Liberty Sport 3.7L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 92,000 miles

Approximately six months ago my 2002 Liberty started a ticking in the engine and progressively got louder...I work in an auto parts store and deal with commercial mechanics everyday. In the beginning it was suggested that it may be a lifter. It never lost power nor did a check engine light come on. I let it go for lack of funds. Not to mention no loss of power or performance. I never drove it far or on long trips, so there really wasn't a driving problem, just a really annoying noise. I bought this Jeep with only 27,000 miles on it in 2002. It has 91500 on it now...I loved everything about this Jeep and I recently took it for a short ride (x-mas eve) but longer then usual since the ticking started about 20 miles away and at 55-65 mph. Well, lets just say that it was awful, it just bogged down, choked , hiccuped, gagged, check engine light flashing like the 4th of July. It made it, but barely. It just started missing really bad. The codes read out number 3 and 5 cylinder, one of my guys changed those 2 plugs and coil packs. Not missing as bad but still a bit I can drive it, but its shutting off now and then when letting up on the gas. The plugs had oil on them. Just waiting to take it to my mechanic (holiday), to get looked at it and after reading your complaints....apparently its not looking too good for me. But I have to wonder....This Jeep for 10 years has caused me no major problems...I replaced the radiator this year and I do need a new condensor and outside of 2 batteries and 1 brake hose.... everything else is original...belts, plugs, coil packs, starter, alternator etc..outside of my faded plastic bumpers..there is not a speck of rust on it. My mechanic who owns and works on Jeeps thinks it will need a new engine. I'm hoping its a head...$300 apposed to $3000....Wish me luck next wednesday..pop goes the valve cover and we will see.

Service vehicle every 3500 miles or 4 months, Uncle retired from Chrysler, he himself was visiting just one month prior to failure and could not beleive how clean this car is. And the low mileage meant I would hang on to this nice car for a long time... Then from no where the engine noise started.... pulled the intake manifold off found valve seat material all inside intake manifold... Called Chrysler and told them my story and ask if they would consider any help. The lady at the Chysler 888 or 800 number I was given from the dealer told me since I touched a wrench to the car they would not even consider any consideration or help. I explained I bought the car new one owner vehicle and have three other Chrysler products in my driveway right now.....and the Jeep Liberty has less than 80000 miles on it..She advised me nothing Chysler can do... Dont think any New Chysler product will be in my drive way ever again.... Tried them once,, engines dont last more than 80000 and while rebuilding this one found out Im not the only one with the valve or valve seat damage issue. Wonder how many sales this is costing them. Adapt and over come and bypass Chylser products. Onward to the future.

Where shall I begin? Oh yes, on top of the many problems that I have had with this vehicle this is by far one of the worst. Get up in the morning ready to go to work, start the jeep and it starts jumping and making a sound as if it were misfiring. Also, the check engine light was flashing. I immediately shut the engine off. Started the engine, fired right up and drove normally all the way to work. To make a long story short, when the engine is cold is when this happens. However, the problem has gotten progressively worse. I have replaced both the Cam and Crankshaft positioning sensors. I went ahead and bought the Throttle Positioning Sensor to see if that will correct the problem. I used to love my jeep and in a way I wish I still could. I just simply do not make enough money to continuously pour money into it.
