I have always owned a Pontiac. however i have never had a car that the steering has had as many problems as this one. I had started hearing a clunking sound when turning and it has progressed to the power steering light displaying on the radio and the engine light coming on. the steering wheel jerks back and forth while sitting still. the steering locks up at various times and the only way i have found to fix it is to pull over and shut off the car. while driving down the road the wheel tries to yank to the right. I hope that Pontiac sees that there is a HUGE problem here and it needs to be recalled ASAP!!!

I've been hearing a pooping sound in the wheel. I called a mechanic to ask him what he thinks and he's told me to come to this site to report it. I also see a lot of people complaining about this. It's been making this sound for awhile. Then last night I stopped to get something to eat and went to get back in my car and the wheel wouldn't turn so I had a gentleman help me and he told me I didn't need to drive it that if it goes out I will wreck and I would have no steering. Why have they not recalled this? I see a lot of people having the same problem. I need to know who to get a hold of to get this fixed ...... I could have been killed and I see other people have had wrecks and been seriously hurt ... help, what can we do about this?

My girlfriend was an owner of a 2006 Pontiac G6 for over 1 (one) year. During this time, like many of you , she experienced the failure of her power steering on many occasions. Recently, I was involved in a very serious accident due to the failure of the power steering on her car.

While driving about 55 mph, I approached a curve and braked slightly. While entering the curve the power steering froze, and I could not turn momentarily. The power steering came back on and I over compensated for the loss of steering. I spun out of control, hitting an embankment with my rear wheel. The car flipped and landed on its wheels. I went to the hospital with a PARTIALLY COLLAPSED LUNG, BRUISED RIBS, BRUISED STERNUM, BACK INJURY , AND NECK INJURIES.

I have consulted with several attorney on the matter, and they all say that they only pursue product liability cases where the plantiff has suffered death or near death injuries. Although I was lucky not to be very seriously injured , I am injured.

While doing research online , I noticed that my girlfriend was not alone in experiencing this issue. I located many G6 owner complaints on several websites and blogs online. As some of you are aware, GM has not officially recalled the vehicle , but has only issued a “service upgrade“ on the vehicle’s warranty. This is a very dangerous issue that must be acknowledged by GM, before more people are injured, or worse. By law, Pontiac/GM is required to notify owners when a defect affects the safe operation of a vehicle.

I intend to write all present and former 2006 Pontiac G6 owners that I can locate in order to get a formal written description of your experiences with the power steering issue on the 2006 Pontiac G6.

Please contact me by email at newglobalgroup@gmail.com , so we can come together and get some type of results from Pontiac/GM.

On the day after Thanksgiving my granddaughter an I got into the Pontiac g6 and I was unable to turn the steering wheel. The power steering had locked up. Thankfully we were not on the highway when this occurred. I took my vehicle to a gm dealer and they guaranteed me that the problem had been taken care of. Ten minutes later I went to park the car and the same thing happened again. The gm service manager said that they would have to replace the power steering column. As of today we have not got the vehicle back. I will never feel safe in this vehicle again.

I was driving on the far right lane on the interstate at approx. 60mph. A car had cut me off, and I jerked the car to the left to avoid the accident, but as I did that the car totally lost control. I tried to turn the wheel towards the right to correct and it felt like the wheel was stuck going left. It was out of my control. I couldn't do anything! With the wheel stuck going left, the car spun out across 3 lanes (luckily not hitting anyone). Once I realized that the car was not responding, I braced myself for impact and it finally crashed into the cement median: car facing oncoming traffic. I was left in complete shock as other cars and semi-'s were passing me. Never have I been left completely powerless while driving. Now facing $10,000 worth of damages. But why should I pay for a faulty product?? I could have gotten seriously injured.

Previous time to this accident I had heard a dinging noise like the one that reminds you to put on your seatbelt. I had my seatbelt on, and couldn't figure out why this alert was coming on. Now that I've done more research, it seems that this is to notify that power steering is out. Power steering should not go out while you're driving at any period of time, but the fact that this is malfunctioning while driving on the interstate is terrifying and DEADLY! Luckily no one was injured in my case, but there have been deaths reported due to this problem. Please, please, please, if you have any information on how to handle this issue let me know. I have already filed a complaint with Pontiac and the NHTSA.

Well - my steering was acting up too and I had just received something from GM to say that there may be a problem but don't bring the vehicle in unless it is giving you problems. I would be driving along and all of a sudden the steering wheel get's "Heavy" feeling and I'm not sure if it will stop steering all together. So I took it in and was told that the steering column needs to be replaced. So they order the parts - takes over 1 week to come in and they do the work. The bill was $435.00 and GM did cover it. However I am still having the problem and the other day - 2 days after having it "fixed" I was driving down the highway and the steering wheel starting jerking around in my hand and the whole care was vibrating. I pulled over and got out to check my tires to see if I had a flat. I waited a few minutes - got back in and started to drive again and it was fine. The steering is still acting up and now after reading all this stuff here I am worried about driving it anywhere. I have a son in Special Olympics and we have to drive 60 km. each week on the highway to go swimming. Yikes - is this car safe to drive!! I called my dealer to tell him my problems and I am hoping that it acts up when I can drive it in there so that they can see what it's doing. This is crazy!!

Well, I didn't get this fixed until this week (December 1, 2010) which means I have dealt with the power steering locking on me for almost 2 years. This is mainly because I wasn't sure if it would be covered under warranty and if it wasn't I was afraid the dealership would haggle me to get it fixed there at an expensive rate. Anyway, I finally have enough money to pay for it myself incase it isn't covered so I took it to Potamkin GM in Manhattan and had it looked at and it is actually covered by my 5year/100,000 mile warranty which I am ecstatic about. I will get picking it up in a couple of days and I can't wait! But I must say, if you are having problems with this, get it looked at as soon as possible. It was really dangerous the way it locked on my on sharp turns at 30-40mph. Sometimes I would pull over and turn it on or off and it would help but other times it would be stuck. It would make it impossible to parallel park and in Brooklyn & Manhattan parking is bad enough as it is. Anyway, good luck guys!

Such as I see here from other G6 Owners. Same issues. You can be driving down the road doing 65mpr and the power steering stops working. This is definitely a safety issue. If you are not strong enough to handle the steering you can end up like so many of the Toyota drivers - DEAD! GM you need to stand up and take ownership of your errors and correct it before many innocent people are hurt or killed!

I have only had this vehicle for 1.5 years and only put 8000 miles on it. It seldom gets driven.

Stand up and fix it GM!

Thank you to all of you who wrote something on here. It helped me in the long run with speaking to my dealer. Turns out this is a problem that is finally being addressed by GM as my VIN Number was in a list of cars to have the Power Steering replaced. I have an appt with the dealer on Wednesday to see what all will have to be done. I will check back and let all of you know. But I too was having all of the same issues as mentioned in the previous complaints.

Hello all I've posted many things on this site about my 2006 Pontiac G6. I've only owned mine since Feb. of this year! I knock on wood no problem on any power steering issue with mine I feel for you all that are dealing with the issue and having GM got off there BAILED out asses to place a recall. The G5's and Chevy Cobalts have I'M SURE the same electrical power steering motor, theres recalls on those two models but nothing on the G6. However I have had the Steering Shaft replaced for the thud feeling noise in the steering and had my injectors cleaned to help the over cranking when the car starts, but apprently that is normal unless when it happens the starter does not stop overcranking once the engine is turned over.

I have reported numerious times to the NHTSA ( National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) about the steering issues for all G6 owners and just a few days ago I got a notice in the mail from Pontiac its not a recall notice which I thought it was and should be its a notice stating this. Some 2005-2006 Pontiac G6 models will experience a loss in power steering assist, to cut to the chase pontiac will cover the cost of repairs up to 10 years of owning the car or 100k whichever comes first. If you have had the problem fixed already submit your receipts to the address below. Hope this helps anyone! Fight tough all will get what we want the customer is always right!!!!

I am having the same issues with my g6. I got a recall letter in the mail 2 days ago. The say its some sort of wiring malfunction in the steering. You might want to contact gm if you dont get your letter. It says that 2.3 million cars a effected. Hope this info helps.

I am also having problems with the service air bag light comming on. This started at about 2,000 miles. I bruoght it to the dealership and they told me they couldnt duplicate the problem. I hope they have a recall on that soon. I am also having problems with my drivers side front outer tie rod. It needed to be changed at about 20,000 miles and now at 95,000 miles. and my catalytic converter was changed at 23,000 miles and now its out again.

I wish they would recall the whole damn vehicle.

Just pulled out of my driveway and was waiting to turn left when my steering wheel just clicked and I couldnt even turn. I started pulling out and could barely make it before almost going into a ditch... I managed to turn around and go back to my house and my boyfriend looked at it, took out the manual and it showed us where the power steering fluid was, only there was nothing there... Evidently its electric... He turned it back on and it worked fine, took it for a test drive and it was fine... This car is the worst car I have ever bought. I was 17 when I bought it, found it in the showroom at the dealer and fell in love with it... Of course we ended up paying almost 30,000 for it brand new and it has been nothing but problems.. There has always been a click in the steering column that I never really noticed, but even if I went to trade it in now, they wont even give me 4,000 for it.. ITS ONLY 4 YEARS OLD!!! Makes me sick how they ripped us off... I have had to get the rotors replaced 3 times, at least 5 sets of tires, ball joints, tire rods, and my air conditioner switch board thing... Now my Dad has it at the dealer trying to figure it out for me, I'm 8 months pregnant and not risking crashing into a tree because of faulty power steering!!!!! Thank God I was just pulling out of my road when it decided to act up.

so i pulled out of my parking space this morning on my way to work when... MY CAR STARTS DINGING AND ACROSS MY SCREEN SAYS POWER STEERING... i few months back i took it in to have looked at because it was making a popping feeling when i would go to turn... the person looked it over poked around and nothing... NOW THIS!! so did a little research and come to find out the cobalts and g5s are all being recalled for the same issue... and nothing for the G6... wtf.. and now im reading everyone elses complaints and notice its problem... when i call gm they says pay it out of pocket... how can driving down a road at any speed and having the power steering go out be safe.. and gm says they will put a report in to have it investigated... how can a g5 and a coblat basically the same as a g6 be recalled for the same issues im having and 100s of others and something not be done... NOT HAPPY!!!!!!!!! READING THE REPORTS SOUNDING LIKE ITS GOING TO BE OVER 800 TO FIX!!! yes i can pull that out of my tree in the back yard!!!

my stupid power steering thing kept coming over the radio FOREVER!!! after several oil changes and inquiries they would tell me they "topped off the power steering fluid" BS!! it doesnt even take power steering fluid! well I believed them for a while... most cars do and the light would stay off for several weeks or even months! ive had problems with this stupid power steering message for about a year now and everytime i decide to take it in it goes off and doesnt come back on for weeks! so the other day I was driving to work and the light came on, a few seconds later the power steering FAILED!! I could barely turn the car off the road into a parking lot. had I been on a curvy road or at a faster pace it could have been very bad!

thats it, Im trading that car in for something other than pontiac. cheaply made piece of crap!

Accident caused husband of over 20 years brain injury resulting in memory loss, anxiety and also played a roll in his death. My husband was an excellent driver had active cdl license no accidents, no speeding. What happened still remains a mystery but we had many problems with the G6, The last one was terrible he ended up running into a wall insurance company totaled car within days and car was picked up immediately by someone before I could even put a hold on it to be checked out by mechanic. This happened in April 2009 - will post picture soon. I just got out of car I believe the car stuck in park and he jerked it out into reverse when backing out of parking lot causing him to go up and over landscaping and rocks, then the car excellerated forward very fast and he ran straight into a brickwall. There were no skid marks and no brake lights came on. It was terrible to witness and do not wish this upon anyone THIS CAR HAS SERIOUS PROBLEMS! My husband was 48 at the time of the accident - he died October 9, 2009. We bought the car with less then 6,000 miles if our first service record was around 15,000 miles for making abnormal noise when on hwy & Slowing down then speeding back up. I will be posting multiple complaints on this site for every thing I can remember on this car and there were many problems. Would be happy to talk to anyone about the problems as even tho my husband is no longer living he is still being charged for wreckless driving and they want to charge him stating he was trying to leave the scene of accident unbelievable a man with no record - no accidents - not even a speeding ticket and taken to hospital by ambulance and admitted to hospital and treated for head injury. I will be showing up in court to clear my husbands name and reputation so any one having any information on any soon to be recalls - That are obviously way overdo would be appreciated my husband was my best friend and loved for 26 years.

This car is very unstable and dangerous. I purchased the car dec 06 with very low miles, my husband of 22 years was in accident april 2009, it looked as if he plowed into a block wall for no reason, I know I witnessed the accident I just got out of the car, he received brain injury leading to memory loss, he died Oct.9 2009 now who suffers?. I have service record that states the abnormal noise in car June of 07, Reads when on hwy & slowing down to 60mph & then speeding back up to 75 the car makes a abnormal noise. "Customer concern not duplicated, engine mechanical." You buy a car with warranty feeling safe something doesnt seem right take in and have them fix it. How many service invoices come back with customers concern not duplicated? After his accident l searched on internet did not find any problems, even contacted an attorney to see if he knew of any I was brushed off. Husband who had clean record no accidents, speeding or traffic or ever been in trouble with the law received a wreckless driving ticket. He never made it to court never remembered exactly what happened. Problems with this car will come and go. Son had minor accident one month after it was in shop July 2008 received ticket for not being able to control the situation. I will be posting all my problems individual however it will not bring my husband who was my best friend for 26 years back, or change the fact my insurance raised my rates unbelievably because of two accidents that now are showing because of faulty steering The most we hope for is a auto MFG do a recall in a timely manner is that not what we pay for when we buy a car with a warranty. my car was totaled was paid off by insurance to me what seemed very quick had a check before I was even able to try and put a hold on car to be checked by mechanic only to receive a letter from insurance co that they needed me to sign a Power of attorney to finalize title work. was shipped out of state who would have known about it that fast to purchase and ship out of state. Car MFG. I wonder? PEOPLE this problem was reported three years ago and still no recall - years later after lives, have been paid for. This car has some major problems from electrical problems from condensation I'll say my trunk filled with water after it rained hard one time. I guess i'm glad I live in the desert. My question is to all who still own one of these cars what injury will you receive, before the customer concern is duplicated, what ticket or accident will you be blamed for, how high will your insurance be raised to -

The f-ing power steering keeps going out. You have to shut the car off and restart it for it to work again. If it's hot out, forget it. It will just keep going out. This seems to be a common issue with the '06 models between 55,000 and 60,000 miles. GM needs to get off of their government bailed out asses and teke carer of their customers before they alienate even more of them. WTF?
