Grand Prix 3.8L V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 45,000 miles

Shortly after purchasing the car, a clunking sound appeared in the steering and could be felt in the steering wheel. I took the car into a GM dealer and they could not find a problem. After a few months of the problem worsening, I took the car into another GM dealer and described the problem and they knew immediately what it was. So, they replaced the intermediate shaft and the problem disappeared.

After having the intermediate shaft replaced by a GM dealer when the car was still under factory warranty, the problem reoccurred. I took the car back to the dealer because they warrantied their replacement parts for one year; it was a different service manager and he told me the problem was not the intermediate shaft but rather something else but he didn't have the diagnostic tools available to him. He said he'd call me when he got the tool but he never called and the one year warranty period on the original replacement expired. The problem is exactly the same as it was when I had the intermediate shaft replaced a few months prior but the service manager wouldn't listen to me. The popping noise continues to worsen. One of my employees has a Grand Prix, as does my daughter's boyfriend; their cars have the same problem. I was told by the GM dealer that there would be no recall unless it was a safety issue. Does not speak well of GM!!

Same play/hitch in the steering wheel response that I've had with other GM vehicles. Minor repair but how could a steering wheel get 'loose'...Maybe seemed more dangerous than it was. Quick repair and drives like new again.

Clunk felt through steering wheel. Complained to dealer while in for a oil change. Dealer replaced a intermediate steering shaft no further problems.

Update from Jul 7, 2014: Issue came back a few years later. Noise still there.
