Grand Cherokee Limited Diesel

  • Automatic transmission
  • 5,000 miles

I have had my 2014 Diesel Jeep Grand Cherokee in the shop twice in the last year for what I will call a shuttering problem. The first time I took my Jeep in it had approximately 5,000 miles on it. When I accelerated to around 45 miles an hour my Jeep would start to shutter and shake. I would have to either let up off the gas or give it more gas.

I took it into the dealership and they said they had a fix for it. They said it was a software update. I picked my Jeep up and everything seemed good for awhile. I now have approximately 15,000 miles on my vehicle and it started doing the shutter shaking thing again. No specific mile range and does not do it all of the time. It gets really scary when you are on the freeway.

I took my vehicle back to the dealership last week and they had it for a couple days. They said there were new software updates. So they did the software updates and I took my Jeep home. It is now 4 days later and my vehicle is doing the same thing. Has anyone out there had this problem and actually had it fixed and what was the fix?

Grand Cherokee Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 8,300 miles

The Jeep is back yet again for the 4th time with a jerky transmission and shift points between 2nd and 3rd and 3rd and 4th gear. Since the dealership thinks I am making the 45 minute drive to their garage for my own enjoyment, they insisted the car was operating as designed and that I should come back the following morning to test drive it with their tech.

I obliged and yet again had to rearrange my work schedule to accommodate my ill fated Jeep. I went in and barely pulled out of the parking lot of the dealership with the tech and the car slammed into gear. The tech and service manager looked absolutely stunned that there was a problem with the Jeep..... SERIOUSLY? So they have had it now for almost a week on their final repair attempt, and they informed me that they were replacing the transmission valve body. This caps off 22 days in the shop with 7 repairs since I purchased the Jeep back in November of 2014.

I will NEVER buy another Chrysler product. Their customer service is horrendous and their vehicle quality control for a 45k Jeep is inferior. I have owned 6 cars in my lifetime and have never had this many problems. Such a shame that a nice vehicle like the jeep has to be plagued with so many problems. Will be picking up the Jeep tomorrow, hope its fixed, otherwise they are out of tries and need to comply with Lemon Law.

Grand Cherokee Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 7,600 miles

Car went back to the dealer for the 3rd time and they again updated the software. The useless Chrysler Customer Advocate finally returned my call with perhaps the worst excuse she could think up. Car spent several days at the dealership only for them to inform me it was operating as designed and that it was ready to be picked up.

SO I picked up the car and it was again not fixed. It continued to slam into 3rd and 4th gear until the vehicle was warmed up. This can't be good for the transmission. So after going back and forth with the dealership and the useless customer advocate, I notified Chrysler of my intention to file Lemon Law if the vehicle wasn't fixed in 7 days. Will update my 4th complaint with those details.

Grand Cherokee Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 7,000 miles

This is now the SECOND time I had my vehicle in for rough shifting/banging sensation from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th gear. This happens the first few miles during the day and has become increasingly annoying. The dealership again updated the software and road tested vehicle and informed me that the problem was all fixed. It WASN'T.

I then contacted Chrysler customer care which was perhaps the biggest waste of my time. The girl I spoke with basically tried to make me feel like I was being listened to and that she was there to help.... Once I told her I would again take the vehicle in and work with Chrysler to resolve the problem, she stopped returning my calls and refused to answer her phone. Nice customer advocate huh?? So again I was left to take my vehicle back for a 3rd time to try and resolve my transmission problem.

This problem first began on my way to work. I started the car and drove it as normal only to find out it was shifting hard from 2nd to 3rd gear and 3rd to 4th. This would happen for the first few miles of the day and then gradually dissipate. I addressed this problem with my dealer and they completed a software update. This was the first time I took the vehicle in for transmission problems and I hoped it would be the last. I WAS WRONG. The problem continued.

Grand Cherokee Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 2,500 miles

The transmission shifts gears and the vehicle jerks to the right. The dealership said they would get with the factory engineers and let me know what they can do. I never heard back from the dealership and don't expect to get the vehicle fixed. I notice right after a fuel up it shifts different. I paid the dealership what they wanted for the vehicle and expect to get what I want from a vehicle. I think they should fix the vehicle or replace the vehicle. My money is good, so the vehicle should also be good.

Update from Jul 6, 2015: I contacted the BBB and they are confident the dealership has made an honest attempt at fixing the vehicle. Yeah right. I contacted the Chrysler corporation and they have opened up a case, they are trying to fix the vehicle. It has been in the shop for 4 weeks now and still not sure they will find the problem. I have contacted an Attorney just in case they don't fix it this time, i will follow through with filing a LEMON LAW claim with Chrysler. Louisiana Lemon Law is in my favor. They are Liable for all Attorney fees and reimbursement what I paid for the vehicle.

I will keep it simple, the 2014 Jeep Gran Cherokee a Limited is a disgrace and should be removed from service before it kills someone. I have had it in the stinking dealerships shop on 3 occasions with the same problem. Now it has to go back to the dealership for the 4th time for the same reason. Only now the problem has gotten 10 times worse. They have re-flashed the piece of trash 4 times and it has only gotten progressively worse.

In traffic is completely unreliable because your not sure if it's going to move once you apply the accelerator. Also I would not recommend passing another vehicle unless there's plenty of room and no other traffic. The engine is also struggling trying to provide the power necessary to complete a pass.

Again I repeat the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a accident waiting to happen if it hasn't already happen to others. If this vehicle isn't fixed this time I'm going file a lemon law complaint against this vehicle. I am 100% Chrysler is aware of this problem and they have been accused of rushing these vehicles to market knowing there were issues with the engines and transmission.

Has anyone else experienced the same problem with their Grand Cherokees Engine and Transmission and if so what has Chrysler did for them to correct the issue. I can never trust this vehicle again with mine and my families safety.

Grand Cherokee Limited V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 6,000 miles

I have had my 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee into the dealership numerous times with jerking when shifting and accelerating when going to the higher gear. The problem is between mainly 3 and 4 gears. They have FLASH the computer and have preformed numerous quik learn test to have the motor adapt. I have been told so many times they can't duplicate the problem. But when I insisted that a technician ride with me and he verified it was jerking during up shifting and downshifting. They finally took me seriously, ( I guess because I a female I am I don't the mechanical knowledge to know when a car is properly shifting).

They have replaced the valve body and the car run like a new for 4 1/2 months until the car lock in 3rd gear and the engine light came on and they had to tow the car to their shop. Now their solution is to trade the car in and I am suppose to get them another $11,000 on a car with 14400 miles on it that looks like a better than the one on the show floor. I submitted Certified letter to Chrysler in September 2014 and they started work on promptly.

So now I am going to send another Certified requesting a total refund as Alaska has Lemon Law to be paid within 60 days and I will file with the Consumer Protection Agency for investigation. I advise everyone to contact their local Consumer Protection Agency and file a complaint. I personally would like to know how many other buyers have had this issue and I will present to my attorney if I have to go that route.

Under 4000 miles and when stopping at a traffic light I was slowly coming to a stop and just before coming to a complete stop it felt like a car behind me bumped me, but there was no car behind me.

After the second time it happened I started paying close attention to see if it was reproducible. It doesn't always happen why I try to reproduce it but it is regular.

It isn't like a hard downshift from 2nd to 1st, because that would be like hitting something, and your head would go forward. This is like a brief moment of neutral then back into gear, like a car behind you bumped you, and your head goes back.

shifting problems

Third time to the shop with issue. First time, couldn't find the problem. Second time, said was a sensor for the crank shaft. Now this morning, jerked 3 times in a row when in 3rd gear and the check engine light came on. Makes me regret ever buying a Jeep. Under six months old, less than 6k miles and nothing but issues. Going back to Honda or Toyota, car was 7 years old and never had issues.

Update from Mar 8, 2015: Error code was DTC p0733 shifting error for third gear. Car has the most up to date software and jeep dealer says they can't do anything because the code wasn't reoccurring.... Not reoccurring happens everyday. Oh well will be back at the shop in a week .... Going to start looking into the lemon law.

Update from Mar 16, 2015: UPDATE: Went to dealership that Saturday. said code was DTC P0733. (miss shift 3rd gear), but the problem wasn't ongoing so they couldn't do anything and that i had the most current software and sent me home. Said having AAA wouldn't be a BAD IDEA... SERIOUSLY!? Car bucked 3 more times that week, but no light came on so I went to dealership Saturday.... said i needed software and that there were more codes (not provided). Did software update even though other guys said I did not need the update. Left the dealership and car bucked 2x since Saturday.. Called corporate jeep to start lemon law case. this is insane 2014 jeep that i have to worry about breaking down in. NEVER BUYING A JEEP AGAIN.

Grand Cherokee Limited 3.2L V6

I purchased my first 2014 Grand Cherokee in April of 2013. At about 6000 miles it developed a hard "thunk" down shift from 2nd to 1st gear in slow stop town driving. Took it to the dealership, computer adjustments were made and fixed problem for a short time...but would return. This problem existed about 60-65% of time.

After several attempts to fix the problem I said I wanted a replacement vehicle at no cost to me and had one special ordered to match the exact specifications I originally purchased. When the vehicle came in I discovered that it would cost me as if I were trading in the vehicle. I consulted an attorney for using the lemon law but was informed that the Tennessee lemon states that charges (mileage) can be instituted in calculating the value of the vehicle being "traded in" and that a new vehicle at no cost was not going to happen. Reluctantly I accepted the "deal" the dealership and Chrysler put before me because I was afraid of what might happen in a few years.

I purchased my 2nd Jeep Grand Cherokee in June of 2014 and everything was great...but now at 6,500 miles, this 2nd vehicle is beginning to experience the same problem. Not sure what to do now...seems this is how it's going to be and I don't want to spend the time and inconvenience required to attempt a fix when I have no confidence in it being alleviated. I have owned 6 Jeeps and have never had this kind of a problem...it will be my last one...unless Jeep/Chrysler gets off their butts and comes up with a bonafide solution. Can not suggest this Jeep to anyone.

Continual shifting problems, would downshift out of no where or would stick in one gear. Had software update. No immediate change but improved, but not solved after 3000 miles. Vehicle has many more problems and after 8 months of going thru the channels got a re-purchase agreement from Chrysler with absolutely no help from dealer. Check lemon laws for your state, save work orders, service shop likes to use "unable to duplicate" on issues that are erratic . Make notes with dates and conditions when problem occurs. Get statement from passengers, videotape when possible. On the surveys you are asked to fill out there is a number to contact for a consumer advocate. Ours refereed us to another dealership for service, they kept the vehicle for a week, gave us a rental and were more competent than our dealership. Plus it is good to go thru the hoops in case you do qualify for a lemon law.

You have to send certified letter to Chrysler. We did and were contacted by the regional service manager that test drove the vehicle and said we could wait for "New software updates that were being developed" or buyback. We chose buyback and then we're ignored until we got the Chrysler arbitration involved. If you are approved for arbitration a hearing is usually set up within three weeks. Now for the real news ..after 6 months of waiting and proving we do have legitimate problems..a week before our hearing, we get a call from Chrysler ready to move forward with the re-purchase. Then it took six weeks to get check. It is time consuming and you need to be detailed and professional because they are just trying to frustrate you to the point of not going thru with it.

This car jerks when it shifts. It's most noticeable in start/stop traffic. I'm worried that I will be jerked forward into an accident. Also, when braking, the car jerks as it gears down. At first I thought it might be a brake problem but then I noticed the jerking coincided with the gears going either up or down.

Almost immediately since new, the car will stop shifting, usually between 2nd and 3rd or 3rd and 4th, but occasionally at highway speeds, between 7th and 8th (or Drive). It can occur several times a day or not for a week or two. It has spend way too long and too often in the shop, and at this point, the dealer is grasping at strays, even to the point of suggesting that they send it to another dealer, perhaps; with additional skills. When it occurs, usually, but not always, the easiest way to cure the issue is to stop and restart the vehicle. Sometimes this creates a rather dangerous situation. The dealer is at the point where it's obvious he's grasping at straws. At this point, we're reluctant to use the vehicle for anything other than local driving, since it often goes into a limp mode making it difficult to do anything other than struggle to the dealer. We love the Jeep, but this one has lost our confidence and we're afraid to go anywhere, which is intolerable.

Grand Cherokee Laredo 3.6L V6

  • Automatic transmission

I am having the same issue as other owners of this vehicle. It is related to the transmission and how awful it shifts, especially when cold. We got the car in the summer and everything was smooth and we really liked how the Jeep drove...hence we got it even at a premium price compared to other similarly sized competitors. The problem is when the transmission gets cold...like say in the winter the shifting becomes extremely rough. We have talked to two different dealerships in town and they said we should expect rough shifting when it's cold outside. They said that it was because of the "clutches" inside of the transmission. What a load of bull.

We did finally take it in to the dealership because of yet another recall and almost had to force them to look at the transmission. Since they said it's normal to shift rough they didn't even want to bother "looking into it". Of course they found one of these software upgrades which did nothing and they flashed the memory. Another thing they told us was that this is a "learning" transmission and that depending on our driving habits it could cause the transmission to shift differently depending on which one of us were driving it. Another wonder load of bull. Then I finally called Chrysler themselves to see if I could get someone on the phone that would have knowledge of this to verify. Of course they would not let me talk to anyone and eventually just said they needed to assist other customers because there wasn't anything they could do for us. I was so disgusted with the treatment by Chrysler this will definitely be the last one I ever own...without a doubt.

I then started searching and this ZF 8 speed transmission and found it is used all over the place, including almost every single automatic BMW (of course tuned by BMW or ZF, not Chrysler). Take a wild guess if any of those other vehicles have this terrible shifting problem....this at least confirmed that it's not a transmission design problem but a Chrysler programming problem of the transmission problem. Hopefully they are actually working on it and will have a real update but I won't hold my breath since they don't stand behind their products. I guess it should surprise me since Grand Cherokees have always been known to have terrible transmission. Shame on me I guess for thinking they had actually made a good vehicle.

shifting problems

Starting around 3K miles, this would be the 7th time the transmission had locked up and the "MIL" (Malfunction Indicator Light) had come on, and the 1st since the transmission valve pump box was replaced. Since than the MIL has come on 2 more times and the #Jeep transmission has locked up (will not go into reverse.) The only way to get the transmission to work is to turn the vehicle off and on again. Eventually the MIL usually goes off but will always come back eventually with the locked transmission. In addition to this fun issue, after the #Jeep had been repaired by #Zimmer motors, it came back with a ding on the front hood and a scratch on the rear driver side fender. Seeing the the vehicle had been driven over 60miles but the service team one can only presume it happened during the "retraining of the transmission". Though according to Jeep documentation the retraining should not take nearly that many miles to accomplish. As well the exhausts regeneration, which up until now we'd never seen (we drive on the highway frequently), has come on 2x's in less than 70miles and 6 days apart. Up until the second cleaning the car fumes were so bad the windows and to be rolled down or you'd risk sever headaches and cough. #Zimmer had also incorrectly replaced the underbelly skid & kick plates while also forgetting one bolt. Needless to say we will not be buying another Jeep anytime soon and this one is going back for another long servicing to #ZimmerMotors in Florence KY. The only reason we are taking it back is we are trying to negotiate a replacement for this Lemon in hopes of a better built non-lemon Jeep GC. Wish us luck.

P.S. the transmission has never shifted like it did new after the repair, even after additional software updates, when new this car was a dream to drive, now we dread it...

P.P.S. Chrysler CAIR program rep has been no help and will not share her records or return calls any more, we have not been insulting, rude or in anyway difficult, but when we requested a copy of all the records all communication stopped.

The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 8 speed transmission is by far the worst vehicle I've ever owned. Mainly because the customer service at the dealers is terrible when compared to GM and Ford. We have the issues where the first 3 gears shift very hard and it actually jerks like the transmission is slipping.

I took it to the dealer and they said there was nothing wrong with it that's just the way it is. The is insulting my intelligence. I've been driving cars for 22 years. I even travel for work and rent cars every week. This is a problem it is not something that is normal. Passenger in my Jeep even make comments that it shifts hard. Its very annoying and because Jeep denies there is an issue and we are ready to keep taking it the dealer until its fixed or covered under the lemon law.

I will never buy another Jeep again. Fix this issue or lose many customers. I would even be willing to get involved in a class action law suit.
