I have had a rattle in the dashboard of my 2009 GMC from about two weeks after purchase. I have had it in for repair 7 times in the year 1 year 5 months of ownership. Last repair was done about 4 weeks ago and rattle started again two weeks after last repair. I am not sure if this is an issue that can compromise the steering or not.
