After noticing the steering "drift" when the car is steered just off center line, I became concerned like many other drivers I found online on this web site. After researching further, and after much thought on possible causes, I read the Subaru manual on "Eyesight Driver Assist Technology" provided with the car finding the cause and solution.

Just before reading this manual I noted the issue would only occur on roads with painted center lines, which is how the "Eyesight Assist Monitor" guides the car back to your lane. The "Lane Keep Assist" button on the right lower steering wheel control panel has to be pressed deactivating this system. I also deactivated the "Lane Departure Warning" that is found on the lower left side of the dash board although I don't know if this is a necessary step in eliminating the uncomfortable feeling of drift when the lane keep assist is tuned off. Obviously this entire system is a safety feature from Subaru and is meant to protect drivers from veering offline, but like many others I found the computerized assist unsettling after driving for so many years without such technology.

I suppose if my children had this system that I would be less likely to deactivate it. I hope this helps others and eliminates unnecessary visits to the dealer. Also now knowing that this is a safety feature response and not a defect with the vehicle is reassuring in case one decides to keep it operational. I even had called Subaru on their main help line and the representative was unable to provide any useful information on the cause (and did not think of the above noted cause and solution) and suggested I bring the car to the dealer.

The steering is a problem. It pulls and when you fix it, there is play in the wheel .You can not relax driving. I pray there is not a bad accident

I was looking forward to this new fleet provided car, but after I picked this brand new 2019 car up from the delivering dealer and driving it home about 30 miles I noticed the steering control was erratic, would pull me out of my lane and at times I could not feel the steering wheel control for a few seconds. It would swerve and there was a severe over-steer.

Not having had an all wheel drive car before I thought maybe it was particular to the drive wheel mechanism switching from wheel to wheel but it was scary and I felt I was going to loose control at any time (very unnerving and disconcerting) I've had the car two weeks now and after going on-line I see that there have been reported complaints so I am going to take to a local dealer and have the steering checked out. I have driven dozens of vehicles including 4 wheel drive but never have I driven such an erratic and unpredictable car!

Outback 2.5L

  • CVT transmission

The steering wheel can turn suddenly to the right, sometimes left and if you are not holding on with both hands it can steer itself off the road. Feels like old rack and pinion without power steering, but at 50 mph is scary. The lane assist warning is not part of the problem - lane warning light/sound occurs without steering problem and vice versa.
