Element EX

  • Automatic transmission
  • 166,000 miles

Just bought this Element and it is really irritating. You get up to speed and the engine light comes on and then looses power and jerks. You have to let up on the gas and try to work it out. You can't put the cruise control on because it will set it off quicker. It has been in the shop trying to fix it but they can't get it to stop. They have replaced the block, filters, and a couple of other parts. They are stumped and now they are sending it to the dealer to see if they can come up with a fix. I bought this as/is with the understanding that they would fix this problem but I love this car.

Update from May 25, 2016: we found out when the car dealer changed the oil to the correct oil it that it was not enough pressure to get the censor to work correctly. We put two cans of oil thickener in it and it has all but stopped. our next oil change we will put 10w30 in it to see if it stops completely.

Element V4

  • Automatic transmission
  • 168,520 miles

This has been a recurring problem that has challenged the most experienced mechanics. Most Honda problems I've had in the 4 I've owned have been typically wear and tear items such as alternator, radiator etc. Never has it been as serious as this apparent oil pressure control switch. At close to 3000rpm the engine sputters until one takes their foot off the accelerator (low/moderate acceleration rate) engine light comes on and returns to normal engine function. After a few days of below 2500 rpm operations the engine light may go out. This vehicle has been cared for as all the others with scheduled maintenance performed on time and driven reasonably. The reliability and quality of American made Honda's is dwindling in the opinion of this long time customer. TQM/CQI etc is not taken seriously here especially when the bottom line is effected.

v tech oil pressure switch changeout fixes issue for a while
