Prior to purchasing the vehicle, the contact was not informed that it was included in NHTSA campaign number: 18V137000 (seat belts, air bags) and service campaign number: 953 (ECM & cluster update-engine monitoring logic product improvement). Shortly after it was purchased, the vehicle stalled without warning due to engine failure. Auffenberg Hyundai (1300 central park dr, O'fallon, il 62269, (618) 622-9001) was notified of the failure and was to follow-up with a response within 48 hours from the manufacturer. The contact was left without a vehicle and was waiting for the dealer and the manufacturer to determine if there was an option of a loaner vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and was to provide a follow-up response to the dealer and the vehicle owner. The failure mileage was not available.

Engine failed: Loud noise, rattling sound, inability to accelerate beyond 45mph. Two shops we took it to diagnosed as engine failed, replace engine... based on compression test, stethoscope to engine, etc. The car was being driven on a highway, when the noise started, lack of acceleration was felt, driver pulled off the highway, and drove slowly up to a nearby parking lot. We actually drove 12 miles on city streets to a mechanic shop we knew who gave the first diagnosis.

The contact owned a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. While stopped at a red light, the contact's vehicle was rear ended by another vehicle. As a result, the contact struck the preceding vehicle. The air bags deployed. The contact stated that the seat belt restraint system failed to operate as intended. The contact stated that the seat belt support and front passenger seat fractured. The contact sustained a concussion, a hematoma on the forehead, and swelling of the brain. The front seat passenger sustained injuries to the head and swelling when her head struck the windshield. Two additional passengers in the rear seats sustained minor injuries. The contact and passengers sought medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 89,500.
