Sputters as if starving for gas, won't go above 3000rpms, shuts off

Taurus

  • 85,000 miles
Car accelerator got stuck at about 4,000 rpms. It would not dislodge until car was forced to stop by maxing pressure on brakes and putting car into 'park'. research shows that the cruise control cable gets worn and disconnects from the throttle body and can get stuck on the throttle cable disallowing the throttle to return to idle position. This VIN is not subject to any open recalls but the condition is very dangerous.

Car will not start right away, must pump gas and keep trying after a minute or 2 then it starts. We know there is a plastic part on the fuel line and were told to watch for issues and a recall as there were many issues with it.

Cruise control stopped working - checked cable at throttle and it had come unattached-reattached cable and all was fine for a day. Then car started to hold speed when cruise control was not on. When braking, felt like gas pedal was still engaged. Put car into neutral and rpms went up. Tapped gas pedal and all returned to normal. Put car back into drive and it was fine again for a few minutes, then same problem happened again. Car will hold rpms as if gas pedal is still engaged even when my foot is no longer on the gas. Have to depress gas pedal hard and fast to get it to disengage again. Beginning to happen more regularly. Have to put the vehicle in neutral often to come to a safe stop. Cruise control cable keeps detaching from its housing and makes the throttle stick partially open.

When going down the street at any speed, the car can just start going faster on its own, going around corners or anytime going down the road. Its getting very dangerous. Most of the time when you tap on the gas pedal, it will break free and go back to normal but sometimes it just goes faster and faster. Have to pop it in neutral and keep tapping the pedal and hope it goes back to normal. Very dangerous for me or my kids and other drivers on the road. Another thing is that I can turn on the cruise control and the light shows it is on but when I push the set button nothing happens.

Car continued to accelerate and had difficulty in stopping. Put into neutral and engine raced for a few minutes, tapped gas pedal and it slowed down. There have been four incidents of this nature since the latest being Sunday, July 1, 2012. After the first three incidents it was taken to the local Ford dealer and they could find nothing wrong. The last incident when put into neutral the engine and transmission shook for a while and it slowed down.
