Odyssey EX

The tail light comes out with a few screws. You'll see the gasket between the tail light and the door gets rotted. $20 for the gasket at the dealership. I replaced it in the driveway. It's tricky to slide the tail light in and out, but the gasket goes on easily. A long screwdriver is helpful to nudge the plastic pins into the holes. I drained the water out of the light and dried it, since it's easier to do when it's out.

First I noticed drops, then an inch of water in the rear light assembly (on the back hatch). This is the 4th time this has happened in 7 years. Each fix is $300+ per light assembly.

Odyssey LX V6

Water filling rear passenger side back up light assembly. I thought it might be a loose gasket, but the technician at the Honda dealer told me there are no gaskets and they have to order a new assembly ($240) and perform labor ($180) to replace the entire assembly. It's just plastic, and there were no cracks evident so I am not sure why replacing it will fix the problem. I checked internet after dropping off the van and found this is a relatively common problem, but Honda does not admit a manufacturing defect. There is also a TSB for models up to 2009 that talks about this problem caused by too much sealer, and advises replacing the gasket. Maybe they stopped using gaskets in the light assemblies in 2010? (Oh well. Next time I have a problem, I will surf the internet first to see if I can save myself some money. Lesson learned.)
