard problem with the Ford Fusion; I see 64 complaints reported. Mine makes 65. Many of these complaints point to misdiagnosis (poor troubleshooting skills) on the part of Ford dealerships.

And that indicates a factory defect. This should not have happened suddenly, without warning, in the middle of a busy interstate.
