  • 178,000 miles
The contact owns a 2011 Toyota Prius. The contact stated when his wife turned on the vehicle the brake, abs, and traction warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact stated while she was driving at 10 MPH, she noticed that the brake did not have pressure as usual. The vehicle was diagnosed at an AutoZone, and they stated that there was an abnormal ACC (C1391). The manufacturer was contacted, and they stated that the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was 178,000.

This issue started happening intermittently beginning in April 2022. The ABS/Traction Control/Emergency brake lights came on all at once and the car lost power braking ability. The car would stop, but it required much more force on the pedal and an increase braking distance. Folsom Lake Toyota Service said that there wasn't anything they could do if the warning lights had turned off and to try to recreate the issue. It happened again in May 2022 while my daughter was driving the car back from Tahoe. She was not hurt, she avoided an accident. The car returned to normal operation after it was parked for one day. It happened again in July of 2022. This time the brakes hissed when applied. Called Folsom Lake Toyota to have it looked at. They diagnosed it as error code C1391 and the master cylinder (acctuator) and brake booster needed to be replaced. The repair was $3200, so we took the car to Roseville Toyota for a second opinion. Roseville Toyota was able to recreate the issue and the brakes completely failed at their service center. Their estimate was for the same $3200 repair. We called Toyota Corporate and they responded that there was a Toyota Customer Support Bulletin ZJB sent out for this issue. The bulletin extended the factory warranty on the parts for 10 years or 150,000 miles. The bulletin describes the exact code and symptoms our car experienced. Our car is 11.5 years old and 113,000 miles. In speaking with Toyota Corporate, their position is that they already extended the factory warranty once and since that our car is past the 10 years, they refuse to consider my complaint or provide any "goodwill" assistance with the repairs. Toyota knows there is an issue with their master cylinder and brake booster parts. They set an arbitrary warranty extension date rather than recalling the cars. Toyota is waiting for the brakes to fail BEFORE they fix the problems. My daughter could have been seriously injured or killed, or she could have killed someone else.

Toyota extended this warranty to 10 years 150k mine 2011 so lost the repair last year but only has 150k miles.

My brake accumulator pump has begun running much more frequently than it should. Upon extensive online searching, I learned that this condition is warning sign of an eventual failure of the brake booster pump and/or master cylinder which will cause brake failure at an unpredictable time when the brakes are applied. I understand that this condition is known by Toyota and has been addressed by "warranty enhancement ZJB". However, my car is outside of the cutoff age/mileage. The president of Capistrano Toyota in Southern California made this problem known to you with an urgent letter dated 9/19/19 and expressed why this NEEDS to be a recall issue, not just what it is now. The reason is because not only has Toyota time limited repair coverage, they would not do the repair until failure occurred....a totally illogical and dangerous plan. I should not have to pay ~$3000 to have this well-known problem repaired at my own expense just because the invitable failure hasn't happened yet, and I'm not within Toyota's arbitrary time limits for having the repair covered at no cost. The symptoms I am experiencing are precisely those that are the precursor to this known failure. Why has NHTSA not acted to force this issue to be a full recall? You are putting lives at risk by not acting in a timely fashion given the Toyota dealer's warning I mentioned above.

While driving at roughly 58mph, while going around a turn: multiple dashboard lights came on, Tire pressure, traction control, emergency brake, one other. My brakes became less responsive (roughly half braking strength). This is consistent with the pseudo recall offered by Toyota covering my vehicle for a limited time, for which no notice was given and no warnings were sent.this issue has caused over five dozen crashes and during the duration of the recall, vehicles were not eligible until the braking system had failed. There were no signs of the faulty part until after the extended warranty period had expired, but the issue is the warrantied part, and the failure is consistent with the failure caused by the manufacturing defect responsible for the extended warranty effective in 2017

All brakes warning light went on while driving. The anti skil, abs, emergency brake lights. The car was unable to stop and code reader indicated a brake booster pump and brake actuator/accumulator failure. The failure was confirmed, and the brakes just stopped working while driving. I almost crashed into another car as the brake was not working no matter how many times I press it. Contact Toyota, they are careless and said it was not cover in any recalls and an enhancement warranty just passed 4 months on my car. A previous voluntary recalls was issue for the car model year before mine. This is a fundermental feature of a car and should be fix regardless of age. It is putting people's lives in danger and will cause accident!

Brake System Warning light ABS warning light Slip indicator light 6/3/2022, while driving on the highway the above warning lights illuminated. I depressed the brakes but failed to engage. I was able to slow down by shifting the gear into -€œB-€. Eventually the brakes engaged and I brought the car to a stop. Toyota created customer support program ZJB but the warranty covered a period until August 2021.

Hello, My vehicle a 2011 Toyota Prius V, Vin: XXXXXXXXXXX is showing the breaks, ABS and TRAC Warning lights and the breaks become less responsive. I was able to find out that TOYOTA had a recall for this issue that can be found here: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2019/MC-10158577-9999.pdf I email Toyota about the issue and this was their response: ===== BRAND ENGAGEMENT ADVOCATE, May 26, 2022 at 10:46 AM Dear Customer, Thank you for contacting Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. We are sorry to learn your 2011 Toyota Prius is experiencing concerns with the ABS and TRAC warning lights coming on. Toyota strives to produce long-lasting, trouble-free parts and while we cannot predict an average life expectancy for any specific part or component, we do provide our limited implied Toyota warranty which reflects our confidence in the products we offer. According to your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), XXXXXXXXXX, the warranty for the part you are inquiring is 3 years, or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first starting from the vehicle's in-service date: 03/20/2011. We verified this vehicle was involved in Customer Support Program ZJB which was covered for 10 years from the vehicle in-service date which expired 3/20/2021 or at 150,000 miles which ever occurred first. We have confirmed there are no related to your ABS or TRAC concern. While there are situations where we gladly look into out of warranty financial assistance requests, we are simply unable to offer any assistance due to the age and mileage of your vehicle. If we do initiate any type of Safety Recall Campaign (SSC) in the future, you will be notified directly via first class mail. Sincerely, XXXXXX Toyota Brand Engagement Center ===== My request is that I wasn't aware of the recall until the issue started happening a week ago (5/15/2022) and I would love to get my car for the service recall or Customer Support program if Toyota would Email me or call me or send me a letter about this issue. Please help

The brake system failed. Over time there was a frequent sound (which I now know is the brake pump) when you opened a door. Eventually at 120K the entire brake system failed throwing the ABS code. I had to replace the brake actuator and booster (2 parts are recommended in the repair) for a little more than $1500. After speaking with the parts rep at Toyota (I replaced it with geniune Toyota parts) I was under the impression that the parts person knew that people frequently buy these parts which led me to believe something was known but not divulged.

While driving on the freeway 3 warning lamps lit up: parking brake, traction control & the "!" (attention warning light). I was about to exit and while braking noticed my brakes were not working well. It required at least twice the muscle effort to stop and took a further distance. Prior to this the brakes seemed to have been working perfectly. I stopped at an Autozone on the way home and they scanned the C1391 error code. A quick internet search showed that this had been the subject of a recall for the year and model of the car: 2011 Toyota Prius. I have not yet taken it to the dealer but understand the recall no longer covers this year. However, the safety of myself and passengers was definitely at risk due to a known problem of this car.

Driving on a cross country trip and went over a bump to have all the brake lights on the dash illuminate and brake system failed. Brakes were very hard to push but was able to safely stop the vehicle. Brought it to Toyota dealership and was told that the master brake cylinder, hydraulic brake booster and pump assembly needed to be replaced and that the vehicle was not safe to drive. I was advised that the parts are on national backorder and they don-€™t know when they-€™ll get the parts. I did more research into this and this is a known issue that Toyota has refused to address outside of a limited program that is no longer active for this model year. Toyota is refusing to cover any of the costs. This is an incredibly dangerous safety issue and Toyota should be forced to recall and reimburse everyone who has had this issue regardless of model year or mileage. Toyota is currently facing a class action lawsuit for this issue as well.

All the brake lights, ABS, and VSC lights came on, lucky I was not on the road. Now my brakes are mushy and I'm driving without any safety. I learned of the Customer Support Program - ZJB, but it expired for my 2010 Prius w 85k miles on 8/31/2021. I called Toyota Cooperate Office, they could not care less. They told me it is expired, bye! They need to make this a recall as the it is a major KNOWN problem for many cars. Repairs will run $3500 plus. This is my 2nd Toyota I bought brand new, and my last if Toyota is not willing to help.

Traction control, ABS, and brakes come on all at once and brakes don-€™t work properly. This happened a few times on the freeway and thank god I didn-€™t get into a crash. Car doesn-€™t feel safe to drive. I took the car to a mechanic to check the codes and the code C1391 (abnormal leak in accumulator) came up. I see that this is a very common problem with Gen 3 Prius-€™. Toyota has not called these car even though the problem seems to happen to all Prius-€™s of that generation. This is very dangerous and I fear driving my car and that the brakes might completely fail potentially causing a crash at accelerated speeds.

Our Prius started showing brake issues in June 2021 that has us concerned about safety. The car lurches when the brakes are pressed, and the brake functions inconsistently. This seems to fall under the -€œbrake booster pump assembly with master cylinder-€ issue that many others have complained about. When we called Toyota, they said a letter was issued in April 2019, but when we took the car in for diagnostics in August 2019, the brake issue (diagnostic code) didn-€™t appear then. So they said they won-€™t fix the hazardous defect. Even more troublesome is the fact that this issue has caused crashes and injuries in the past, and Toyota hasn-€™t issued a recall. Please help consumers hold Toyota accountable for putting their customers in harm-€™s way.

My daughter was driving the vehicle on highway and all dashboard lights came on. Abs brake and traction. The brakes would not work. She had to decelerate and pull off and turn car off. Terrifying. Got it checked at Toyota. Told them about that and how car lunges forward when brakes hit on a bump or pothole. We had to pay 2500 to replace brake booster which had an -€œinternal error-€. Got car back and all lights came back on. I-€™m literally terrified to drive my car because of what may happen. Toyota refuses to recall and fix whatever this issue is.
