faulty steering wheel lock unit

Today my EX35 a yellow light with a key came on and car started fine drove it to for a few hours and it was fine, got to my destination and came back to the car 15 mins later and it won't start, called a locksmith and my mechanic and after five hours got to the issue via Google. The faulty part is the steering wheel lock unit.

A former Infiniti mechanic said that Nissan Altima uses the same part and got recalled on those vehicles. He also stated that with just moving the telescoping the steering wheel in and out the problem goes away. He was right and now the vehicle starts. However, service department states that the vehicle could lock the steering wheel while driving. They want $1,100 to fix the problem. My take is that this is a safety issue and should be treated as the same situation as the Altima. After a little more digging found out 350Z has the same issue. So it's a lot of Nissan and Infiniti.
