2006 Highlander Hybrid Inverter went out, seems to be a common problem. Toyota is telling me that my VIN number is not part of a recall or warranty extension. Hoping for a miracle.

I was driving west on Sample Rd. in Pompano Beach Fl. Driving about 40 miles per hour when my dash lights went on and the car just stopped. Of course everyone behind me started to blow horns and yell. Like I did it on purpose. I was towed Deerfield Toyota and waiting to hear what went wrong with the car.

I went online when I got home and read lots have people have had the same problem. There has been a recall for this problem but when I call Toyota they said my vin.# was not included. I'm waiting to hear from the dealer today and the warranty dept. on Monday. This is very bad. The car behind me came within inches of hitting me.

I was traveling from Pocomoke City Md and the vehicle shut off and would not restart. Had to have towed to the Toyota dealer in Pocomoke Md. The 2006 Toyota Highlander Hybrid was diagnosed and the inverter had to be replaced. The cost was $8000.72 dollars out of pocket to have repaired. I had no choice but to have it fixed given I still owed $12000 on the vehicle. I was told by the Toyota dealer that the next thing could be the batteries to go and this would cost $4000 dollars to replace. I traded this vehicle for a Honda. I really had no choice other than to trade this vehicle. I am now $9500 dollars in the hole. I really think Toyota should pay me $8000. 72 dollars knowing this is an on going problem, but trying to hide. If anyone can give me some direction on how I can get all or part of my money back, please let me know.

Highlander Hybrid 4x4 V6

  • Automatic transmission
  • 115,000 miles

I was doing 65 mph on the turnpike in rush hour in the passing lane when my '06 HH began to decelerate and the dashboard lit up with VSC, check engine, hybrid, and ABS. Somehow I managed to coast into the shoulder, and feel lucky to be alive. It's been in the shop for a few weeks and we just heard back from Toyota that the Inverter failed. They said they filed it with Toyota HQ and are going to go to bat for us, but haven't heard anything back. We'll see. The Service manager wouldn't even quote us the repairs because they are so costly (more than the car is worth). It has 115,000 miles on it, so warranty has run out, but we are a CA emissions state, so not sure what that means in terms of extended warranty on hybrid parts. Still have 8 more lease payments to make and then the buyout of $13K. We heard the '06 have the Prius inverter, but they realized it couldn't carry the weight, so in '07 they switched them out. I called the NHTSA as suggested on forums.

This is a very dangerous issue and Toyota should do the responsible thing and address it. My 4x4 VIN is JTEEW21A860027863, so doesn't align with the VIN breaks listed in other forums. If you are having the same issue, please feel free to send me an email woodfamily20verizon.net
