Jetta 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 149,129 miles

This problem started a couple of months ago and only has become progressively worse. When you start to speed up from being stopped, the revs would go really high without kicking into the next gear. It now will not shift into higher gears, very sluggish. Only fix is a complete transmission replacement, and after spending 3k on a new engine for this car there's no way I'm forking out the money on this lemon to fix this.

Jetta 2.5L 5 cyl

  • Automatic transmission
  • 65,000 miles

When I experienced problems with my transmission, I tried to replace the transmission fluid, but there was no way to do so. I took it to the dealer who told me they couldn't do anything about it. I didn't understand his explanation, so I continued to drive it with sporadic problems. In the meantime, II took it other repair shops who said they couldn't fix it. Finally, I took the car into the dealer when it still had only 65000 mileage, and they told me that it is impossible to replace the fluid (if it needs it) because VW makes the transmission unrepairable because they designed it to last for the lifetime of the car. The dealer does not have equipment that would enable them to open it and see what the problem is. Therefore, putting in a new transmission is the only solution, and will cost in excess of $5,000.00, I estimate.h I have now found a website that sells rebuilt transmissions for this year of car, but I believe that since VW provided no way for me to repair the transmission or maintain it, that this amounts to an implied warranty that it should never wear out, at least until it has much greater mileage than it presently has. How can I get VW to make good on their implied warranty?

Jetta TDI 1.9L L4 Sohc 8v Turbo Di

  • Automatic transmission
  • 100,000 miles

There are many others that have this issue and whether or not its related to the flywheel issues it is hard to say. But when the automatic transmission shifts down to neutral from any gear, or shifts out of gear because I'm slowing down and the clutch doesn't need to be engaged, a loud clap happens. Its sounds like metal on metal. After warm up it doesn't happen as harsh or as frequent but it still happens. My mechanic is not sure what it is but with his lack of confidence with VW's DSC transmission he suspects that it is an issue with that. But I certainly can't afford to fix it, especially not with all the other issues on this car.

Jetta

  • Automatic transmission
  • 99,000 miles

Noticed some jerking between first and second gear, got an oil change and a tune up. The car ran fine after that for maybe a week or so. I noticed the problem return and when I took it in to the dealership for a diagnostic they told me the gear ratio faults and the entire transmission would need to be replaced. For the low low price of $6115. Even a lower quote from a local shop was over $4000. Not worth repairing on a car valued at around $6000. Really disappointed! Both service centers told me (fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it) that there's nothing I could have done to prevent the problem, and that even if they had caught it early it wouldn't have mattered.

Jetta 2.5L

  • Automatic transmission
  • 99,500 miles

I starting noticing about 9 months ago that the automatic transmission would not smoothly engage between 2nd and 3rd gear. That is, it would rev up the RPMs significantly (around 5000 rpm) and then 'kick' into 3rd gear. It feels like you got rear ended it is that violent. Now, it happens with varying degrees of revving and kicking in between all gear shifts.

This problem starts to happen when the car is fully warmed up (190 degrees). It runs just fine until then (about 10 minutes).

The VW dealer was able to replicate the issue. The service manager said they would need to break apart the transmission to determine what was going on. He made it sound like the diagnostic alone was going to run about $1,000 dollars.

Well, for at least 10 minutes, it's still a fun car to drive.
