Highlander Hybrid Limited 3.3L V6

  • CVT transmission
  • 47,000 miles

My Toyota Highlander Hybrid starts itself and will continue to run until found and shut off. It has push button start/stop. This has happened 11 times that I know of and neither the dealer or Toyota thinks it is real. If I had parked the car in the garage at night, I might well be dead now if it decided to start up and poison us with CO gas. I would like them to fix this problem and they blew me off. It happens when anything unusual occurs like a passenger open their door before the car is shut off or just occasionally at random. Many times you think the car is shut off, but it really isn't and the little glowing light on the button is blocked from the drivers line of sight by the steering wheel. This design is flawed and totally dangerous. I have a long description of the problem and possible causes and would be happy to talk at length with someone about it. The vehicle's firmware needs a fail-safe built into it to prevent the car from ever restarting by itself when unattended. This is not the case. I am completely frustrated trying to talk to Toyota or the dealer.
