Ranger XLT 2.3L 4 cyl

  • Manual transmission
  • 90,000 miles

Doing a internet search revealed this is a common problem on Ford Rangers for certain years and the smell of gas associated when filling up at the gas station, at around 80,000 miles, the smell was slight but it got worse as I reached 90,000 miles and had to eventually have it fixed by a dealer for over 600.00 with labor, since I could not get the OEM static free part anyplace else, some people said they were using cheap rubber and that is a very bad idea, Ford should list this as a recall or charge less on this common problem. I did see a the OEM part for 97.00 on another website with original price as 385.00 but it was after the fix, too late since i did not have the tools to lift the bed or drop the tank anyway.

I'm in a very small town finding an independent mechanic is not an option. The only mechanics around are dealerships. And they hold a gun to your head for repair prices!

Ranger XLT 2.4 L4

  • Manual transmission
  • 69,000 miles

I found I had a problem when filling up one day and the driver next to me pointed out that fuel was poring out from under my truck. After driving 50 miles, the leak stopped, so I suspected a filler pipe problem. The rubber tube was split where it went over the fitting on the fuel tank. Luckily (or maybe not) it didn't catch fire.

Ford charges over $300 for the part, plus another $100 for labor, but my local independent garage fashioned a fix for $150.
