Upon hearing about the tire recall, I went to mertz Ford where I purchased my vehicle for inspection. I was told my tires weren't on the recall list. As additional news reports continued, we inspected the tires ourselves to find a crack at the treadline that ran around the outside perimeter of all four tires. I returned to the dealer and was told by their sales manager that something needed to be done as the tires were not safe. We returned when the service dept. Was open and were again told they would work something out. After the vehicle had been dropped off, we received a call indicating that we would need to pay for all 4 new tires (replaced with Goodyear Wrangler rt/S (tires, labor, tax: $379.01). I kept the defective tires and my receipt. I don't know how Firestone can maintain that tires manufactured only at the Decatur plant are the unsafe tires for the recall. I want Firestone to reimburse me for my total expenditures. (dot number: Vnhl1py506 tiresize: P235/75R15)

Left front tire on the inside and right front tire on the outside.....the belts are broke on both tires and are coming through the tread. Wire is sticking out of tires and is causing the front end of vechicle to wobble. The tires are too the point where they are unsafe to drive on. I have the exact tire that is being recalled, the same brand and size but because it was not made in the Decatur Illinois plant, my tires are not being replaced. I have a 18 month old baby and every time that I have to drive my vehicle I constantly wonder if my tires will burst, causing an accident or a death. I believe that my tires should be included in this recall or at least be replaced. (dot number: W2hl426 tiresize: P235/75R15)

When we purchased this vehicle these tires were on them the first one blew coming down a mountain and I was lucky that there was a turn off so that I could change it. That one was replaced on Jan 19 1999 with another Firestone wilderness and the other front tire in September of 1999 at montgomery wards with Wrangler rt. Then on May 31, 2000 I had to replace the back 2 again with Wrangler rt's. this was do to the tires all shredding and pealing like an onion. Luckily no one was hurt. Each time this happened my vehicle was knocked out of alignment and had to be realigned besides having the tires replaced. Am I eligible for reimbursement for all tires. I kept getting told by the dealer that it was due to heat.... (dot number: P235 tiresize: 75rx15)

Dear sir or madam, I have a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer with at tires that are not part of the recall. I took my vechile to firestones service center and they said that they show the same type of wear as the recalled tires and should be replaced but since they are not part of the recall I would have to pay a prorated amount for replacements. I do not think that I should have to pay for replacements if they are showing the same problems as the recalled ones.I am on there list waiting for replacementsbut I think someone needs to.( dot number: Vnhl tire size: 23575R15 )

This defect involves sidewall deterioration and abnormal wear. The car was bought with 35000mi and immediately they started wearing. In June the first two started losing air between the base of the tread & sidewall. In early July the other 2 followed suit. We replaced all 4 tires with B.F. goodrich with an lt rating. Also, tire pressure was kept at 30psi instead of 26 at all times.( dot number: Unknown tire size: P23575R15 )

Original tires on a Mercury, mountineer 1997. There was a small piece of concrete in the road, not a huge piece.consumer had to run over it to avoid an accident, and the left front tire completely came apart. Burst and started to delalminate as other problem tires have. The dealer called it a road hazard and the customer paid for the replacement.

These tires are in good shape however will not hold air pressure I have been filling them every night and by the next morning they will all have lost 2-4 lbs of pressure. How can Firestone say that only the ones manufactured in Decatur ill are defective? I have contacted Ford and Firestone as well and been told these tires do not have a problem. I disagree.( dot number: Wd tire size: P235R15 )

PE00020, bought used on a 1997 Mountaineer, P235/75R15, dot W2hl1py. All four tires are "dry rotten" and have a cracked from the edge of the tread, and where the sidewall meets, which may cause tread to come off in all the same spot. Also, while driving it has been more bouncing. The customer wants Firestone to pay the replacement cost for failed tires.

We bought our Mercury Mountaineer in January, 1998 (mfgd in April, 1997) serial #[xxx] and within the first year we noticed the sidewall and tire tread was peeling from the tire. We brought this to the dealer's attention (hatfield's Lincoln Mercury located in columbus, oh) and they dismissed it. We told them the SUV vibrated and rumbled and rode very, very rough. They said to rotate the tires. It continued to do it and continues to this day (9/13/00). We have had the tires rotated many times. We are very much concerned about this situation and follow the news releases closely since the tire recall. We have had much trouble with these tires and the garage continuously dismissed our concerns. We travel cross country at posted speeds and throughout the southwest frequently. We have now moved to albuquerque, nm, and are even more concerned since it is hot weather and desert area. We continue to have rumble and vibration in the tires. We went to a Firestone dealer to check the dot code and he said they were W2. We checked with another location and they said the same, W2. However, as we have always believed, the peeling is very evident including the tread layer. We are uncomfortable with these facts. We believe a further investigation should be conducted and our tires recalled as well. Should anything horrible happen, it would be a terrible travesty of justice. We feel Firestone is responsible and Ford and the NHTSA should hold them as such.( dot number: W2 tire size: P235/75R15 ). information redacted pursuant to the Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

Upon inspection by my auto mechanic, I was informed today that my right front tire was near imediate failure from seperation of the tread from the tire casing and that the two rear tires were also near failure. I called my dealer and they stated that they will not involve themselves with tires that are not part of a recall. I must replace the tires tommorrow for the safety of my family. Please secure the safety of other families by alerting the public of the present dangers. Recall or not, get these tires off the road.( dot number: Vnhl tire size: P2357515 )
