We rear-ended the car infront of us because the anti-lock brake system engaged when there was no reason to do so. We were stopped at an intersection on a hot, clear day, when the light turned green and the car infront of us moved into the intersection, turning left, stopping to let oncoming traffic pass. I was prepared to slow down and stop to allow the traffic to pass. As I applied pressure to the brakes, we heard a noise come from the engine compartment, and proceded to rear end the vehicle infront of us. Unfortunately, I only carried liability coverage on the truck, so I was facing having a non-operable vehicle or a $3,500 bill to fix the damage to the front of the truck. We made several claims to Honda of America, which were processed, but in the end, the stated that they would assume no liability (must have stepped on the accelorator I was told). I am setting up an email account to pool our resources, information, stories and results together. Please email me if you would like to see my letters to and from Honda of America at passport_brakes@yahoo.com. I would like to hear how other people have dealt with this issue.

I have experienced multiple failures of the ABS system since purchase. The problem was intermitnt and generally at speeds of less than 20 mph on dry roads. I would estimate no fewer than 25 failures in two years wherein the brakes fail to engage properly at low speed causing the vehicle stopping distance to be excessive. When braking, the brakes often failed to engage particularly at rough intersections. It feels as if the vehicle slides over the bumps. Now the ABS light came on and remains lit. The ABS unit itself runs even with the motor off. I have removed the fuse and disengaged the ABS which allows the vehicle to operate safely although there is no ABS active. With the ABS disengaged, I have had no additional problems. I believe this is a very dangerous and common safety defect with the 1999 Passport. There are a significant number of similar complaints to NHTSA and on the web which indicate this to be a manufacturer defect. I understand that this defect is currently under investigation and I would recommend fast-track recall action to avoid accidents related to this defect.

Braking system malfunctioned, causing extended stopping distance. In one case, braking system was inoperative and resulted in a crash. Dealer said occupant's foot slipped off brake pedal and hit gas pedal. Previously, took vehicle to dealer for brake repairs. The consumer had three brake failure incidents for which the dealer could not find the cause. During the fourth failure, the vehicle went out of control and crashed, causing damage. The dealer states that the consumer possibly stepped on both brake and accelerator at the same time. ABS light illuminated after accident. Engine light illuminated due to manifold gasket leaking, dealer replaced it.

Anti-lock brakes regularly release/fail while braking and traveling over large bumps. An example: While braking downhill to make a right turn, I traveled over a large bump in the asphalt. The brakes disingaged even though I will still pressing on the peddle. I had to remove my foot and re-engage the brakes. This has happend to me for times, and is well known among late model Passport and rodeo owners.

My ABS brakes failed when I was pulling up to a red light in the rain causing me to rear-end another driver. The approximate speed was less than 20 mph, and my Passport pulled to the right as I was stepping on the brake. The check engine light came on blinking prior to impact after I had stepped on the brake, and went solid after I hit the other driver. I took the car into the Honda dealership who has been servicing my vehicles for over 4 years. They have determined that the check engine light was not related to the accident, and was caused by the master cylinder resetting itself. They find no issue with the brake system, and say there isn't a defect. However, I was driving home from the accident and the brakes failed to engage 2 more times with a pull to the right. Both times were on wet roads in drizzle conditions when the vehicle was going less than 20 miles per hour. This occured again, same weather conditions on 1 November, again with the car going less than 20 mph and again pulling to the right. This situation cannot be reproduced when the weather conditions are dry, and sometimes cannot be reproduced in the rain either. In the accident of 27 October, the bumper of the Passport was damaged more on the front right than on the left. Which supports the stick and slide that I have felt each time the brakes fail to engage. I would like to know if anyone else has had this problem, and if so, what can I do to fix it? I don't feel safe or trust my car anymore while driving.
