In 2012 my car key was stuck in the ignition. The next day after 450.00+ the dealership replaced the ignition cylinder. A few months later both airbag lights came on & stayed on. The dealership told me since it was an issue with the airbag & safety there would not be a charge for the dianostic; when I arrived I was told that there would be a $75 charge. I left the dearship without the testing. A couple of months later the oil was changed & I asked for a test to check the airbag light. When finished the tech said they were unable to determine the issue with the airbag & I would need to take it to another dealership. We are a one car household so I had to wait until being without a car would have minimal impact. When I heard about the recall I waited & had the dealership due a test in case it was something affected by the ignition cylinder. Last week I took it to the servicing dealership & asked they check the airbag light. Later I received a call advising the airbag sensor had shorted out & a new sensor would cost 900.00+. I mentioned disabling the airbag & was told it is against federal law to do so. The service tech said in ks seat belts on cars purchased in ks are covered under warranty for 10 yrs & 3 yrs for airbags. I suggest that car co.'s consider a lifetime or life of car ownership warranty for both seat belts & airbags. Few have close to 1K to spend on repairing/replacing an airbag sensor & it doesn't make sense to have a law stating the airbag can't be disabled but its okay to knowingly put a car on the streets with a non/potential non-working airbag. The seatbelts & airbags work in tandam to protect shouldn't their warranties also be together? having seatbelts & airbags covered for the life of the car will show the public in light of recent recalls car companies will do what is needed to show consumers their & their passengers safety are a priority.

Repair was ignition lock replacement by dealer (approx $400). Based on comments at NHTSA and other sites, this is a very common problem for this vehicle type.

I am unable to turn off ignition, can "not" turn key to the off position to release key. Car is in the park gear and remaining running. After many calls for help I learned I could pull the fuse to turn car off but key still will not release. It appears that there are many Saturn owners with the same problem can you please help can not afford to fix car hoping this is part of a recall but have not been able to find that information yet.

The contact owns a 2006 Saturn Ion. The contact stated that while driving approximately 50 mph the front driver's side window dropped down into the door panel, causing the door to swing open. The vehicle was pulled over and shut off. After repeated attempts the door was shut, but would not reopen. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the contact was informed the window detached from its track. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but offered no assistance. The contact also stated that the vehicle was experiencing recurring failures in which the check engine light would constantly illuminate on the instrument panel and the key would intermittently become stuck in the ignition. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they were unable to diagnose the failure in regards to the check engine light. In regards to the key becoming stuck in the ignition, no repairs were performed. The failure and current mileages were 69,080. Updated 08/31/2011

First, my power steering would go out. I would turn of the car and turn it back on and it would be back for a short time. I took it in and it was fixed a week or two ago. Now, the ignition key is locked in the on position. To turn it off I have to disconnect fuse 16 and disconnect the negative power cable. To turn it on I have to reconnect the negative power cable and reinsert the fuse. I was advised this is a common problem with Saturn Ions and not related to the recent work that was done on the car.

To get the ignition key to release can take anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes by trying to engage and re-engage the shifting mechanism to park and sometimes by locking and unlocking the car doors.

We have a Saturn Ion 2006 which is now experiencing ignition issues. First the car would not stop running (hazard!) in my driveway. This was due to the key being stuck in the on position in the ignition! we had to allow it to run out of gas prior to finding the emergency key release that Saturn has noted. Now the car will not even start and when I called the customer service line, the response was hardly comforting. Looking online it appears that there are numerous complaints logging this issue. It appears that there are quite a few people that would like to pursue a class action lawsuit against Saturn/GM as there have been absolutely no investigations, recalls, or even an acknowledgement of said issue. This is the first time the ignition has caused us issues, but looking at the online complaints, it won't be the last.
