LS 400

  • Automatic transmission
  • 120,000 miles

For those who aren't aware, this is an extremely common issue on the LS400 for the 1990-1994 Model year. The cause of this problem is due to the bad capacitors on the circuit boards for the Instrument Cluster. There are various sites discussing the problem and the solution. If you go into Google and type in "LS400 Instrument Cluster", you'll find many results. To save you the trouble, I'll link to some sites that cover this issue.

To summarize what the solution to the problem is, it is this: The instrument cluster has to be removed and the capacitors on the circuit board need to be replaced. The dealership will usually suggest to just buy a new instrument cluster for $1000 but that never solves the issue as they too have this issue. The only solution to this problem is to repair the instrument cluster.

LS 400 4.0L V8

  • Automatic transmission
  • 170,000 miles

The display which shows the temperature has gone bad, this has actually affected the heating system of the car so now if you want to turn the heater on it will not work properly. It's an expensive unit to cost at least around $1000 dollars. It is a luxury car, so it's irritating to have something like this happen even if it is old.

the dash lights never come on. the tachometer and speedometer seldom work, even when the dash lights used to come on (rarely) considering the price of this car when new this is unforgiveable. i would think twice before considering another Lexus, or any vehicle with a digital dash!! nuff said?

Dash lights won't come on until car warms up. Worse in winter than summer. Sometimes takes 20 or 30 minutes for car to get warm enough for lights to come on then they flicker for quite some time until they illuminate constantly. Local Lexus dealer has tried to find problem several times with no luck. Does anyone out there have any idea what is wrong?
