Cherokee Laredo 2.6L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,000 miles

So my car started to make a chime when making hard right turns, and then one day it died. When it started back up, I had it checked out and they couldn't find anything... so I got to thinking about the oil. When I checked halfway through my 5000K oil change, there was none on the dip stick.

We then checked for leaks and found none. So my Jeep takes about 5 quarts of oil in between each oil change just to go. There was no kind of words or information given to me at the time of purchase that I would have to add oil this way! LEMON PEOPLE - LEMON! I am just glad I was not in traffic when it died... no fix, oh get a new car! LOL

Cherokee LX 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 5,000 miles

The car has used a quart of oil every 2000 miles. One reason I bought the car was 10,000 mi oil changes. On the first 5000 miles, the motor died on me twice. It was a little over 2 quarts low. They've done the oil usage test 1000 miles ago and it has used a little over 1 half quart. Goldy Auto of Huntington WV said that was normal for that motor. They said I should change oil every 5000 miles. I have never had a car that used that much oil so I called manufacturer and they said the same thing Goldy Auto said, except I should change oil every 3000 miles. I felt like I should have been told that before I bought it. I have over 70,000 miles now and nothing has changed - over a quart every 2000 miles.

Cherokee 2.5L

This engine is clearly defective. I added 2.5 quarts of oil just a couple thousand miles after the oil was serviced. If you don't add oil frequently between oil changes, the car will just stall out and leave you stranded. In Alaska, this is particularly dangerous for numerous reasons on a dark, very cold and icy road.

Cherokee LS 2.4L 4 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,000 miles

The car shuts off while driving. It's a real safety issue going 35 mph on a highway and the car just dies! I'm going back for a second oil compression test. They need to get this engine off the market. They say I should change the oil in 800 miles before I need to to fix this issue. I say bs - it's a safety issue that needs to be addressed.

Cherokee 2.4L

  • CVT transmission
  • 20,000 miles

At about 20,000 miles it started stalling for no apparent reason. Took it to the Dealer and was told this model stalls when it is low on oil. The check shifter light also comes on and has to be reset in order to move. It uses about a quart of oil every 3 weeks. I am disappointed with this vehicle, as the Jeep name has always been synonymous with good quality and dependability, but not so with this one.

Cherokee Latitude 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 1,200 miles

I have returned to the dealer every thousand miles for the last 10,000 miles where they put me on an "Oil consumption monitoring" program. The last time, March 2020, they told me to have the oil changed (which I did at my expense), come back in another 1000 miles and if they had to add oil, they would replace the engine. I called this September to schedule the 1000 mile check and was told Chrysler extended the interval to 1500 miles. I drove another 500 miles, returned to the dealer, they topped off the oil and told me to put "Another 1500 to 1700" miles on it and return, whereupon they would (again) "Replace the engine..."

Cherokee 4.2L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,000 miles

The Jeep started stalling. I called the dealer and they told me to change by 5,000 miles. This went on until I had my oil changed at 6,000 miles and I was told the oil was down 2 quarts. I called the deal and they said to come in and they would run a consumption test on the car and if it was bad enough they would put in a new engine.

I have not gone for the test as yet because I just changed my oil and they wanted to make me pay them for a new oil change. I have no guarantee they will even fix the problem.

Cherokee Limited 4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 31,915 miles

My Jeep started stalling in the middle of intersections, when cornering and when at stop signs. I had 2000 miles till the next oil change. Always been faithful about getting oil changes when due. No engine light ever came on to alert me or the check oil light. I took it to the Jeep dealer where I bought it. They are doing an oil consumption test every 500 miles. I’m in the process now.

I took it in for the 2nd one and the Jeep had consumed a quart of oil for just 500 miles. I asked if this was excessive and the girl told me not really, I've seen this. How can I take this car on a road trip if it is going to consume 1 quart of oil every 500 miles!!! My car is 3 1/2 years old it only has 32,000 miles on it and I have to do this! This car is not driven hard.

I work 10 miles from my home. It’s rarely driven on the highway. This is ridiculous!! Totally frustrated. They told me if they deem it that’s it’s burning too much oil that they’ll replace the engine. But from what I’ve been reading they’re replacing it with the same engine. This is not an appropriate fix!!

Cherokee 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 128,000 miles

My jeep is using excessive amount of oil, making it low on oil every other week. And the oil light is not coming on as well. Today it started stalling when I was driving, leaving me on the side of the road. I get it back to the house and it is low on oil yet again, without any lights coming on. Something is wrong - a car this new should not be using this much oil, or stalling on me in the middle of a highway.

Cherokee Sport 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 38,000 miles

Car ran out of oil at ~5K miles after having served at the dealers. They told me it is a known problem with Cherokees: Excessive Oil Consumption. Then why do they keep selling them!!!!!

My car completely stalled as I was going to enter the ramp to the I10. It could have been very bad if it happened once I entered the I10. I had my 1 year old with me in the scorching hot sun of Tucson Arizona waiting for a tow truck.

They are doing oil consumption tests now on my vehicle. This is the second one. The first one they said the consumption looked normal. Then why in the world did my car run out of oil?

Makes dinging sounds when turning right or left, Car dies out when making turns , no oil on dip stick, need to constantly add oil about every two weeks, have taken to dealership and they told me that is just the way that these jeeps are.... and that I need to keep checking the oil consumption, just doesn’t seem right, I always had high expectations for jeep, but now I am not to sure anymore, especially when I found out that a lot of people are going through the same issue and Jeep is aware of it and not recalling these vehicles

Cherokee 4cl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 24,700 miles

I'm homeless in the 2017 JEEP Latitude only 24,700 miles. It's to keep up my good credit and car payments, insurance, credit card payments etc. I use to make $100K/year as Engineering Recruiter on SVP budgets for Fortune 500/1000 companies. Went unemployed. Now working minimum wadge telemarketing jobs. I'm considered "overqualified" for a real Corp JOB again. I work out and look younger. Really take care of myself to keep healthy. However, I can get a minimum wage job which even kids won't take. Corporate jr. recruiters won't submit me for corp recruiting job. Now, jr. recruiters obtain resumes from other recruiters who could take their jobs. My resume use to be submitted to Directors of HR or VP's and I was hired right away.

I hate this car. It's causing me so much stress. I use to drive good cars. Never these problems until at least 50K miles you start to have a few issues. Never bought a Chrysler before and NEVER will again.

If the problems persist I'm putting a BIG SIGN ON THE BACK OF CAR STATING: "PROBLEMS WITH CHRYSLER JEEP CHEROKEE LATITUDE / ENGINE OIL & TRANSMISSION - DO NOT BUY THIS CAR"

I needed this car more than any car - ever. Chrysler keeps messing with my life and I'll ensure I mess with there's by MAKING THIS PUBLIC WITH A SIGN ON MY CAR. So their sales will go down.

I bought new 2017 Jeep Cherokee Latitude. The oil to be changed every 5,000 miles. My car would knock at 4,000. I had the oil changed early at 4,000. The dealership never advised there wasn't any oil. But, after oil changed at 4,000 miles the car wouldn't knock any more.

In 10/2018 I started the car. The automatic transmission wouldn't go into drive or reverse. I shut off the car and restarted. Then, it worked. I drove down the street and car stopped and wouldn't restart. Wouldn't shift gears. Someone pushed me over to the side. I stopped car and it restarted. I drove to work about 7 minutes away (I found a place to park close to work and save gas and miles on car - to preserve my car as long as possible to get my life back in order). The transmission light was on while driving to work. After work the transmission light wasn't on any more. However, while turning corners the oil light came on. I wasn't to have an oil change for another 1,000 miles. I checked and there was zero oil in the car. Went to dealership. They re-filled oil.

I'm loosing a quart of oil every 1,000 miles.

If I don't have this car then I'll have no where to sleep and loose my JOB, credit and everything. My parents were spoiled rotten and spent their parents family fortune. Were spoiled. I don't speak to them as cruel people.

In 1,000 more miles to have oil change. Then, stated they'll perform consumption test and I'm to drive for 1,000 miles to see how much oil loss.

Never, in my life of 40 years while driving all new cars have I ever had problems with new car. When, I need this car the most. I don't need more hassles creating problems preventing me from getting on with my life.

Also, started my own staffing business on side to pay my way through retirement. If others won't hire me I'll hire myself.

I will put a huge sign on the car if this causes me more stress and time - to warn others.

Cherokee Latitude Anniversery 3.2L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 10,000 miles

My husband noticed about 3 weeks after one of my oil change, that there was oil on my air filter. So I took my truck back to the dealership. They told me it was oil from the technitians hands and it was nothing. Ok, I will change my air filter next oil change to seeif its oil from the tech.

At my next oil change, I asked them to change my air filter even though it really did not need it. This way I had a clean one for my test. When I got home my husband looked at it to make sure it was clean it was. I drove like normal till my next oil change, and my husband looked at the filter before I took it in. There was oil on my filter, we took pictures of it and I took it to the service department. They told me it was normal for there to be some oil on the air filter. I don't think there should ever be oil coming through your air system.

Update: 3 weeks later my oil change light came on, so I took it to the dealer and they just reset my meter, didn't check anything.

Update: Driving to Texas for Christmas my check engine light came one. Now remember I changed my oil about 2000 miles ago and also took my truck in for change oil light after I had it changed, after reading that everyone is having oil problems we checked the oil. Yup, our oil was low. So we added oil but so far has not helped. It's 4 am so no dealerships are open. :(

Cherokee Limited 2.4L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 6,970 miles

Car was purchased new May of 2017. Now 10 months old, (6,960 miles) Jeep dinging at random, no warning lights or messages noticed on dash. Prior to this (approx. 6,500 miles) we called the dealer to see what the oil change warning would be ,the owners manual was not helpful, (in the past we changed the oil every 3000 miles on other cars). We were told that the car would tell us on the dash when an oil change was due.

At 6,990 miles the car stalled, 2 tries later it started. There were no visible warning lights.

Called the dealer to get it checked out and to go ahead and change the oil also. We were told by service that the oil dipstick was dry. They were aware of a problem with another customer that this particular engine has had problems with excessive oil consumption and their engine was replaced after 2 months of documentation with Chrysler. We will have to take the car in every 1,000 miles for documentation (looking for engine scoring) for Chrysler to move forward with this problem.

Our annoyance is if Chrysler/Jeep has been aware of this problem for two years at least, why are they still selling these vehicles and there is no recall. Are there not enough injuries or deaths to get their attention?? Do they just say "Sorry about your Luck ! " ( If you were a patient in the operating room would you want that motto ? OOPS, sorry about your luck !!) There is nothing shown for Our inconvenience. This makes us feel that we have a new car with limited sense of confidence to drive it.. Chrysler/Jeep needs to show us that they care about this problem.

Update from Mar 14, 2018: Car stalled while driving.

Update from Sep 10, 2018: After several trips back for service the engine was replaced in May. It is now September and the car is going back in due to oil consumption on the 2nd engine. Buyer beware 2.4 liter engines!

Brand New 2017 Jeep Cherokee - with less than 5000 miles on it. The oil light started coming on! - Dealership stated that they would change the oil and monitor. Here I am at 7200 miles and the light is on again! The dip stick shows barely any oil! (NO OIL LEAKS ARE PRESENT)

Can't believe a low mileage, brand new engine is burning that much oil - UHGHHH ---Back to the dealership!
