Altima S 2.5L

  • CVT transmission
  • 68,000 miles

2014 Altima S, love the car. I didn't do my research on the Jatco brand CVT that Nissan uses, and all of the problems they have had, when I had purchased the car. I have driven it for 4 years and never had to take it in for a repair. I just recently started getting idle speeds anywhere from 600-1700 rpms when the car is started. The tachometer still bounces all over under smooth acceleration while driving. I can feel definite loss of power while accelerating and feel the cvt struggle. While stopped in Drive, with the brake depressed, I can hear a metal grinding noise from the bottom of the engine area. This car only Blue books around $6500-$7,500 these days so, why pay the cost to repair or replace the CVT just to have the planned obsolescence kick my ass again?

Jatco makes CVT transmissions for Nissan, Mitsubishi, Jeep, Suzuki, Infiniti qx60 and Dodge caliber. After reading all the terrible stories on places like nissanforums.com about these transmissions failing,( one which was replaced 4 times while still under the power train warranty!!) I am staying away from Nissan, and anything using Jatco's transmissions.

There was a recall for the CVT sensor in the 14 Altima but, having that done made no changes to these problems. What I don't understand is that with the amount of complaints about this transmission failure, how has NHTSA not forced Nissan to recall these things??(other than the obvious$$$$)

The previous generation Altima had transmission problems and Nissan was forced to extend the factory power-train warranty to 100,000 mi, so what gives?

I've' seen plenty of pictures and videos on the inside of these things, and it is amazing how small and brittle the metal belts are that just get bent up and ripped to shreds when it fails. The way the bearings wear out the shafts is crazy. It definitely seems there is a design flaw that needs to be addressed.

Altima 3.2L

  • CVT transmission
  • 72,000 miles

Every time I drive more than a couple hours the car starts acting up and hesitates when I hit the accelerator. This has been ongoing for months, so I have been limiting my driving to mostly just work and local because of it. It was so bad that when I went to New York a few months ago that when I was at a stop light and the light turned green and I hit the gas and the car only moved a few feet which put me directly in the middle of traffic in a 4 way intersection. When the lights changed I was stuck with traffic having to drive around me. It was dangerous and embarrassing. I found when this happens I have to pull over and shut the car off for 20 minutes or more and then it works for a while and then it happens again. I had to turn the car off 3 times just to get home. It was frightening. I could have been injured and this could have turned into a multi-car accident being stuck in the middle of a 4 way intersection. I never got a notice from the dealer about it so is there a recall or fix that will be done and if yes how do I go about getting it done?
